Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Quiet Currents

Lena did not return to her chambers immediately after leaving the Exchange Park, even though Arin had suggested it gently more than once, because something about the day still felt unfinished to her, not in a way that made her uneasy, but in a way that made her restless, as though there was still something she was meant to do or understand before allowing it to end.

She walked slowly through the inner paths of the estate, her steps unhurried, her fingers brushing lightly against the edges of leaves and stone as she passed, her thoughts drifting without direction, though every now and then they circled back to the moment at the market, to that brief, strange certainty that had come over her without warning and disappeared just as quickly.

It had not felt like guessing.

That was the part she could not quite ignore.

She had not thought about what might happen, she had not tried to predict anything, and yet for that single instant she had known, not clearly, not fully, but enough to speak before it happened, enough to change something, even if only slightly.

She exhaled softly, shaking her head as if to dismiss it, because the more she tried to hold onto the feeling, the less sense it made, and she was not someone who liked holding onto things that refused to be understood.

"It was nothing," she murmured under her breath, though the words felt less certain than they had earlier.

Arin, walking just behind her, heard it but did not respond immediately, her silence more observant than dismissive, as though she was waiting to see if Lena would say more on her own.

Lena did not.

Instead, she changed direction slightly, her steps carrying her toward a quieter part of the estate, where the noise of movement faded and the air felt stiller, more contained, the kind of place she often found herself when she wanted to think without realizing she was doing so.

"Did you notice anything strange today?" Lena asked after a moment, her tone casual, as though the question had only just come to her.

Arin's response was measured. "Strange in what way, my lady?"

Lena hesitated briefly, then shrugged lightly. "I don't know, just… different, I suppose."

Arin considered her words before answering. "Nothing that stands apart from what is expected."

Lena nodded, accepting the answer easily, though something about it felt too simple, too clean, as though it left no room for the small, unexplainable things she had begun to notice.

They continued walking until the estate opened slightly ahead of them, leading toward one of the outer courtyards, where the training grounds lay not far beyond, and it was there that Lena spotted her brother.

He stood among a few others, though his presence drew attention even without effort, his movements relaxed yet controlled as he spoke, his posture carrying a quiet confidence that came as naturally to him as breathing.

Lena's expression softened almost immediately, and without thinking too much about it, she made her way toward him.

"You're avoiding me," she said as she approached, her tone light, though her eyes watched him more closely than her words suggested.

He turned, a smile already forming as soon as he saw her. "That would require effort."

"You're capable of it," she replied.

"Not when it comes to you," he said easily.

She folded her arms slightly, not entirely convinced. "Then why do I feel like every time I ask you something important, you suddenly have somewhere else to be?"

He laughed, the sound quiet but genuine. "Maybe because your important questions are never as simple as you think they are."

Lena stepped closer, her gaze steady now, her earlier lightness shifting just slightly. "Then answer one properly."

He watched her, the amusement in his expression fading just enough to make space for something more attentive. "Go on."

She hesitated, not because she did not know what to ask, but because she was not entirely sure how to put it into words without sounding like she was imagining things.

"Today," she began slowly, "at the park, something happened, and I knew it would happen before it did, not clearly, not like I could explain it, but enough to react, and I don't understand why."

For a moment, he said nothing.

His gaze held hers, searching in a way that made her feel like he was looking for something specific, something beyond what she had just said.

"You're sure?" he asked finally, his tone quieter now.

Lena nodded. "It wasn't like guessing."

He exhaled softly, his attention shifting briefly as though considering something before returning to her. "Then maybe it's nothing you need to worry about yet."

She frowned slightly. "That's not an answer."

"It is," he said, though not unkindly, "just not the one you want."

She held his gaze for a second longer before letting out a small breath, her shoulders relaxing as she stepped back. "You do this on purpose."

"Most things I do are on purpose," he replied.

She almost smiled.

"Then next time," she said lightly, "try doing something useful on purpose."

"I'll think about it," he said.

She knew he wouldn't.

But she let it go anyway.

As she turned away, her thoughts lingered for a moment on the conversation, on the way he had responded, on the brief pause before he had spoken, though she did not hold onto it long enough for it to become suspicion, because that was not how she saw him, not how she had ever seen any of them.

Behind her, he remained where he was, his expression no longer as light as before, his gaze following her for a moment longer than necessary before shifting away.

Lena continued walking, her steps steady as she made her way back toward the inner halls, her mind gradually settling once more into something familiar, something easier to carry.

The day had been strange.

But not enough to change anything.

Not yet.

And as she disappeared further into the quiet of the estate, she did not notice the way the air around her seemed to still for just a second too long, as though something unseen had brushed too close before pulling away again.

She only knew that for reasons she could not explain, she did not feel entirely alone anymore, even when there was no one beside her.
