Chapter 5 - The Hard Path.

The paper was still in Kofi's hand.

His Senior High School results.

Good results.

Proof that he had changed.

Proof that he could do better.

But for how long?

That question stayed in his mind as he sat outside the house in Asempa.

The evening breeze was calm, but his thoughts were not.

"What next?"

It sounded like a simple question.

But for Kofi…

It wasn't.

Most of his classmates already had plans.

Some were preparing for university.

Others had families ready to support them.

Some had connections.

Opportunities.

Direction.

Kofi had none of that.

That night, his older brother sat beside him.

"You've done well," he said.

Kofi nodded.

"Thank you."

There was a pause.

Then the real conversation started.

"So… what are you going to do now?"

Kofi looked down.

He already knew the answer.

But saying it out loud made it real.

"I want to work," he said quietly.

His brother frowned slightly.

"Work?"

"Yes."

"What about school?"

Kofi hesitated.

Not because he was unsure.

But because he understood the weight of the decision.

"I don't want to continue," he said.

Silence.

"You sure about that?" his brother asked.

Kofi nodded slowly.

"I want to build something for myself."

It sounded strong.

But inside…

There was fear.

Because Kofi knew one thing.

The real world was not like school.

Entering Reality

A few days later, Kofi left Asempa again.

But this time…

It felt different.

There was no excitement.

No big dreams.

No expectations.

Just one goal.

Survive.

Accra welcomed him the same way it always did.

Busy.

Noisy.

Unforgiving.

This time, Kofi saw it differently.

Not as a place of dreams.

But as a place of struggle.

Finding a job was harder than he expected.

He moved from place to place.

Asking.

Waiting.

Hoping.

"Come back later."

"No vacancy."

"We'll call you."

The same answers.

Again and again.

Days turned into weeks.

Money became a problem.

Food became uncertain.

Kofi started to understand something quickly.

Out here…

No one cares.

Abossey Okai

Eventually, he found work.

At Abossey Okai.

The place was loud.

Filled with the sound of metal, engines, and shouting voices.

Men worked hard.

Sweat, oil, and dust covered everything.

This was not school.

This was survival.

Kofi was given small tasks at first.

Carrying tools.

Cleaning.

Running errands.

It wasn't easy.

But he accepted it.

Because he needed it.

The days were long.

The work was heavy.

But the pay…

Was small.

Still, Kofi stayed.

Until he started noticing something.

Something Was Wrong

His master.

The man he worked under.

At first, everything seemed normal.

Strict.

Demanding.

But normal.

Then slowly…

Things changed.

Money issues.

Unfair treatment.

Pressure.

Kofi watched.

Listened.

Observed.

Something didn't feel right.

One afternoon, after a long day of work, Kofi sat quietly, watching his master argue with another worker.

Voices raised.

Anger.

Tension.

"You think this place is easy?" the master shouted.

"If you don't like it, leave!"

Kofi said nothing.

But inside…

He was thinking.

Is this where I'm supposed to be?

A Dangerous Realization

Days later, something happened.

Kofi saw something he wasn't supposed to see.

Something that made him understand the truth.

This place…

Was not safe.

Not just difficult.

Not just stressful.

Dangerous.

That night, Kofi couldn't sleep.

He thought about everything.

The work.

The environment.

The people.

Then one thought became clear.

If I stay here… I might lose more than just this job.

Walking Away

The next morning, Kofi made a decision.

He stood in front of his master.

"I'm leaving," he said.

The man looked at him.

"You just started."

"I know."

"So why are you leaving?"

Kofi didn't explain everything.

He didn't need to.

"I don't want to continue," he said.

The master laughed slightly.

"You think outside is better?"

Kofi stayed quiet.

Because the truth was…

He didn't know.

But he knew one thing.

Staying was not an option.

So he walked away.

No plan.

No backup.

No guarantee.

Just…

Faith.
