Chapter 1 - The Voice Beneath the Waves

Kael's lungs burned, his arms ached, and the sea around him roared like a living beast. He had survived the first attack of the monstrous sea creature, but barely. Every instinct screamed at him to run, but run where? There was nothing but water stretching endlessly in every direction, waves high enough to swallow him whole.

He swallowed hard and tried to calm himself, forcing his mind to think. "Okay… survive first. Don't panic. Look for anything—anything I can grab."

His eyes scanned the waves. A flash of dark brown caught his attention—something floating just ahead. A piece of driftwood, big enough to hold him up. Desperation gave him strength, and he kicked toward it, arms churning, heart hammering. Finally, he clutched it, hugging it like a lifeline. He collapsed onto it, coughing violently as salty water burned his throat and stung his eyes.

For a few moments, the world felt silent. Only the wind and waves surrounded him. Then came a small sound—a splash, distant but deliberate. Kael froze. His mind raced.

Another shape emerged from the water. Smaller than the beast from before, but unmistakably alive. It moved quickly, almost as if it were studying him. His heart jumped. Was it a predator? Or… something else?

Before he could decide, a voice shouted across the waves, faint but urgent:

"Hey! Over here!"

Kael turned toward the sound. A small sail, barely visible over the horizon, bobbed in the waves. A boat! Not big, but a chance to survive. His arms pumped harder, and he pushed the driftwood toward it.

The closer he got, the more he realized he wasn't alone. On the deck stood a figure—a girl, waving frantically. She had a straw hat, a grin, and eyes that seemed sharp and fearless.

"Hold on! I've got you!" she called.

Kael didn't hesitate. Summoning every ounce of his exhausted strength, he grabbed the edge of the boat. The girl helped pull him aboard. Once on deck, he collapsed completely, coughing up seawater.

"Are you insane? The storm out here isn't safe!" she exclaimed.

"I… I didn't have a choice," Kael rasped. "I… I didn't know where else to go."

The girl shook her head but didn't scold him further. Instead, she introduced herself.

"I'm Lyra. And you're lucky I was sailing by. Name's?"

"Kael," he managed, weakly.

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Well, Kael… you just got a free ticket to the great sea. Welcome aboard."

Kael tried to smile, but it felt strange—foreign. Alive. He was still shaky, still unsure about this new world, but for the first time, a tiny spark of hope flickered inside him.

He looked out at the endless ocean, feeling the waves beneath the boat. The sea was huge, wild, and unpredictable. And for the first time, he felt… like maybe, just maybe, he could find his way.

Lyra guided him to a small corner of the deck. She handed him a flask of fresh water and some dried rations. "Drink. Eat. You'll need energy if you plan on surviving out here."

Kael took the water first, and as it touched his lips, he felt that same strange pulse inside him—the Tide Binding. Not fully active, but present, like the ocean itself was acknowledging him. A shiver ran down his spine.

"This… this is my power, isn't it?" he whispered.

Lyra glanced at him, tilting her head curiously. "Looks like it. Never seen anyone come out of a storm like that and… whatever that was," she said, nodding toward the way the water had shifted around him, "without some kind of gift from the sea."

Kael didn't have an answer. All he knew was the strange energy flowing through him, and a flicker of excitement surged—half fear, half thrill.

After he ate, Lyra explained more about the world. "You're in the Outer Seas. Dangerous waters. Pirates, sea monsters, storms that could crush a ship in minutes. Most sailors avoid it entirely."

Kael listened intently. Every word made his heart beat faster. This wasn't just survival anymore. This was an adventure. A real adventure, in a world larger than anything he had ever imagined.

Lyra leaned against the mast, eyeing him carefully. "You look like someone who's never been at sea before. The ocean isn't just water—it's alive. Treat it well, respect it, and it might favor you. Disrespect it, and it'll swallow you whole. Literally."

Kael swallowed, nodding. He could feel the truth of her words. He'd been nearly crushed, nearly eaten, and yet… he had survived. Something inside him had changed.

Hours passed. The storm faded into a restless drizzle, and the waves calmed just enough for Kael to take in his surroundings. Small islands dotted the horizon—some jagged and rocky, others lush and green. Islands that might hold food, shelter, or even people. Each one was a possibility, a new challenge, a chance to grow stronger.

Lyra glanced at Kael. "You'll need to learn how to handle the Tide Binding if you want to survive in waters like these. I can show you the basics, but you'll have to practice. A power that strong can just as easily kill its user if they're not careful."

Kael clenched his fists. "I… I want to learn. I don't want to die out here."

"Good," she said, smiling faintly. "Because the sea won't wait for anyone. And it certainly won't wait for you to get ready."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the ocean in streaks of orange and gold, Kael stepped to the edge of the boat. The waves lapped gently against the hull. For the first time, he felt the rhythm of the sea—the pulse, the current, the life inside it.

He focused on the sensation, letting it flow into him. Slowly, carefully, he tried to move his hand. The water near the boat stirred. Not much… but enough to make him gasp.

He had felt the first real control of his Tide Binding. It was unstable, small, imperfect—but it was his.

Kael smiled, a genuine smile this time. "Alright, sea," he whispered. "Let's see where you take me."

Above him, the first stars began to appear. Endless sky, endless ocean, endless possibilities. This was just the beginning. The world was enormous, and he was small. But for the first time, he felt ready to take it on.

The adventure of a lifetime awaited.

And Kael was ready to step forward.
