Chapter 28 - inside the empire

Secrets Behind Closed Doors

As they walked through the house, Ryan spotted crates.

Stacked.

Sealed.

Hidden in plain sight.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"What's in those?" he asked, his voice calm.

For a brief moment—

Silence.

Don Alessandro didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he glanced at Victor.

"Open one."

Victor stepped forward without hesitation, kneeling beside one of the crates. With quick, practiced movements, he pried it open.

The lid creaked.

Then—

It lifted.

Ryan stepped closer.

And froze.

Weapons.

Rows of them.

Guns. Ammunition. Blades.

Organized.

Clean.

Deadly.

"Welcome to reality," Alessandro said quietly.

Ryan's gaze lingered on the contents.

This wasn't training anymore.

This was war.

Behind him—

A voice.

"You don't look surprised."

Ryan turned.

Sofia.

Up close, she was even more dangerous.

Not because of strength.

But because of how calm she looked… standing in the middle of chaos like she belonged there.

"I expected something like this," Ryan replied.

She tilted her head slightly, studying him.

"Most people don't."

Ryan shrugged.

"Most people aren't me."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Confidence. I like that."

Across the room, Marco watched.

Silent.

Unimpressed.

Don Alessandro clapped his hands once, drawing attention.

"This is what we deal with," he said. "Supply. Power. Control."

He stepped closer to Ryan.

"And now… you're part of it."

Ryan didn't respond.

But inside—

Something settled.

He wasn't walking away from this.

Not anymore.

"Victor," Alessandro called. "Show him the system."

Victor nodded and motioned for Ryan to follow.

As they walked, Sofia fell into step beside him.

Not invited.

Not dismissed.

"You're new," she said casually.

"Obviously."

She smirked.

"And already trusted enough to be shown this?"

Ryan glanced at her.

"Sounds like you're questioning your boss."

Her eyes sharpened slightly.

"Sounds like you're not answering my question."

A pause.

Then Ryan leaned slightly closer.

"Maybe I'm not here to answer questions."

For a second—

Their eyes locked.

Tension.

Real.

Unspoken.

Then—

Victor cleared his throat.

"This way."

They stepped into another room.

Screens lined the walls.

Cameras.

Maps.

Data.

"This is where we monitor everything," Victor explained. "Movements. Deals. Targets."

Ryan scanned the screens.

Then—

One caught his eye.

A face.

Familiar.

His breath stilled.

The lorry driver.

Alive.

Moving freely.

Ryan's expression didn't change.

But inside—

Rage exploded.

Sofia noticed.

Of course she did.

"You recognize something?" she asked quietly.

Ryan's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Yeah."

He stepped closer to the screen.

Eyes locked.

"I do."

Behind him, Don Alessandro watched.

Silent.

Calculating.

Because in that moment—

He saw it.

Not just potential.

But something far more dangerous.

A man with a reason to burn everything down.
