Chapter 1 - The Ultimate Career Change

The fluorescent lights of the convenience store hummed with a frequency that felt like it was drilling directly into my skull. I stared at the "Help Wanted" sign taped to the glass door, my own reflection staring back with dark circles under its eyes and a resume that was essentially a work of fiction at this point.

"Twenty years old," I muttered, adjusting my worn-out jacket. "Adam, the man with a plan. And that plan is currently 'don't starve before Tuesday.'"

Being unemployed wasn't just about the lack of a paycheck; it was the crushing weight of the void. Every day was a cycle of refreshing job boards, getting ghosted by entry-level positions that required five years of experience, and eating ramen that tasted increasingly like cardboard. I stepped out into the humid evening air, the smell of exhaust and rain-slicked asphalt filling my lungs.

I needed a win. Just one.

I was halfway across the intersection, my mind drifting toward whether I could stretch my last five dollars into a three-day meal plan, when the world turned white. There was no cinematic slow-motion, no dramatic orchestral swell. There was only the sudden, violent screech of air-brakes and the blinding glare of high-beams.

THUD.

The last thing I felt wasn't pain—it was a strange, floaty sense of indignation. Really? A truck? That's so cliché, I thought. Then, the darkness took me.

I woke up to the sound of a lute.

It wasn't the digital tinny sound of a ringtone, but a rich, acoustic melody that seemed to vibrate in the very air. My eyes snapped open, expecting the sterile white of a hospital ceiling or perhaps the pearly gates. Instead, I was staring at a sky so blue it looked painted, dotted with clouds that moved with suspicious uniformity.

I sat up, my hand immediately flying to my chest. No broken ribs. No blood. In fact, I felt better than I had in years. My chronic back ache from my shitty apartment mattress was gone.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZED]

[WELCOME TO GIELINOR, ADAM]

A translucent blue box hovered in my field of vision. I swiped at it, but my hand passed right through.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," I whispered.

[Name: Adam]

[Combat Level: 3]

[Status: Unemployed (Wait, checking... Status: Adventurer)]

"Even the afterlife is roasting my career choices," I groaned, standing up. I was dressed in a simple brown tunic and trousers that looked like they belonged in a Renaissance fair. I looked around and realized I was standing in the middle of a bustling courtyard.

Massive stone walls rose up around me, and in the center sat a magnificent fountain. But it wasn't the architecture that caught my eye—it was the people. Above every single person's head was a floating bit of text.

Level 12. Level 54. Level 126 (Stay away from that one).

I felt a tap on my shoulder. I spun around and nearly fell back into the fountain. Standing there was a woman with vibrant red hair tied back in a practical ponytail, wearing light leather armor that looked far too expensive for my current tax bracket.

"You look like you just dropped out of the sky, Newbie," she said, her lips curling into a smirk. "First time in Lumbridge?"

"I... uh..." I blinked. Above her head, it read: [Elena - Level 42 - Slayer Apprentice].

"Cat got your tongue? Or did the teleportation spell scramble your brains?" She laughed, and it was a bright, genuine sound. "I'm Elena. You look like you're staring at your System for the first time.

Need a hand, or are you planning on courting that fountain all day?"

"I'm Adam," I said, finally finding my voice. "And yeah. I think I'm a bit lost. Where exactly am I?"

"The heart of the kingdom, darling," she said, gesturing to the sprawling castle behind us. "Check your Quest List. The Duke is always looking for someone to run errands, though usually, it involves sheer wool or a lost cook. It's not glamorous, but it beats being a level three pacifist."

I focused on the air in front of me, and a new tab shimmered into existence.

[QUEST LIST]

Cook's Assistant: The Duke's chef is in a panic. Requirements: Flour, Milk, Egg.

Sheep Shearer: Fred needs wool. He doesn't care how you get it.

Restless Ghost: Father Aereck hears bumps in the night.

"This is... it's like a game," I murmured.

"Life is a game, Adam. Some of us just have better stats than others," Elena said, stepping closer. She smelled like rosemary and sharpened steel. She reached out and tapped the floating icon near my shoulder. "You've got a Monster Diary entry unlocked too. Just don't go poking the cows in the north field yet. They kick harder than you'd think."

I looked at her, really looked at her. Her eyes were a sharp, intelligent hazel, and there was a wit there that felt dangerously contagious. For the first time in months, I wasn't thinking about rent or resumes. I was thinking about how to get an egg.

"So, Elena," I said, leaning back against the stone rim of the fountain, trying to look significantly cooler than a man who had died via truck twenty minutes ago. "How does a Level 3 Adventurer convince a Level 42 Slayer Apprentice to show him the ropes?"

She arched a perfectly groomed eyebrow.

"Bold. I like bold. Tell you what, Adam. Go fetch the ingredients for the Cook. If you can handle a bag of flour without sneezing yourself to death, maybe I'll show you where the goblins hide their stash."

She turned to leave, but paused, looking back over her shoulder. "And Adam? Welcome to Runescape. Try not to die. It's a real pain to get your gear back."

As she walked away, her armor clinking softly, I felt a strange surge of adrenaline. I pulled up my [SKILLS] tab.

Attack: 1

Strength: 1

Defense: 1

Cooking: 1

"Alright," I said, cracking my knuckles. "Let's go find a cow."

I didn't have a job, a home, or a clue. But I had a System, a beautiful girl who didn't think I was a loser (yet), and a world that actually seemed to want me in it.

The journey had officially begun.
