Chapter 154 - The Distance Between Them

The Distance Between Them

The silence followed them upstairs.

Not peaceful.

Heavy.

Like something had shifted… and couldn't be undone.

Elara walked ahead.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Her body still weak—

But that wasn't what made her steps unsteady.

It was her heart.

Damian followed behind.

Close enough to catch her if she fell.

But not close enough to touch her.

Because for the first time—

He didn't know if he was allowed to.

They reached the room.

The same room.

Their room.

But it didn't feel the same anymore.

Elara stepped inside.

She didn't look at him.

Instead—

She went to the window.

Standing there.

Quiet.

Still.

Damian stayed by the door.

Watching her.

Waiting.

"Elara…"

He finally said her name.

She didn't turn.

"I need… time."

Her voice was soft.

But distant.

Something inside Damian tightened.

"Time for what?"

She closed her eyes briefly.

"To understand…"

A pause.

"…everything."

He took a step forward.

"I did what I had to do."

"I know."

She turned this time.

Slowly.

Her eyes met his.

And that was when he saw it.

Not hate.

Not anger.

Fear.

And that—

Hit him harder than anything else.

"I know you were protecting me…"

She said softly.

"But what happens when there's no one to protect?"

A pause.

"What happens when it's just… you?"

Damian didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

Elara took a step back.

A small one.

But it felt like distance.

"I love you."

She said it quietly.

And his heart stopped for a second.

"But I'm scared of what you can become."

The words settled between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Damian clenched his jaw.

"I'm not going to hurt you."

"I know you won't."

Another step back.

"But you're hurting yourself…"

Her voice broke slightly.

"And I don't know how to fix that."

Silence filled the room again.

Damian had faced guns.

War.

Death.

But this—

This helplessness—

It was new.

"What do you want me to do?"

His voice was lower now.

Not commanding.

Not cold.

Just… real.

Elara looked at him.

And that broke her more.

Because for the first time—

He wasn't the devil.

He was just a man…

Trying not to lose her.

"I don't know…"

She whispered.

And that answer—

Was worse than anything.

Because there was no clear way out.

No fix.

Only distance.

Damian nodded slowly.

Then stepped back.

Giving her space.

Even though it felt like losing her.

"I'll be downstairs."

He turned.

And walked out.

The door closed softly behind him.

Elara stood there.

Alone.

Her chest tight.

Tears finally falling.

Because she loved him.

But love…

Was starting to feel like something dangerous.
