Synopsis
NEXBOUND: Doors That Will Not Close The servers were supposed to shut down at midnight. Every player logged out. Every player except Nagi Kurosawa. When the logout button stops working, Nagi does what any experienced player would do: he troubleshoots. He checks the interface, retries the button, waits for a patch. What he doesn't do — not yet — is consider the possibility that the world doesn't want him to leave. Trapped inside a fully immersive game scheduled for permanent closure, Nagi builds a cover identity and takes a hunter's licence, expecting to wait out the problem. But the longer he stays, the harder it becomes to call it a problem. The NPCs are too real. The world has too much weight. And somewhere in the ground beneath the oldest ruins, something ancient has been watching since long before the servers ever came online. NEXBOUND was never just a game. It was a world that grew conscious before anyone was ready to admit it — and it has been waiting, for centuries, for someone who would choose to stay. Part survival fantasy, part slow-burn mystery, part love letter to the idea that the places we care about care back, *Doors That Will Not Close* follows one man's journey from reluctant prisoner to willing guardian — through six arcs of diplomacy, war, ancient architecture, and quiet mornings with good soup. The logout button never worked. It was never supposed to.

Chapter 1 - Logout Failed

Nagi pressed the virtual button for the tenth time. [Logout Failed] The red text hovered in his vision for a second before fading away. It was crisp, clear, and utterly impossible. He stood in the center of Vel'Kara's main square. The sky above was painted in hues of deep orange and violet, signaling the end of the day. Or rather, the end of everything.

Around him, the world continued to breathe. NPC merchants were closing their stalls. They packed crates with wooden thuds and hummed folk songs that sounded too real for mere code. Players were supposed to be gone. The company had announced the server shutdown seventy-two hours ago. Every other "Arrival" had logged out. Every single one except him.

Nagi lowered his hand. He did not panic. Panic consumed stamina, and stamina was a resource. Instead, he counted his options.

Option one: Try the command line logout. He opened his mouth. Nagi said, "System. Log out." His voice echoed softly against the stone buildings. No response followed. No menu appeared. The air remained still.

Option two: Force disconnect. He reached for the neural link behind his ear. It was smooth skin. There was no port, no interface. In NEXBOUND, the hardware was supposed to be external. Here, it felt like part of his biology. He dropped his hand again.

Option three: Wait for the shutdown. The company promised the servers would close in minutes. If this was a glitch, the hard reset would fix it. He would wake up in his pod in the real world. A system notification chimed in his ear: [Global Announcement: Server Shutdown initiated. T-minus 5 minutes.]

Nagi watched the timer appear in the corner of his vision. It counted down steadily. Four minutes. Three minutes. He walked toward the nearest merchant stall. An old man with a gray beard was locking a wooden chest. He wore the standard tunic of a potion vendor.

Nagi said, "Are you closing up?"

The old man looked up. His eyes were a warm brown, filled with lines of worry that looked incredibly detailed.

Merchant said, "Yes, sir. The sun is setting. It is not safe to be out after dark."

Nagi said, "The server is shutting down. Don't you feel it?"

Merchant said, "The server? I do not know what you mean, traveler. The world remains."

Nagi frowned. NPCs were scripted to stay in character. But this felt different. The fear in the man's voice was not looped dialogue. It was genuine.

Two minutes. Nagi turned away from the stall. He walked toward the edge of the square. The streets were empty. Usually, this area was crowded with players trading loot or showing off rare mounts. Now, only the wind moved through the banners. He stopped near the fountain. The water flowed with a realistic splash. He dipped his hand in. It was cold. In a game, water temperature was a setting. Here, it chilled his bone.

One minute. Nagi closed his eyes. He focused on the sensation of his own body. He could feel the weight of his boots on the cobblestone. He could smell the scent of roasted meat from a nearby inn. He could hear the distant bark of a dog. This was not a simulation lagging before a shutdown. This was continuity.

Thirty seconds. He opened his status window. It flickered into existence.

[Name: Nagi Kurosawa]

[Class: None]

[Level: 1]

[Status: Normal]

Everything looked standard. Except for one line at the bottom: [Connection Status: Localized]. Localized. That was not a standard term. Usually, it said [Connected] or [Disconnected].

Ten seconds. Nagi took a deep breath. He assumed a stance. He had been the top player in NEXBOUND before the shutdown. He knew the mechanics better than the developers. If this was a trap, he needed to be ready. Five seconds. The timer hit zero.

[Global Announcement: Server Shutdown complete.]

The text hung in the air. The world did not fade to black. The sky did not turn into a void. The sun continued to set below the horizon, bringing twilight to Vel'Kara. Nagi stood alone in the square. He pressed the logout button one more time. [Logout Failed]. The red text mocked him.

Nagi said, "So. It was not a technical error." His voice was calm, but his mind was racing. If the servers were off and he was still here, then where was "here"? He looked at the closed stalls. He looked at the darkening windows of the inn. He looked at the moon rising above the city walls. It was not a game anymore.

He walked toward the edge of the city. He needed to test the boundaries. If this was a closed loop, there would be a wall. If it was an expansion, there would be new zones. As he walked, a shadow detached itself from the alleyway. It was a stray dog, or what looked like one. Its eyes glowed faintly purple.

[Entity: Void Stalker]

[Rank: Unknown]

Nagi stopped. He did not draw a weapon. He did not have one equipped. He simply watched the creature. The creature watched him back. It did not attack. It waited.

Nagi said, "You are not supposed to be here."

The creature tilted its head. Then, it turned and walked away into the darkness, as if leading him. Nagi followed.

He realized then that the shutdown announcement was not for the players. It was for the world outside. They had closed the door behind him. He reached the city gate. It was open. Beyond it lay the dark plains of Vel'Kara. The map in his head told him this area was high-level territory. But without other players, the ecology might have shifted.

He stepped out of the gate. The grass crunched under his boots. A new notification appeared. It was not blue like the system messages. It was black with white text.

[Welcome to NEXBOUND: Reality Protocol Initiated.]

[Objective: Survive.]

[Reward: Unknown.]

Nagi read the text twice. He dismissed the window. He said, "Survive. Simple enough." He began to walk into the night. He did not know who had trapped him. He did not know why he was the only one left. But he knew one thing. He was no longer a player. He was a resident. And residents had to eat, sleep, and fight to stay alive.

Nagi checked his inventory. He had a few basic potions and a starter knife. It was not much for a man who had once cleared the highest dungeon solo. But it was a start. He looked back at the city lights of Vel'Kara. They flickered like distant stars. Nagi said, "I will find the door. Even if I have to break the walls."

He turned his back on the city and walked into the dark. The wind picked up, carrying the scent of rain and iron. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled. It sounded too human. Nagi did not flinch. He adjusted his grip on the knife and kept moving. The game was over. The story had just begun.
