Chapter 1 - Return of the Black Sheep

The air in the hallway was thick and heavy, smelling like old sweat and fear. The kind of smell that stays in your nose and never really goes away. It was a normal morning at Daeshin High, but "normal" here was different from other schools. Here, "normal" meant a fight every other hour.

I stood at the main entrance, looking at the large, rusty gates. They looked more like prison gates than a school entrance. I was wearing the mandatory uniform – white shirt, grey trousers, and a blue blazer. It felt strange. I hadn't worn a uniform in years.

My name is Kang Han-Jun. I used to be an underground MMA fighter. A prodigy, they called me. Fast, strong, and brutal. But after one too many incidents, I was banned from the ring. At 21, I was washed up. Then, the government found me.

"A second chance," they said. "Go back to school and clean it up. We need a Designated Bully to break the system."

I didn't do it for the second chance. I did it because I was bored and my hands were starting to twitch.

I walked past the gates. Students were streaming in, but they weren't talking or laughing like normal teenagers. They were tense, walking with their heads down, looking at the floor. Fear was the only ruler here.

"Hey, new kid!" A voice boomed behind me. I didn't turn around. I just kept walking, my hands in my pockets.

"Are you deaf, bastard?" The voice was closer now. I felt a hand grab my shoulder.

I stopped and slowly turned my head. There was a guy standing there, about a foot taller than me and built like a brick wall. His blazer was unbuttoned, and his shirt was dirty. He had a smug look on his face. Behind him stood three other guys, all grinning.

"What?" I asked, my voice calm and low.

"Don't 'what' me, punk," he sneered. "I'm Kim Dong-Gyun. I run this entrance. New kids pay a 'respect fee'. Give me your wallet."

I looked at him, up and down. He was a typical schoolyard bully. Big muscles, no brain, and way too much confidence. He was a rookie compared to the fighters I used to face.

"No," I said, simply.

The smug look on his face vanished. His friends stopped grinning and looked at each other in shock. Nobody ever said "no" to Kim Dong-Gyun.

"What did you say?" he growled, his face getting red with anger.

"I said no," I repeated, my tone unchanging. "Now, get your hand off my shoulder. Before you regret it."

A wave of laughter erupted from his friends. "Hey, did you hear that? The new kid thinks he's a tough guy!" one of them mocked.

Dong-Gyun didn't laugh. He just tightened his grip on my shoulder. I could feel his fingers digging into my muscle.

"You're a brave little bastard, aren't you?" he hissed, his face close to mine. "I'm going to enjoy breaking you."

He pulled back his fist and swung it towards my face. It was a slow, clumsy punch. No technique, just brute force.

I didn't move. I didn't have to. I just tilted my head slightly to the left. The punch missed me by inches.

Dong-Gyun stumbled, surprised by my sudden movement. I didn't give him a chance to recover.

My right hand shot out from my pocket. It wasn't a punch. It was a spear. My fingers were extended, straight and stiff. My palm was facing down.

Thwack!

My hand connected with his throat. It was a precise, controlled strike. It didn't break his larynx, but it was enough to make him choke and gaspe for air.

Dong-Gyun clutched his throat, his eyes wide with surprise and pain. He tried to speak, but only a gurgling sound came out.

His friends stopped laughing. Their eyes were wide, and they were staring at me like I was a ghost.

"I told you to get your hand off my shoulder," I said, looking down at him. "Now, I'm going to tell you something else. My name is Kang Han-Jun. And I'm going to run this school. And all of you... all of you are going to show me respect."

I walked past them, my hands back in my pockets. As I walked down the hallway, the other students stepped aside, creating a clear path for me. They were all staring at me, their eyes filled with fear and awe.

"The new kid... he beat Dong-Gyun with one hit!"

"I can't believe it! He just came in and took down the king of the entrance!"

I didn't listen to their chatter. I knew that Dong-Gyun was just the first step. The first rung of the ladder. To truly conquer this school, I had to take down the big bosses. The ones who pulled the strings. The ones who ruled with an iron fist.

The King of Daeshin High, Park Jin-Woo, was my ultimate target. I had to build up my reputation, recruit some allies, and then, and only then, would I be able to challenge him.

I was ready for it. My hands were already beginning to twitch.

But I wasn't just here to fight. I was here to send a message. A message that the old ways were over. The era of the bullies was coming to an end. A new ruler had arrived. And his name was Kang Han-Jun.

My feet guided me to the cafeteria. The smell of cheap ramen and stale tteokbokki was unbearable, yet I felt a strange sense of comfort in the familiarity of it all. I had to admit, a small part of me enjoyed the chaos, the power struggle, the adrenaline rush. It was better than sitting on my couch, watching the world pass me by.

I took a deep breath, letting the smell of the cafeteria fill my lungs. It was the smell of my new life. A life where I was the ruler, the king, the one who pulled the strings. It was a good feeling. A feeling that I hadn't felt in a very long time.

"So, you're the one they're all talking about?"

I stopped and slowly turned my head. There was a girl standing there, leaning against a locker. She had short, dark hair, and her eyes were filled with a strange kind of intelligence.

"And you are?" I asked, my voice calm and low.

"My name is Lee So-Mi," she said, her voice smooth and confident. "And I have a proposition for you."

I looked at her, up and down. She was intriguing. Different from the others. "I'm listening," I said.

A sly grin appeared on her face. "You want to take down Jin-Woo, don't you? I can help you with that. But first, you have to help me with something."

I narrowed my eyes. "What kind of something?"

Her grin widened, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth. "There's a fight happening tonight. An underground fight. And I need you to be there."

"An underground fight?" I asked, my voice slightly raised. "What kind of underground fight?"

"The kind where you don't just lose... you get broken," she whispered, her voice filled with a strange kind of excitement.

I looked at her, my eyes narrowing even further. A surge of adrenaline rushed through my body. "Where and when?" I asked, my voice filled with a dangerous edge.

She smiled, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "I'll text you the details. Be there, or don't. But I have a feeling that you're not the type to walk away from a challenge."

She turned and walked away, her hips swaying slightly as she moved. I watched her go, a million questions racing through my mind.

An underground fight? A chance to take down Jin-Woo? It sounded too good to be true. But I knew that So-Mi wasn't the type to play games. She was serious. And she had a plan. A plan that could help me achieve my goal.

I took a deep breath, letting the adrenaline rush through my body. My hands were already starting to twitch. The real fight was about to begin. And I was ready for it.

The night was cool and quiet, but the underground arena was filled with a primal, raw energy. The air was thick with the smell of sweat, blood, and cheap beer. The crowd was screaming, cheering, roaring with a bloodlust that was almost tangible.

I stood in the center of the ring, my hands wrapped in tape. My opponent, a massive, muscular guy named Choi Tae-Ho, was staring at me with eyes filled with rage. He was known for his brutal strength and his devastating knockout power.

"You're going to pay for what you did to Dong-Gyun!" he growled, his voice filled with a dangerous edge.

I didn't say anything. I just focused on his movements, my body tensed, my mind calm and clear. The referee raised his arm, the crowd roared, and then, the fight began.

It was a brutal, bloody, and merciless fight. But I was the one who was standing, my fists raised, my face covered in blood. I had won. I had beaten the legend. I had proven myself.

As the crowd cheered my name, So-Mi was standing near the edge of the ring, a sly grin on her face.

But as I raised my fists, my vision blurring, my body exhausted, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest. A pain that I had felt before. A pain that meant that my old injury was acting up.

My body began to shake, my legs began to buckle, and then, I fell to the ground, my eyes wide with a strange kind of terror.

The crowd gasped, their cheers turning into cries of concern. So-Mi was running towards me, her face pale with fear.

As I lay on the cold, hard ground, my eyes closing, my mind fading, I knew that this wasn't the end. This was just the beginning. The beginning of a long and bloody road. A road that would lead me to the truth. The truth about what happened to me. The truth about who I really was.

But first, I had to survive this night. And as the darkness consumed me, I knew that my journey was just beginning. A journey that would take me to the very edge of human endurance. A journey that would make me the strongest... or it would break me.
