Chapter 95 – The Door That Was Never Meant to Open
"He is the door."
The words remained in the air.
Evetyl couldn't move.
The second door stood half open.
A thin silver light escaped through the gap and spread across the ruined floor.
Behind that light...
Kai was standing.
Or at least, something that looked like Kai.
His face was pale.
His clothes were torn.
His eyes were normal.
But his expression was terrified.
"Evetyl..."
His voice trembled.
"Don't come closer."
Evetyl ignored him.
She stepped forward.
The Curator immediately grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
"That's Kai."
"We don't know that."
"I know his voice."
"So does whatever is behind that door."
Evetyl looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
The Curator's expression was serious.
"The thing behind the First Door can imitate memories."
"But Kai isn't a memory anymore."
"I know."
"Then what is he?"
The Curator looked at the second door.
"That's what we need to find out."
Another voice came from inside.
"Evetyl..."
Kai sounded weaker.
"Please."
She pulled her arm free.
"I can't leave him."
The Curator sighed.
"I knew you would say that."
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small golden thread.
He tied one end around Evetyl's wrist.
"What's this?"
"A return thread."
"Will it work?"
"I don't know."
Evetyl stared at him.
"You're becoming very comfortable saying that."
The Curator smiled faintly.
"I've had a difficult few days."
Evetyl almost smiled.
Almost.
Then she stepped through the door.
The Curator followed.
The moment they crossed the threshold...
The world disappeared.
---
There was no floor.
No ceiling.
No walls.
Only darkness.
Evetyl felt the Curator's hand still holding the golden thread.
Then she heard footsteps.
Kai was walking toward them.
"Evetyl."
She looked up.
He was standing only a few meters away.
She immediately ran toward him.
But before she could reach him...
Kai stepped backward.
"Don't."
She stopped.
"Why?"
Kai looked at the Curator.
"Because he can't come."
The Curator frowned.
"Who?"
Kai pointed behind Evetyl.
"The thing holding the door."
Evetyl slowly turned.
There was nothing there.
Then she heard breathing.
Not one person.
Thousands.
She looked back at Kai.
"What is happening?"
Kai shook his head.
"I don't know."
"You said something came back with you."
"I did."
"What?"
Kai looked at the darkness around them.
"It followed me."
"Who?"
He swallowed.
"The shadow."
The Curator's face became pale.
"Impossible."
Kai looked at him.
"I thought so too."
"What happened?"
"I opened the door."
"You weren't supposed to."
"I know."
Kai looked at Evetyl.
"I saw the place behind it."
"What did you see?"
"Everything."
The Curator stepped forward.
"Everything?"
Kai nodded.
"Every world."
"Every timeline."
"Every version of us."
"Every possible future."
"And every possible ending."
Evetyl stared.
"Did you see us?"
Kai looked at her.
"Yes."
"Did we survive?"
He hesitated.
"Some versions did."
"And the others?"
"They died."
"How?"
Kai looked away.
"Most of them died because of me."
Evetyl shook her head.
"No."
"I watched them."
"Kai..."
"I watched myself kill you."
Evetyl froze.
The Curator looked down.
Kai continued.
"Not once."
"Not ten times."
"Thousands."
"Every time, I became the thing behind the door."
Evetyl slowly stepped closer.
"But you're here."
Kai nodded.
"That's why I'm scared."
---
A distant sound echoed through the darkness.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The Curator turned.
"The door."
Evetyl looked behind them.
There was no door.
"Where?"
The Curator pointed into the darkness.
A silver outline appeared.
Then a second.
Then a third.
Suddenly, hundreds of doors appeared around them.
Some were wooden.
Some were made of stone.
Some were metal.
Some were completely transparent.
Every door showed a different world.
Evetyl saw Crosshaven.
Another door showed the Garden.
Another showed the First World.
Another showed a city she didn't recognize.
Another showed Kai standing alone.
Another showed Evetyl crying.
Another showed both of them smiling.
Another showed them fighting.
Another showed them as children.
Another showed them as strangers.
The Curator whispered,
"The possibilities."
Kai shook his head.
"No."
"What?"
"Not possibilities."
He looked at the doors.
"Memories."
Evetyl stared.
"All of them?"
"Yes."
Kai pointed toward one.
"That was the first time we met."
He pointed toward another.
"That's the time we fought."
Another.
"That's when you disappeared."
Another.
"That's when I found you."
Another.
"That's when we never met."
Evetyl felt dizzy.
"How can all of those be memories?"
Kai looked at her.
"Because the world remembers every possibility."
The Curator slowly understood.
"The First World..."
Kai nodded.
"Wasn't created to create reality."
"It was created to store it."
Evetyl looked around.
"Then what is this place?"
Kai answered:
"The Archive."
The Curator's eyes widened.
"The place before the Curator."
Kai looked at him.
"Yes."
The Curator went silent.
Evetyl looked at him.
"You knew about this?"
"No."
"Then why are you afraid?"
The Curator looked at the countless doors.
"Because if this is the Archive..."
He swallowed.
"...then I was never the first person to collect timelines."
---
A door opened by itself.
A young version of the Curator stepped through.
Evetyl stared.
He looked much younger.
He didn't have his book.
He didn't have the golden key.
He was simply a young man carrying a small box.
The younger Curator looked at the older one.
The older Curator froze.
"You."
The younger version smiled.
"You finally became me."
The older Curator took a step backward.
"No."
Evetyl looked between them.
"What is happening?"
The younger Curator looked at her.
"I was the first Curator."
The older Curator shook his head.
"No."
"I was."
"You disappeared."
"I was erased."
"By whom?"
The younger Curator pointed toward Kai.
"By him."
Kai stared.
"Me?"
The younger Curator nodded.
"Not intentionally."
"What did I do?"
"You asked me to forget."
Kai looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because you knew what I was going to become."
The older Curator closed his eyes.
"I remember."
Evetyl looked at him.
"You remember?"
He nodded.
"You came to me."
"Who?"
"You."
He pointed at Evetyl.
"You came to me before the First World existed."
"You asked me to preserve something."
"What?"
"Your memories."
Evetyl's expression changed.
"Why?"
"Because you knew someone would erase you."
She looked at Kai.
The Curator continued.
"And you were right."
---
The younger Curator opened the small box.
Inside was a single white flower.
Evetyl recognized it immediately.
Her flower.
She reached for it.
The moment she touched it...
Another memory appeared.
She was standing in the Garden.
Kai was beside her.
The first Kai.
Not the one beside her now.
He was holding her hand.
"You need to leave."
"I don't want to."
"You have to."
"Why?"
"Because they're coming."
"Who?"
Kai looked toward the horizon.
"The ones who existed before us."
Evetyl shook her head.
"I can fight them."
"No."
"I can."
"You can't."
"Then help me."
Kai smiled sadly.
"I already did."
He placed the white flower in her hand.
"What is this?"
"A memory."
"Of what?"
"Us."
Evetyl held it tightly.
"Why are you giving it to me?"
"Because you're going to forget."
She stared at him.
"No."
"You will."
"No."
"You'll forget the Garden."
"No."
"You'll forget me."
She shook her head.
"I won't."
Kai smiled.
"Then remember this."
He touched her forehead.
"If you ever find the flower again..."
A tear ran down his cheek.
"...you'll know that I was real."
The memory vanished.
Evetyl opened her eyes.
She was crying.
Kai was beside her.
The current Kai.
He looked at the flower in her hand.
"I remember that."
Evetyl stared at him.
"You do?"
He nodded.
"I don't know how."
The Curator whispered,
"Because the memory was never erased."
Evetyl looked at him.
"Then where was it?"
The Curator pointed toward the flower.
"Inside him."
---
The darkness suddenly shook.
Every door closed at once.
The Curator looked around.
"Something is wrong."
Kai looked toward the distance.
"It's coming."
"What?"
Kai didn't answer.
A deep sound moved through the Archive.
Like something enormous breathing.
The silver doors began bending.
The darkness between them started turning black.
Evetyl grabbed Kai's hand.
"Is it the shadow?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Kai looked terrified.
"The thing behind the shadow."
The Curator's face became pale.
"There is something behind it?"
Kai nodded.
"I saw it."
"What was it?"
Kai hesitated.
"I couldn't see its body."
"Then how do you know it exists?"
"Because it was looking through the shadow."
Evetyl felt a chill.
"At you?"
"No."
Kai looked at her.
"At you."
---
The darkness split.
A massive eye appeared.
Not the Eye.
Something far older.
The Eye itself suddenly appeared beside Evetyl.
For once, it wasn't calm.
Its surface was shaking.
"I..."
It struggled to speak.
"I cannot observe this."
The Curator stared.
"The Eye?"
The Eye looked toward the enormous presence.
"I have observed the beginning."
"I have observed the end."
"I have observed the space between."
"But this..."
It moved backward.
"...is outside observation."
The Warden appeared next.
Its chains immediately wrapped around Evetyl.
"What are you doing?"
"Protecting."
"From what?"
The Warden looked at the eye.
"From being seen."
Evetyl frowned.
"Being seen?"
The Warden nodded.
"If it sees you..."
"What?"
"It learns you."
Kai looked at the darkness.
"That's what it did to me."
The shadow spoke.
"No."
Everyone froze.
The voice wasn't coming from the enormous eye.
It was coming from Kai.
His mouth moved.
But his voice wasn't his.
"It didn't learn him."
The voice smiled through Kai.
"It remembered him."
Evetyl stepped backward.
"Kai?"
His body remained still.
The voice continued.
"He was never created."
Evetyl shook her head.
"Stop."
"He was remembered."
"No."
"He existed before the first world."
"No."
"You found him."
Evetyl looked at Kai.
"What is it talking about?"
The voice answered:
"You didn't create Kai."
"You found him."
"He was waiting."
"For you."
The darkness began moving.
The enormous eye closed.
Then opened again.
And suddenly Evetyl remembered.
A place before the Garden.
A place before the First Mother.
A place before the First World.
There had been a boy there.
A boy sitting alone in the darkness.
Waiting.
She had found him.
She had reached out.
And she had said:
"Come with me."
Evetyl gasped.
"I remember."
Kai's eyes returned to normal.
"What?"
"You."
"I found you."
Kai stared.
"Where?"
"Before the Garden."
His expression changed.
"I wasn't created."
"No."
"I was already there."
Evetyl nodded.
The Curator whispered:
"Then who created you?"
Evetyl looked toward the enormous eye.
"I don't know."
A voice answered.
"I did."
Everything stopped.
The eye opened completely.
The darkness disappeared.
A figure stepped out.
Not the shadow.
Not the first Kai.
Not Aeterna.
Not the First Mother.
Something else.
Something that had been waiting outside every timeline.
It looked almost human.
It had no crown.
No weapon.
No glowing aura.
Just a simple gray coat.
Evetyl recognized it immediately.
Her blood ran cold.
"You..."
Kai stared.
"The hooded woman."
The figure lowered its hood.
It was the mysterious woman from the future.
The one who had spoken to Kai before.
The one who had said they would meet for the first time.
But this time...
She wasn't smiling.
She looked at Evetyl.
Then at Kai.
And whispered:
"We made a mistake."
Evetyl stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at her.
"My name doesn't matter."
"It does to me."
"Then call me what I was called before I became human."
"What?"
The woman hesitated.
Then said:
"The First Thought."
The First Thought, standing behind them, froze.
"No."
The woman looked toward it.
"Yes."
The First Thought stepped backward.
"But I'm the First Thought."
"You are."
"Then who are you?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"The thought before thought."
The Curator whispered:
"The original."
The woman nodded.
"I created the First Thought."
The First Thought's book fell from its hands.
"You..."
"I created the Eye."
The Eye trembled.
"I created the Warden."
The Warden's chains tightened.
"I created the first Archive."
The Curator stared.
"And I created the first Kai."
Kai looked at her.
"Why?"
The woman walked toward him.
"Because I needed someone who could survive the end."
Evetyl stepped between them.
"Why did you use him?"
The woman looked at her.
"I didn't."
She pointed at Evetyl.
"You did."
Evetyl froze.
"You?"
"You found him."
"You brought him out of the darkness."
"You gave him a name."
"You gave him memories."
"And then..."
Her expression became sad.
"...you gave him yourself."
Evetyl couldn't speak.
The woman continued:
"That is why the shadow wants him."
"That is why the First World needs him."
"And that is why the second door opened."
Kai asked,
"Then what am I?"
The woman looked directly into his eyes.
"You are the bridge."
"Between what?"
She answered:
"Between the world that ended..."
She looked toward Evetyl.
"...and the world that never began."
The Archive shook violently.
Every door opened at once.
Millions of worlds appeared.
Millions of Evetyls.
Millions of Kais.
Millions of endings.
The woman turned toward the largest door.
"We don't have much time."
Evetyl stepped forward.
"Time for what?"
The woman looked back.
"To decide which world gets to exist."
Evetyl's heart sank.
"What happens to the others?"
The woman didn't answer.
Kai understood.
"They disappear."
"Yes."
Evetyl shook her head.
"No."
The woman looked at her.
"You can't save everything."
Evetyl stared at the countless worlds.
Then at Kai.
Then at the woman.
"You keep saying that."
She tightened her grip on Kai's hand.
"But everyone who told me that was wrong."
The woman smiled faintly.
"Then prove it."
Suddenly, the largest door began opening.
Behind it was not another world.
It was the Garden.
But the Garden was burning.
And standing in the center...
was Evetyl.
Not the Evetyl beside Kai.
Not the older Evetyl.
The original Aeterna.
She was holding the First Key.
And standing behind her was the shadow.
Aeterna looked directly through the door.
Directly at the present Evetyl.
Then she spoke.
"I know how to save everyone."
Evetyl stared.
"How?"
Aeterna raised the First Key.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Don't create the First World."
The woman became silent.
The Curator froze.
The First Thought stared.
Kai whispered:
"Then what happens?"
Aeterna smiled sadly.
"We let the old world live."
Evetyl's heart stopped.
The woman stepped backward.
"That's impossible."
Aeterna looked toward Kai.
"No."
"It's only impossible..."
"...because we already chose."
The First Key began glowing.
The entire Archive began collapsing.
And Evetyl suddenly understood the true meaning of the Second Door.
It wasn't a door to another place.
It was a door to another choice.
A choice that could erase everything they had ever known.
Including Crosshaven.
Including the First World.
Including Kai.
And perhaps...
including Evetyl herself.
Aeterna raised the key.
"Choose."
The Archive fell silent.
"Your world..."
She looked at Evetyl.
"...or the world that existed before you."
Evetyl looked at Kai.
Kai looked back.
Neither spoke.
Then the door began closing.
And from behind it...
someone whispered Kai's name.
Not Evetyl.
Not the shadow.
Not the woman.
It was a voice they had never heard before.
A child's voice.
"Kai..."
Kai suddenly went pale.
Evetyl grabbed his hand.
"What's wrong?"
He stared at the closing door.
"I know that voice."
"Who is it?"
Kai's eyes filled with fear.
"The person who taught me how to become human."
The door closed another inch.
Kai whispered:
"And she died before I was born."
The door slammed shut.
To Be Continued...
