Chapter 94 – The Choice Between Two Beginnings
Kai couldn't move.
Neither could Evetyl.
The words spoken by the shadow remained inside their minds.
You created me to kill the thing behind the First Door.
But there was something worse.
Kai could only use that power by killing Evetyl.
For several seconds, the entire tower remained silent.
Then Kai slowly looked at his hands.
"No."
Evetyl heard the word.
She stepped closer.
"Kai."
"No."
His voice was shaking.
"I won't."
The black mark on his chest pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
The shadow watched him.
"You will."
Kai looked up.
"No."
"You were created for this."
"I don't care."
"You cannot escape your purpose."
Kai clenched his fists.
"I already did."
The shadow tilted its head.
"Did you?"
Kai looked at Evetyl.
"I chose my own life."
Evetyl's eyes filled with tears.
The shadow remained silent.
Then it laughed.
A quiet, almost human laugh.
"You sound exactly like her."
Kai frowned.
"Like who?"
"Aeterna."
Evetyl looked at the shadow.
"What do you know about me?"
"Everything."
The answer came immediately.
"Every thought."
"Every memory."
"Every mistake."
"I existed before your first breath."
"I watched you build the first world."
"I watched you destroy the old one."
"And I watched you create him."
The shadow pointed at Kai.
"You thought you were saving him."
Evetyl whispered,
"I was."
"No."
The shadow's voice became colder.
"You were saving yourself."
---
Evetyl stepped forward.
"Maybe I was."
Kai looked at her.
She continued.
"I was afraid."
"I was alone."
"I didn't know what else to do."
The shadow didn't respond.
"I made mistakes."
Evetyl looked directly at it.
"But I won't make the same mistake again."
The shadow smiled.
"Then kill him."
Evetyl froze.
Kai immediately stepped in front of her.
"No."
The shadow continued.
"Kill Kai."
"End the weapon."
"End the memory."
"End the cycle."
"And I will leave your worlds alone."
Kai shook his head.
"Don't listen."
Evetyl looked at him.
"But what if it's true?"
"What?"
"What if killing you really stops everything?"
Kai stared at her.
"Then we find another way."
"And if there isn't one?"
"There will be."
"You don't know that."
"No."
He smiled weakly.
"But I've known you long enough to know something."
"What?"
"You never stop looking."
Evetyl couldn't help smiling.
"That's true."
Kai reached for her hand.
The black mark on his chest immediately became brighter.
He pulled away.
"Ah."
Evetyl frowned.
"What happened?"
"It reacted to you."
The shadow spoke.
"Of course it did."
Kai looked toward it.
"Why?"
"Because she is the trigger."
"The key."
"The lock."
"And the reason you exist."
Kai's face hardened.
"I don't care."
The shadow stepped closer.
"You will."
---
A loud crack shook the tower.
The First Door began opening.
The enormous shadow stepped halfway through.
The temperature dropped.
Evetyl could no longer feel her fingers.
The First Mother shouted from below:
"Evetyl!"
She looked down.
Her mother was standing in the ruined entrance.
Aren and Elara were beside her.
Noah, Cr-Hook, the Curator, the First Thought, the Eye, and the Warden were all there.
The Curator was holding his book open.
He looked terrified.
"Evetyl!"
"What?"
"Don't let Kai use the mark!"
Kai looked at him.
"Why?"
The Curator turned a page.
"Because the weapon isn't what we thought."
The First Thought rushed forward.
"What did you find?"
The Curator showed him the page.
The First Thought's eyes widened.
"No."
"What?"
"It's not a weapon."
Kai stared.
"Then what is it?"
The First Thought slowly answered:
"It's a command."
The black mark flashed.
Kai dropped to one knee.
"Evetyl..."
She caught him.
"What command?"
The First Thought looked at them.
"Return."
Kai gasped.
"Return where?"
The First Thought pointed toward the First Door.
"To the thing that created you."
The shadow smiled.
"Exactly."
---
The Curator quickly turned another page.
"There must be something else."
The First Thought searched beside him.
"Every record ends here."
"No."
"Every timeline."
"Every version."
"Every possible outcome."
"They all end with Kai returning to the shadow."
Evetyl looked at Kai.
"All of them?"
The First Thought nodded.
"Except one."
Everyone became silent.
Kai asked,
"Which one?"
The First Thought looked at Evetyl.
"The timeline where Evetyl dies before Kai remembers."
Evetyl's face became pale.
"That's not an option."
"I know."
The Curator closed his book.
"Which means the records aren't telling us how to win."
"They're telling us what the enemy expects."
Kai stood.
"So we're going against every recorded possibility."
Cr-Hook smiled.
"Finally."
Noah looked at him.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Because I was getting tired of losing."
---
The shadow suddenly raised one hand.
The tower exploded outward.
A wave of darkness swept across the city.
Buildings disappeared.
Bridges broke apart.
The sky turned black.
The Warden threw its chains around the group.
"Hold on!"
The chains tightened.
Evetyl felt herself being pulled backward.
"Kai!"
He grabbed her hand.
Their fingers almost slipped.
"I've got you!"
"No!"
The shadow's voice echoed.
"She belongs to me."
Kai pulled harder.
"She's not yours!"
The black mark burned.
Kai screamed.
Evetyl grabbed his arm.
"Stop!"
The mark spread across his neck.
His eyes turned black.
"Evetyl..."
His voice was no longer steady.
"Let go."
"No."
"Please."
"No!"
"You have to."
"I won't."
The shadow spoke again.
"Kill her."
Kai's hand moved.
Evetyl saw the black energy gathering around his fingers.
"Kai."
He was shaking.
"I can't stop it."
Evetyl stepped closer.
"You can."
"I don't know how."
"Look at me."
He did.
"You're Kai."
His breathing became uneven.
"You're not a weapon."
The black energy flickered.
"You're not a memory."
The mark weakened.
"You're not a command."
The darkness around his hand began disappearing.
"You're my friend."
Kai's eyes returned to normal.
The shadow became silent.
Evetyl smiled through her tears.
"And you promised."
Kai stared.
"Promised what?"
"That you wouldn't leave."
He smiled.
"I remember."
---
The shadow suddenly screamed.
The sound shattered the remaining windows.
"You cannot change what you are!"
Kai shouted back:
"I already did!"
The black mark disappeared from his chest.
For the first time, the shadow looked surprised.
The First Thought stared.
"That shouldn't be possible."
The Curator whispered,
"He's breaking the command."
"No."
The First Thought shook its head.
"He's doing something else."
"What?"
"He's rewriting himself."
---
Kai stood straight.
The darkness around him was gone.
But something remained.
A small silver light appeared over his heart.
The light slowly formed a symbol.
Evetyl recognized it.
It was the symbol from the children's drawing.
Three figures.
One memory.
One body.
One creator.
The First Mother stared at it.
"I've never seen that before."
The Curator looked at the symbol.
"Neither have I."
The First Thought stepped closer.
"It isn't from the old world."
"Then where?"
The First Thought looked at Kai.
"He created it."
Kai frowned.
"I did?"
"Yes."
"But I don't know how."
The First Thought smiled.
"That's the point."
---
The shadow stepped backward.
For the first time, it looked afraid.
Evetyl noticed.
"You are afraid."
The shadow said nothing.
Kai looked at it.
"Why?"
The shadow's voice became quieter.
"Because you were never supposed to become yourself."
Kai smiled.
"Too late."
The silver symbol grew brighter.
A wave of energy spread through the tower.
The First Door began closing.
The shadow grabbed the edges.
"No."
Kai stepped forward.
"You're going back."
"No."
"You wanted me to return."
"Yes."
"Then let me return."
The shadow stared.
"What?"
Kai raised his hand.
"But not as your weapon."
The silver light expanded.
"I'll return as myself."
The shadow screamed.
The First Door began closing faster.
Evetyl felt something pulling at her.
She reached for Kai.
He turned toward her.
"Evetyl!"
"What?"
"Go!"
"No!"
"You have to leave!"
"I'm not leaving you!"
"You have to!"
The First Mother shouted:
"Evetyl!"
The Warden's chains wrapped around her.
"No!"
Evetyl fought against them.
"Kai!"
Kai smiled.
"I'll come back."
"You promised."
"I know."
The First Door was almost closed.
The shadow reached toward Kai.
Kai looked at it.
"You're not my creator."
The shadow froze.
"You may have existed before me."
"But you don't own me."
The silver light exploded.
The shadow disappeared behind the door.
Kai was pulled inside.
"KAI!"
Evetyl screamed.
The First Door slammed shut.
The tower became silent.
The chains released Evetyl.
She fell to the floor.
"No..."
She crawled toward the place where Kai had disappeared.
"No."
The First Mother approached.
"Evetyl..."
"He's gone."
"No."
Evetyl looked up.
"What?"
The First Mother pointed toward the floor.
A small silver object was lying there.
Kai's pendant.
Evetyl picked it up.
It was warm.
Still warm.
She held it against her chest.
"He said he'd come back."
The First Mother nodded.
"Then believe him."
---
Hours passed.
The destruction of the tower had stopped.
Crosshaven remained damaged.
But it was alive.
People were beginning to return.
The timelines had stopped moving backward.
The First World had gone silent.
For the first time in days, the sky was normal.
Evetyl sat on the steps outside the tower.
She was holding Kai's pendant.
Aren sat beside her.
"You should rest."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I sleep..."
She looked down.
"...I might dream that he came back."
Aren was quiet.
Elara sat on Evetyl's other side.
"He will."
Evetyl looked at her.
"You sound very certain."
"I'm not."
Elara smiled.
"But Kai is stubborn."
Evetyl laughed quietly.
"Very."
Cr-Hook walked over.
"Good."
Evetyl looked at him.
"What?"
"You're laughing."
"I suppose."
He sat down.
"For the record, I hate emotional conversations."
Aren smiled.
"Then why did you come?"
"I have terrible judgment."
Noah walked over.
"That's true."
Cr-Hook looked offended.
"You're supposed to support me."
"I am."
Noah smiled.
"By telling the truth."
For a moment, everyone laughed.
It wasn't much.
But it was enough.
---
Later that night, Evetyl returned to the tower.
Everyone else was asleep.
She walked through the ruined hall.
The Curator was sitting alone.
His book was open.
"You knew I would come."
He nodded.
"I did."
"What did you find?"
"Nothing."
Evetyl frowned.
"Nothing?"
The Curator turned the book toward her.
Every page was blank.
"The records are gone."
"All of them?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
The Curator looked toward the First Door.
"Because the future changed."
Evetyl stared.
"Then we won?"
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"We changed one thing."
"What?"
"Kai."
Evetyl's heart tightened.
"What about him?"
The Curator pointed to the final page.
A single sentence slowly appeared.
KAI HAS LEFT THE TIMELINE.
Evetyl stared.
"Left?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Can you find him?"
The Curator shook his head.
"For the first time..."
He looked genuinely afraid.
"...Kai does not exist in any record."
Evetyl's hand tightened around the pendant.
"Then I'll find him myself."
The Curator looked at her.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
He turned the page.
A new sentence appeared.
Evetyl read it.
HER SEARCH WILL OPEN THE SECOND DOOR.
She stared.
"Second Door?"
The Curator nodded.
"I didn't know there was one."
"Neither did I."
A cold wind passed through the tower.
The First Door remained closed.
But somewhere deeper inside the ruined building...
A second door appeared.
It was smaller.
Older.
Covered in silver markings.
And from behind it came a sound.
Three knocks.
Evetyl slowly stood.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The Curator whispered:
"Don't open it."
Evetyl looked at the door.
Then she heard a familiar voice from the other side.
"Evetyl?"
Her heart stopped.
It was Kai.
But his voice sounded distant.
Very distant.
"Evetyl..."
She stepped closer.
"Kai?"
The voice answered.
"Please..."
A pause.
"Don't let me out."
Evetyl froze.
The Curator stood behind her.
"What does that mean?"
The voice came again.
This time it was terrified.
"Because something came back with me."
The second door began opening.
A thin silver light appeared through the gap.
Then another voice spoke from behind Kai.
A voice Evetyl had heard before.
The voice of the shadow.
But this time...
it wasn't speaking to Evetyl.
It was speaking to Kai.
"Tell her."
Kai whispered:
"Tell her what?"
The shadow answered:
"That I'm not the one trapped in here."
The door opened another inch.
"I'm the one holding him."
Evetyl's blood ran cold.
The shadow laughed softly.
"And he's not the prisoner."
The door opened.
"He is the door."
To Be Continued...
