Chapter 194 - Chapter 194: The Voice Beyond the Door

The underground city fell silent after the voice beyond the Door spoke. Ancient bells continued ringing throughout the cavern, their mournful resonance echoing between collapsing towers and shattered districts, yet somehow the sound felt distant now. Every eye was fixed on the abyss below. Every thought was focused on the same terrifying realization. Something beyond the Door had noticed them. Not the Sleeper. Not the First Son. Not the faceless giant. Something even deeper had turned its attention toward the prison.

That realization alone was enough to fill the city with dread.

Far across the ruined metropolis, the battle between the First Son and the faceless giant had stopped entirely. Golden light and endless darkness still swirled around them, tearing apart reality wherever they touched, but neither ancient being seemed interested in continuing their conflict. The First Son stood motionless atop the remains of a shattered tower, his golden eyes fixed on the darkness beneath the world. The faceless giant had frozen as well. The endless void where its face should have been remained turned toward the abyss, and for the first time since its emergence, it appeared uncertain.

The city trembled again.

A deep vibration rolled through the prison. Ancient walls cracked. Entire sections of roadway collapsed into the darkness below. The glowing rivers flowing through the underground metropolis surged violently, flooding nearby districts with radiant crystal water. It felt as though the city itself was reacting to the voice.

Kael remained motionless.

The black mark continued spreading across his arm.

Dark veins stretched beneath his skin, pulsing with an unnatural rhythm. Every pulse sent fragments of memory crashing into his mind. Faces. Cities. Battles. Ancient skies filled with impossible stars. None of it made sense yet. None of it felt complete. Yet every fragment carried the same feeling.

Loss.

The emotion lingered long after the memories vanished.

Beside him, Lyra continued watching the mark with growing concern. She had stopped asking questions. The answers were becoming increasingly disturbing.

Aren, however, had no such restraint.

"I feel like we're ignoring a very important problem."

Nobody responded.

The boy pointed directly at Kael's arm.

"That."

Still nobody responded.

Aren folded his arms.

"Fine. Ignore the cursed black symbol spreading across our friend's body. I'm sure that's healthy."

Selene sighed.

"You complain during every crisis."

Aren looked offended.

"Because every crisis deserves complaining."

The exchange might have seemed normal under different circumstances. Here, standing above a collapsing ancient prison while reality slowly unraveled around them, it only emphasized how absurd the situation had become.

Another tremor shook the city.

This one felt different.

Stronger.

Closer.

The reaction was immediate. Throughout the underground metropolis, millions of glowing symbols ignited simultaneously. Golden light surged through streets, towers, bridges, and walls. Ancient mechanisms buried beneath the city began awakening one after another. Massive sections of stone shifted into new positions. Entire districts rotated slowly as hidden structures emerged from below.

The prison was responding.

Not to the First Son.

Not to the faceless giant.

To the thing beyond the Door.

Theron stared at the awakening city with horror written across his face.

"The final defense..."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

General Caelan immediately turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

The old caretaker remained silent for several moments while another section of the city collapsed into the abyss. His gaze remained fixed on the glowing symbols illuminating the cavern.

Then he exhaled slowly.

"It means the prison believes the Door may open."

The words settled heavily over the observation platform.

Nobody liked them.

Not even slightly.

The city shook again.

Far below, hidden beneath the abyss, something moved.

The reaction spread instantly through the underground metropolis. Every Dreamer dropped to their knees. Every citizen cried out in fear. Even the Warden, still standing among the ruins of countless districts, slowly lowered its enormous head.

The city was bowing.

The realization sent a chill through everyone present.

Something beneath the world had moved.

And the prison itself was afraid.

Kael felt another memory surface.

This one was stronger.

Clearer.

The world vanished around him.

For a brief moment he stood somewhere else.

An enormous city stretched toward the horizon beneath a sky filled with golden stars. Countless towers rose from streets crowded with millions of people. Bells rang from distant temples. Laughter filled the air.

The city was alive.

Then the sky cracked.

The memory shifted instantly.

Panic erupted.

People screamed.

Entire districts burned.

The stars themselves seemed to shatter above the world.

At the center of the chaos stood two figures.

One possessed golden eyes.

The other carried a black symbol on his hand.

The same symbol spreading across Kael's arm.

The memory ended.

Reality returned.

Kael staggered slightly.

The First Son noticed immediately.

Even from across the city, the ancient being's gaze found him.

The golden-eyed figure remained silent for several moments.

Then he smiled.

Not playfully.

Not mockingly.

Sadly.

The expression lasted only a moment before disappearing.

Yet Kael saw it.

The First Son remembered that city.

The realization settled heavily in his chest.

He remembered all of it.

The war.

The prison.

The fall.

Everything.

The city suddenly darkened.

The change was immediate.

Every source of light dimmed simultaneously.

The bells stopped ringing.

The Dreamers stopped chanting.

The prison became silent.

A cold sensation spread through the cavern.

Not physical cold.

Something deeper.

The feeling of being watched.

Everyone felt it.

Every person standing on the observation platform slowly looked toward the abyss below.

Nobody wanted to.

Everyone did.

The darkness had changed.

It seemed deeper than before.

Larger than before.

Alive.

The First Son's expression hardened.

The faceless giant stepped backward.

The Warden raised its head.

And somewhere within the abyss, a pair of eyes opened.

The sight lasted only a second.

Two enormous golden eyes appearing within infinite darkness.

Then they vanished.

The city erupted into chaos.

The Dreamers screamed.

Citizens fled.

The prison shook violently.

Ancient towers collapsed throughout the metropolis.

The faceless giant roared.

The First Son vanished.

A moment later, he reappeared above the abyss.

Golden light exploded across the cavern.

Reality cracked.

The ancient being stood suspended above the darkness while countless symbols illuminated around him.

For the first time since his appearance, he looked angry.

Truly angry.

"Stay asleep."

His voice echoed throughout the prison.

The abyss answered.

A laugh emerged from below.

Not loud.

Not ancient.

Not monstrous.

Simply amused.

The sound froze every living thing in the city.

Then the voice spoke again.

"Why?"

Silence followed.

The First Son remained motionless.

Golden light continued radiating from his body while the prison trembled around him.

The voice beyond the Door laughed again.

This time the sound carried genuine curiosity.

"I have been waiting so long."

The city shook.

The abyss widened.

The prison screamed.

And somewhere beneath the world, behind the Sleeper, beyond the Door, something began reaching toward reality.
