Alex tried to escape from the hellscape that he was in for hours but still faced failure in the end.

Rimuru tried to perceive the surroundings with his skill. But there were no Magicules in the surroundings.

The worse possible scenario happened, if the spiritual body was truly dead Rimuru would have no problem consuming him with predator.
But through thought communication he realized the spiritual body infront of him is innocent person that died in an unfortunate circumstance was still aware with ego.
In the end Rimuru kindness did allow him to end an innocent person's life.
With no hope for survival Rimuru spoke in resignation.
"It's been a great journey Great Sage, you are the greatest partner I could ever hope"
"I guess this is where we send our goodbyes" Said Rimuru as his first and second life flashed in front of him.

The Body that made up Rimuru fell Apart, the spiritual body dismantled but somehow the Unique Skills etched into his Soul held together from complete dissipation. Which was further helped by the place that still allowed the Spiritual Body of Alex to survive despite the lack of body. Alex was luckier that his Spiritual body was complete.
"Hello, can you answer me. Where am I" Pleaded Alex.
All he was met with silence.
