Chapter 82 - Chapter 82 – The One Who Made the Promise

Chapter 82 – The One Who Made the Promise

The sky above Crosshaven split open.

Not like a crack in glass.

Not like a portal.

It simply opened.

Beyond it was a place with no stars, no clouds, and no light.

A vast emptiness stretched across the other side.

Everyone in the plaza looked upward.

No one spoke.

Even the ancient beings had gone silent.

The First Thought's hands were trembling.

Kai noticed.

"You know what's coming."

The First Thought didn't answer.

"Kai..."

It finally looked at him.

"You shouldn't have remembered."

Kai frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the promise was never meant to be completed."

Evetyl stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

The First Thought looked at her.

"The First Promise was created to survive."

"Not to be fulfilled."

Evetyl's expression hardened.

"Then why did it happen now?"

The First Thought glanced toward the broken golden key in the Curator's hand.

"Because the Collector's Master interrupted the cycle."

The Curator looked down at the fragments of his key.

"So my refusal..."

"Changed the timeline."

The First Thought nodded.

"You stopped collecting timelines."

"You allowed the forgotten memories to return."

"You allowed Evetyl to remember."

"And you allowed Kai to remember."

The Curator slowly understood.

"I thought I was saving existence."

The First Thought closed its book.

"You were."

"But now..."

"...existence has to deal with what you saved."

A low sound came from above.

Everyone looked up.

Something was descending through the opening.

At first, it looked like a person.

Then the shape became clearer.

A woman.

She wore a long white coat.

Her hair was silver.

Her face was hidden by a veil of pale light.

She didn't fall.

She simply walked down through the empty sky as if invisible stairs were beneath her feet.

The mysterious traveler from the future immediately stepped backward.

Kai noticed.

"You know her."

The traveler didn't respond.

Evetyl looked at him.

"Who is she?"

His voice was barely audible.

"The person who made the First Promise."

The woman stopped above the plaza.

She looked down.

Her gaze immediately found Evetyl.

Then Kai.

For several seconds...

She said nothing.

Finally, she smiled.

Not cruelly.

Not happily.

Sadly.

"So..."

Her voice echoed across Crosshaven.

"You finally remembered."

Evetyl's hands tightened.

"Who are you?"

The woman slowly removed the veil from her face.

Evetyl froze.

Kai stopped breathing.

The face beneath the veil...

Was familiar.

Too familiar.

It was Evetyl.

Older.

Much older.

But unmistakably Evetyl.

The woman looked down at them.

"I suppose I should introduce myself."

She smiled faintly.

"My name is Evetyl Clarke."

Nobody moved.

Cr-Hook stared at the woman.

Then at the Evetyl standing beside Kai.

Then back at the woman.

"...There are two of you."

The First Anomaly sighed.

"That's what you chose to focus on?"

"What else am I supposed to focus on?"

Kai stepped forward.

"You..."

The older Evetyl looked at him.

Kai's expression changed.

He recognized her.

Not with his eyes.

With his memories.

He remembered standing beside her.

A ruined world.

A burning sky.

His hand covered in blood.

Her hand in his.

He remembered her crying.

He remembered promising to find her.

But there was something else.

Something he had never understood.

He had seen her disappear.

Not die.

Disappear.

As if reality itself had rejected her existence.

Kai whispered,

"You were there."

The older Evetyl nodded.

"I was."

"What happened?"

"I made a choice."

"What choice?"

She looked at the sky.

"The wrong one."

Evetyl stepped forward.

"You said I made the First Promise."

The older Evetyl looked at her.

"Yes."

"Then why don't I remember?"

"Because you asked me to erase it."

Evetyl's expression tightened.

"Why?"

The older Evetyl slowly descended until her feet touched the ground.

She stood only a few steps away from Evetyl.

Two versions of the same person.

One young.

One older.

The older Evetyl looked at her younger self with an expression filled with regret.

"Because you had already seen the ending."

Evetyl frowned.

"What ending?"

"Our ending."

The Curator stepped forward.

"Explain."

The older Evetyl looked at him.

"You are the Collector."

"Not anymore."

"I know."

The Curator's expression became serious.

"You knew I would stop."

"Yes."

"You knew about the King of Oblivion."

"Yes."

"You knew about the First Promise."

"Yes."

The Curator stared at her.

"Then you knew everything."

She shook her head.

"No."

The Curator frowned.

"Then what did you know?"

She looked at Evetyl.

"Only what she allowed me to remember."

The Curator fell silent.

Evetyl looked confused.

"Why would I erase your memories?"

"Because you didn't trust the future."

"Why?"

"Because you had already seen what happens when someone knows too much."

Evetyl looked toward the traveler.

The traveler lowered his head.

"You."

He slowly looked up.

"You were the one who told me to forget."

Evetyl's voice became cold.

The traveler nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were trying to change the future."

"Was I wrong?"

"No."

He paused.

"You were too successful."

Evetyl didn't understand.

The traveler continued.

"You changed so many events that the future began collapsing."

"The worlds were overlapping."

"People were meeting versions of themselves."

"Dead civilizations were returning."

"Entire timelines were appearing without causes."

"You were saving everyone."

Evetyl stared.

"That doesn't sound like a bad thing."

"It wasn't."

The traveler looked toward the sky.

"Until you saved something that was never supposed to survive."

The plaza became silent.

Kai asked,

"What?"

The traveler pointed upward.

"Her."

Everyone looked at the older Evetyl.

She remained silent.

Kai's expression changed.

"You're saying..."

"The older Evetyl wasn't supposed to exist."

The traveler nodded.

"She is the result of a future that should have ended."

The older Evetyl closed her eyes.

"I tried to save everyone."

Her voice was calm.

"I thought if I carried enough memories..."

"...I could prevent every tragedy."

She looked at the younger Evetyl.

"But I became what I feared."

"What?"

"An existence that refused to let anything end."

Evetyl slowly understood.

"You became the Last Memory."

The older Evetyl nodded.

"I remembered every world."

"Every person."

"Every death."

"And I couldn't accept losing any of them."

"So I tried to preserve everything."

The Curator's eyes widened.

"That's why..."

The older Evetyl looked at him.

"Yes."

"You learned from me."

The Curator's face became pale.

"I became the Collector because of you."

"Partly."

She looked down.

"You tried to do what I couldn't."

"Preserve existence without becoming attached."

The Curator whispered,

"And I failed."

"No."

The older Evetyl smiled.

"You finally succeeded."

A strange silence followed.

The Curator looked at the broken key.

For the first time, he didn't look ashamed of it.

He looked relieved.

Then...

The ground shook.

A massive wave of darkness crossed the sky.

The King of Oblivion had returned.

The older Evetyl immediately looked upward.

"We're out of time."

Evetyl looked at her.

"What does it want?"

"Not you."

"Then what?"

The older Evetyl looked at Kai.

"Him."

Kai froze.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you are the final piece."

The First Thought suddenly opened its book.

"No..."

The Eye floated toward it.

"What did you find?"

The First Thought's voice shook.

"Kai isn't just carrying Evetyl's memory."

Everyone turned.

"He's carrying the memory of the original promise."

Kai looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

The First Thought stared at him.

"It means the promise was never between Evetyl and the future."

"It was between Evetyl..."

"...and you."

Kai slowly looked at Evetyl.

She looked equally confused.

The older Evetyl stepped closer.

"That's why I needed him to remember."

Evetyl asked,

"Why?"

"Because the First Promise has two halves."

"The first half belongs to the person who makes it."

"The second belongs to the person who receives it."

Kai whispered,

"And if I remember?"

The older Evetyl's expression became serious.

"The promise becomes complete."

"What happens then?"

She looked toward the sky.

"The First World returns."

The entire plaza shook.

The black crack above Crosshaven widened.

A massive golden light appeared beyond it.

The First Thought looked terrified.

"The First World..."

"It cannot return."

The older Evetyl answered,

"It already has."

The Curator looked around.

"Where?"

The older Evetyl pointed toward the sky.

"Everywhere."

The clouds disappeared.

For a moment...

Everyone could see something beyond the sky.

A vast green world.

Mountains.

Rivers.

Ancient cities.

Millions of lights.

The original world was returning.

Kai stared in disbelief.

"What happens to Crosshaven?"

The older Evetyl didn't answer.

Evetyl stepped closer.

"What happens?"

The older Evetyl finally spoke.

"Crosshaven will disappear."

Noah's expression changed.

"What?"

"It was never meant to exist once the First World returned."

The Warden stepped forward.

"Then we stop it."

The older Evetyl shook her head.

"You can't."

The Warden's chains tightened.

"I have stopped things that could not be stopped."

"I know."

"Then do not tell me I cannot."

The older Evetyl looked at it sadly.

"Because Crosshaven isn't being destroyed."

She pointed toward the city.

"It is being remembered."

The city began changing.

Buildings flickered.

Streets changed shape.

People suddenly saw places that had never existed.

The plaza became a forest.

Then a city.

Then an ocean.

Then Crosshaven again.

The Eye whispered,

"Reality is choosing."

The First Thing looked at the shifting world.

"Choosing what?"

"Which history is real."

Kai looked toward Evetyl.

"Can we stop this?"

Evetyl looked at the older version of herself.

"Can we?"

The older Evetyl smiled.

"Yes."

"How?"

"You already know."

Evetyl frowned.

"No, I don't."

The older Evetyl stepped closer.

Then placed a hand against Evetyl's chest.

"You made the First Promise."

"You protected the First Memory."

"You found Kai again."

"Now..."

She smiled.

"...you have to make the choice you were too afraid to make the first time."

Evetyl's eyes widened.

"What choice?"

The older Evetyl whispered:

"Let the past die."

Evetyl froze.

The older Evetyl continued.

"If you try to preserve everything..."

"...the worlds will collapse."

"If you allow everything to end..."

"...the worlds will continue."

Kai stepped beside Evetyl.

"Then what are you asking her to do?"

The older Evetyl looked at him.

"Choose what deserves to be remembered."

Kai shook his head.

"That's not her decision."

The older Evetyl smiled.

"Exactly."

Evetyl looked at Kai.

He took her hand.

"I'll help you."

She looked at him.

"You don't even know what you're agreeing to."

Kai smiled.

"Neither do you."

Despite everything...

Evetyl laughed.

A small, tired laugh.

"You're impossible."

"I've been told."

The older Evetyl watched them.

For the first time...

She looked peaceful.

Then her body began glowing.

Evetyl immediately noticed.

"What's happening?"

"I'm going."

"Where?"

"Back to where I belong."

The older Evetyl looked toward the sky.

"I was never supposed to remain."

Evetyl reached for her.

"Wait."

The older Evetyl smiled.

"You'll remember me."

"Will I?"

"Not everything."

She touched Evetyl's forehead.

"But enough."

Light spread between them.

Evetyl's eyes closed.

One final memory entered her mind.

A younger Evetyl.

A young Kai.

Standing beneath the First World.

Both holding hands.

And Evetyl saying:

"No matter how many times the world ends..."

"I'll find you."

Kai answered:

"And no matter how many times you forget..."

"I'll remember."

The memory ended.

Evetyl opened her eyes.

The older Evetyl was gone.

Only the white flower remained.

Evetyl caught it.

Then the sky above Crosshaven exploded with light.

The First Thought screamed:

"The First World is here!"

The entire city vanished into white.

And when the light disappeared...

Crosshaven was gone.

Evetyl stood on a vast green hill.

Kai was beside her.

Noah, Cr-Hook, the Curator, the Warden, the Eye, the First Thing, the First Anomaly, the Forgotten One, and the others stood scattered across the unfamiliar landscape.

Everyone was alive.

But Crosshaven...

Was nowhere to be seen.

Kai looked around.

"Where are we?"

The Curator slowly raised his head.

His expression was one of disbelief.

"We're..."

He looked toward the distant horizon.

"...at the beginning."

Evetyl stared at the enormous mountains in the distance.

Then she noticed something.

A small white flower was growing at her feet.

She knelt.

Before she could touch it...

A voice came from behind them.

"You're late."

Everyone turned.

A young man stood on the hill.

He looked ordinary.

Brown hair.

Simple clothes.

A calm smile.

But Evetyl knew him.

Not from her memories.

Not from the First World.

From somewhere much deeper.

Kai stared at him.

His face went pale.

The young man smiled.

"Hello, Kai."

Then he looked at Evetyl.

"It's good to see you again."

Evetyl slowly stood.

"Who are you?"

The young man smiled.

"I'm the person who was here..."

"...before the First World existed."
