Episode 5: The New Rules
Ju‑hyuk arrived in four minutes, still in his work clothes, a tablet under his arm. He took one look at her face and said, "Tell me everything."
She told him about the dream, the counter's return, the new deal.
"Observation," he repeated. "No interference."
"That's what she said."
He sat on her couch, pulling up something on his tablet. "Then we treat this like any other corporate restructuring. The terms have changed, but the goal remains the same."
"What goal?"
"You living your life." He looked up. "They want to watch? Let them watch. But you control the narrative. You decide what's interesting."
She sat beside him. "How?"
"By doing the things you were too scared to do before." He handed her the tablet. "I made a list."
She looked at the screen. It was a new bucket list, longer than the first one, filled with things that made her stomach flip:
1. Go back to Daehan Corporation and finish the welfare program—on your own terms.
2. Help Seo‑kyung record her first album.
3. Learn to dance without a partner.
4. Travel somewhere you've never been. Alone.
5. Tell Kang Ju‑hyuk how you really feel.
Her eyes stopped on the last one. "You put yourself on the list."
"I'm not a coward." He didn't look away. "Are you?"
She stared at him. The grey OBSERVING counter flickered in the corner of her vision, but she ignored it.
"No," she said. "I'm not."
She leaned in and kissed him.
It was awkward at first—her nose bumped his cheek, his hand came up too fast and knocked over her coffee cup on the side table. But then his hand settled on her waist, and her fingers found the back of his neck, and the awkwardness melted into something warm and real.
When they broke apart, the counter had changed: OBSERVING was still there, but it had turned from grey to gold.
Ju‑hyuk looked at her with an expression she had never seen before—open, vulnerable, completely unguarded.
"Was that on the list?" she asked.
"It was the most important item."
She smiled. "Then I guess we check it off."
