The morning sun stretched across the city skyline, glinting off the glass towers of M Designs' headquarters. Inside, Mau was already juggling three tasks at once: reviewing design prototypes, fielding supplier emails, and negotiating a last-minute collaboration with an international investor.
"Papa, look!" Samantha's tiny voice rang from the entrance of the office. She was dragging a large cardboard "invention" that was mostly tape, sticks, and colored paper.
Tim peeked over his laptop. "Oh no… what is she dragging into the empire this time?"
Samantha beamed. "It's my squirrel rescue machine! If squirrels get stuck on roofs, this machine will save them automatically!"
Mau laughed, spinning her chair toward the little girl. "Samantha, I love your ambition. But maybe we test this outside first?"
"Outside is boring! The office is where the squirrels are!" Samantha replied, dramatically pointing to a potted plant.
Tim sighed, giving Mau a helpless look. "I think our empire is about to get… very wild."
Later that day, Samantha and Tay Eming set up a small "laboratory corner" on the office terrace. Tay Eming crouched beside her, showing her how to attach a pulley system to a small bucket.
"Remember, Samantha," Tay Eming said patiently, "engineering is about observation and testing. You must think about cause and effect."
Samantha nodded seriously, her curls bouncing. "Yes! And I must always include candy in my experiments!"
Tim leaned over the railing. "Candy in experiments? She's already a genius and now an entrepreneur. I can't keep up."
Mau chuckled. "That's the goal. Let her run wild and free, like in the Sierra Madre. Creativity first, empire second."
Meanwhile, Samantha's grandparents, Dale and Sierra, were visiting for the weekend. Sierra peeked over Samantha's makeshift blueprint.
"My goodness… this child is meticulous. And messy," Sierra said, laughing at a streak of paint across Samantha's cheek.
Dale nodded. "Just like her mother. But smarter, and somehow more fearless."
Samantha turned to them, brandishing a tiny pencil. "I am saving the squirrels! Mama said inventions can save the world if we work together!"
Dale laughed. "Then we're on squirrel duty."
Sierra shook her head. "And I thought we were here for a quiet weekend."
Back in the city, Mau and Tim had to attend a high-profile dinner event. Samantha insisted on accompanying them, insisting her squirrel machine needed "public beta testing."
During the event, Samantha wandered around the elegantly decorated hall, handing out miniature "blueprints" to confused guests, whispering, "You might need this one day!"
An investor whispered to Mau: "Is this… part of your presentation?"
Mau smiled, suppressing laughter. "Part of our creative strategy. Yes."
Tim shook his head, quietly laughing: "We are so doomed… and yet, so proud."
After the event, the family returned to the Sierra Madre for a weekend retreat. Samantha leapt out of the car, barefoot as always, and ran straight to the river.
"Papa! Mama! Look at the new squirrel bridge!" she shouted, pointing to a small, slightly wobbly structure of sticks and leaves.
Tay Eming crouched to inspect. "Hmm… structurally sound for a three-year-old engineer. That's impressive."
Mau picked Samantha up, hugging her. "You're incredible, little one. You see solutions everywhere."
Samantha looked up, grinning. "Because Mama taught me!"
Tim ruffled her curls. "And Papa is here for backup… mostly for candy."
Samantha laughed, scattering pebbles into the river, and the family joined in, throwing stones together, laughing until their sides ached.
That night, as Samantha slept, Mau and Tim sat on the balcony overlooking the forest. The stars sparkled like the countless possibilities in Samantha's mind.
Mau rested her head on Tim's shoulder. "Managing an empire, keeping the forest alive, raising Samantha… it's a lot, Tim."
Tim kissed her temple. "We'll manage. Together. And look at her—she's already a genius in the making."
Mau smiled softly, tracing a hand over her slightly rounded stomach. "And soon… she might have a little sibling to keep the family chaos going."
Tim's eyes lit up. "You mean…?"
Mau nodded, smiling. "Yes. We're going to have another little adventurer."
Tim laughed, hugging her tightly. "Our family is unstoppable."
