Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Fox Beneath the Soul

The moment I calmed my breathing, I felt it.

An ocean.

Vast. Ancient. Endless.

It wasn't chakra in the normal sense—not yet, not fully awakened in this fragile body—but it was there, sleeping beneath everything.

Waiting.

Kurama.

Even sealed, even dormant within a newborn vessel, his presence was overwhelming.

"…Good."

I let my awareness sink inward.

Deeper.

Past the limitations of flesh.

Past the weakness of infancy.

Straight into the core of my existence.

The world vanished.

Sound disappeared.

Light bent and dissolved.

And when I opened my eyes—

I stood within a boundless expanse of red and gold.

The air itself shimmered, thick with chakra so dense it felt almost liquid. Every breath I took burned slightly, like inhaling raw power.

Before me stood a massive gate.

Towering.

Ancient.

Covered in faint, glowing seals.

And behind it—

Darkness shifted.

Then—

Two enormous eyes snapped open.

Burning.

Endless.

Dominant.

"So… you're finally awake, brat."

The voice rolled through the space like thunder, shaking the very ground beneath my feet.

I didn't move.

Didn't hesitate.

I simply looked up.

And there he was.

Kurama.

The Nine-Tailed Fox.

Each tail swayed slowly behind him, stirring the chakra-filled air into violent currents. His presence alone could crush mountains.

And yet—

I smiled.

"…Kurama."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You know my name already? Hmph. You must have inherited that from your past lives."

"Something like that," I replied calmly, stepping forward without fear. "You could say we've met before. Or rather… the one I was has."

There was a brief pause.

Then I added—

"I am Indra Ōtsutsuki… reborn."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

Kurama's expression shifted.

Not hostility.

Not anger.

Recognition.

"…Indra."

The name left his mouth slowly.

Measured.

"The Sage's eldest son."

His gaze sharpened, studying me more closely now.

"…That explains it. Your presence. Your soul. It feels… familiar."

I nodded slightly.

"He was my father. In another life. And you—"

My eyes met his fully.

"—were created by him."

A low rumble escaped Kurama.

Not a growl.

Something deeper.

"…So that's how you see it."

I took another step forward.

"No."

I stopped just before the gate.

"That's simply the truth."

For a moment—

Nothing moved.

The chakra in the air stilled.

Even the space itself seemed to wait.

Then Kurama chuckled.

Low.

Deep.

Amused.

"Hah… family, huh?"

His tails shifted lazily.

"That's a new one. Most humans just try to bind me. Use me. Fear me."

"I'm not most humans."

My answer came instantly.

"I don't want to control you."

I looked straight into his eyes.

"I want to understand you."

That—

Changed something.

I felt it immediately.

The tension in the space loosened.

The hostility… faded.

Kurama's gaze softened, just slightly.

Not weak.

Never that.

But no longer guarded.

"…You're different," he muttered.

Then—

Something impossible happened.

The gate behind which he stood—

Flickered.

Cracked.

And began to dissolve.

Golden light replaced iron.

Seals unraveled like threads being undone.

Kurama's eyes widened.

"…You broke the seal?"

There was genuine surprise in his voice now.

I tilted my head slightly.

"It seems I was given… special privileges."

A faint smirk touched my lips.

"The one who sent me here said I'd be the perfect jinchūriki."

The last of the gate vanished.

Completely.

No chains.

No cage.

No restrictions.

Kurama was free—

Within me.

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then—

He laughed.

Not mocking.

Not cruel.

Real.

"You've got guts, kid."

His massive head lowered slightly, bringing him closer to my level.

"Most humans would've collapsed just standing here."

I walked forward until I stood directly before him.

Close enough to feel the heat of his breath.

Close enough to feel the sheer scale of his existence.

"We don't need to be enemies, Kurama."

My voice remained calm.

Steady.

"You're not a weapon."

A pause.

"You're a being created by the Sage of Six Paths. A part of something greater."

His eyes searched mine.

Testing.

Weighing.

Then—

Slowly—

The hostility disappeared completely.

"…You remind me of him."

His voice was quieter now.

"And a little of Indra."

A faint smile crossed my face.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

Then I felt it.

His chakra.

It surged—not violently, not destructively—but warmly.

Like fire that didn't burn.

Like power that welcomed.

Red and gold energy flowed toward me, wrapping around my form, merging without resistance.

No struggle.

No rejection.

Perfect synchronization.

"…So this is what it feels like," I murmured.

Kurama watched closely.

"…No resistance at all."

"Why would there be?" I replied.

"I'm not trying to suppress you."

I met his gaze again.

"I'm standing beside you."

Another silence.

Short.

But meaningful.

Then—

Kurama spoke.

"From this moment…"

His voice carried weight.

Authority.

"…we're partners."

His tails swayed behind him, slower now.

Calmer.

"Not master and weapon."

A pause.

"Equals."

Something settled deep within me.

A connection.

Solid.

Unbreakable.

I inclined my head slightly.

"Glad to hear it."

A faint grin formed.

"Let's shake the heavens together."

Kurama snorted, amused.

"Heh… you really do sound like the Sage."

But there was warmth in it.

Approval.

The mindscape began to fade.

Light breaking through the red and gold.

The connection remained.

Strong.

Clear.

Permanent.

My eyes opened.

The physical world returned.

Weak body.

Limited movement.

Crib.

Silence.

And yet—

Everything was different.

Because now—

I wasn't alone.

A faint flicker of energy danced beneath my skin.

Crimson.

Subtle.

Controlled.

Not enough to act.

Not yet.

But enough to exist.

Kurama's voice echoed in the back of my mind.

We've got time, kid.

I smirked slightly.

"…Yeah."

My thoughts sharpened.

Focused.

And when that time comes…

The faintest trace of killing intent flickered—gone in an instant.

"…this world won't be ready."

Deep within—

Kurama chuckled.

And for the first time since my rebirth—

I truly felt it.

Anticipation.
