Chapter 17 - Episode 17: The Silence After She Was Taken

The alley didn't feel real anymore.

It felt like a place that had swallowed her life in one breath.

Meera stood still.

Even when the footsteps disappeared.

Even when the voices faded.

Even when the street became empty again.

She didn't move.

Because if she moved…

it would mean Rani was gone.

And she wasn't ready to accept that.

Minutes passed.

Or maybe hours.

Time stopped behaving normally.

Meera finally dropped to her knees.

Not dramatically.

Just… collapsing under something invisible.

Her breath broke.

Then her voice.

"Rani…"

No answer.

She tried again.

"Rani…"

Still nothing.

And that silence…

hurt more than anything she had ever felt.

Back at the hideout checkpoint—

no one came back.

No updates.

No confirmation.

Only disappearance.

Meera returned alone.

Covered in dust.

Eyes empty.

People looked at her.

But no one spoke.

Because everyone understood:

Something had been lost.

The coordinator approached carefully.

"What happened?"

Meera stared at him.

Then said slowly:

"They took her."

A pause.

"Just like that."

The room went still.

Someone whispered:

"Was she identified?"

Meera shook her head slightly.

"I don't know…"

A pause.

"But she looked like they were waiting for her specifically."

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Because it meant this wasn't random.

It was planned.

That night, Meera didn't sleep.

She sat in a corner of the new safe location.

Staring at nothing.

Her phone lay in her hand.

No messages.

No signals.

Just a device pretending to connect her to a world that had already abandoned her.

Rani's last words echoed in her mind.

"Find me."

Meera whispered into the empty room:

"How?"

Silence answered.

Hours passed.

Then morning.

Then noise.

But Meera didn't move.

Until someone placed a bottle of water beside her.

She looked up slowly.

A boy stood there.

Maybe 18–20.

Quiet eyes.

Careful voice.

"You should drink something."

Meera didn't respond.

He sat down a little distance away.

"I saw what happened last night."

Meera finally spoke.

"You saw nothing."

He shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"I saw everything change."

Meera looked at him sharply.

"You don't know anything."

He nodded.

"You're right."

A pause.

"But I know where they take people like her."

That sentence hit like electricity.

Meera stood instantly.

"What did you say?"

He looked at her calmly.

"There are places they don't put on maps."

A pause.

"And people don't come back from most of them."

Meera's voice shook.

"Why are you telling me this?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Because I think you still have a choice."

Silence.

Meera whispered:

"What choice?"

The boy stood up slowly.

"Whether you stay broken…"

A pause.

"Or start breaking what took her."

That word stayed.

Breaking.

Not survival anymore.

Not escape.

Something sharper.

Meera looked down at her hands.

They were still shaking.

But not empty anymore.

Because now…

there was direction inside the pain.

She finally asked:

"If I go after her… I won't survive it, will I?"

The boy didn't lie.

"No."

A pause.

"But neither will they if enough people stop being afraid."

Silence.

Something shifted inside her again.

Not healing.

Not peace.

But ignition.

Meera closed her eyes.

And for the first time since Rani was taken…

she didn't cry.

She whispered:

"Tell me everything."
