Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty-Four: An Evening Meant For Two

The mansion grew quieter as the evening settled in.

For once, there were no urgent calls, no interruptions, no pressure hanging in the air.

Just… stillness.

Alicia stood in front of her mirror, adjusting the soft fabric of her dress.

Nothing extravagant.

But elegant.

Simple.

Her fingers paused.

Why was she nervous?

A gentle knock came at the door.

"Alicia."

Michael.

Her heart skipped.

"Come in."

The door opened slowly, and for a moment

Neither of them spoke.

Michael's gaze lingered on her, something unreadable but warm in his eyes.

"You look…" he started, then stopped.

Alicia tilted her head slightly.

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"Like I'm going to have a hard time focusing tonight."

A soft laugh escaped her.

"That bad?"

"Worse," he said quietly.

For a second, the air between them shifted again soft, intimate, and familiar now.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

Michael extended his hand toward her.

"You'll see."

She hesitated only a second before placing her hand in his.

Downstairs, James stood near the entrance, already prepared.

"Car is ready, sir."

Maria smiled subtly as Alicia passed.

Lina exchanged a knowing glance with her.

Even they could tell

Tonight was different.

Sophie leaned against the staircase, watching with a grin.

"Well, well," she whispered. "Look at them."

Adrian stepped beside her.

"They clean up nicely," he said.

Sophie nudged him lightly.

"You're impossible."

"Yet you're still standing here talking to me."

She rolled her eyes but didn't move away.

Outside, the car door opened.

Michael guided Alicia in with a gentle hand at her back.

A simple gesture.

But it made her heart race.

The drive was quiet.

Comfortable.

Their hands remained close, brushing once, then again until finally…

Their fingers intertwined naturally.

Alicia glanced at him.

"You planned this?"

Michael nodded slightly.

"I thought you deserved a break."

Her voice softened.

"And you?"

He looked at her.

"I wanted one too."

They arrived at a quiet, elegant restaurant private, secluded, far from attention.

Candles flickered softly.

Music played low in the background.

Michael pulled out her chair.

Alicia smiled as she sat.

"You're full of surprises," she said.

"Not all of them are bad," he replied.

Dinner passed slowly, filled with quiet laughter and small conversations that felt… easy.

Natural.

At one point, Alicia reached for her glass at the same time Michael did.

Their fingers touched again.

Neither pulled away immediately.

"You do that a lot," she said softly.

"Do what?"

"Find ways to touch me."

Michael's lips curved slightly.

"And you don't stop me."

Alicia looked down, smiling faintly.

"…Maybe I don't want to."

Silence followed.

But it wasn't awkward.

It was full.

Later, they stepped outside onto a quiet terrace.

The night air was cool.

The city lights stretched endlessly below.

Alicia leaned lightly against the railing.

Michael stood beside her.

Close.

Always close now.

"This feels unreal," she admitted softly.

"What does?"

"All of it."

She turned to him.

"You… us… this moment."

Michael didn't hesitate this time.

He reached for her, pulling her gently closer.

"It's real," he said.

Her heart raced again.

"I don't want this to end," she whispered.

"Then don't let it," he replied.

And then

He kissed her.

Not hesitant.

Not uncertain.

Deep. Warm. Certain.

Alicia melted into him, her hands resting against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm beneath.

For a moment…

Nothing else existed.

Back at the mansion

Sophie sat curled on the couch, glancing at the clock.

"They've been gone a while," she said.

Adrian sat nearby, relaxed.

"Good."

Sophie looked at him.

"You're not worried?"

"No," he said calmly.

A pause.

Then

"You worry enough for both of us."

She huffed softly.

But smiled.

"You know," she said, quieter now, "you're different too."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

Sophie hesitated.

Then said

"…Better."

He didn't joke this time.

Didn't tease.

He just looked at her.

And smiled.

In the study, Daniel remained at his post, screens glowing in the dim light.

Watching. Tracking. Waiting.

And outside the mansion gates

The enemy stood in the shadows.

Silent. Patient.

But even they could see it now.

This wasn't just a marriage anymore.

It was something real.

Something strong.

And that made everything… far more dangerous.
