The sunlight barely filtered through the towering structure, but inside the wall arena, it didn't matter. Evan Solace stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest. Beside him, Sera Vale and Leon Archlight moved cautiously, eyes fixed on the black, shimmering surface of the wall that loomed ahead.
"This is it," Evan muttered under his breath, trying to steady his nerves. "The first step to becoming stronger… and finding answers."
The wall was unlike anything they had ever seen. Its surface shifted subtly, reflecting shadows and light in strange, almost hypnotic patterns. Whispers ran through the students gathered around, speculating and questioning in hushed tones.
Finally, a sharp voice cut through the murmur.
"Silence!"
All eyes turned to the instructor who had appeared seemingly from nowhere. Her presence was commanding, and her gaze swept across every student in the arena.
"You are gathered here for the mental trial," she announced, her voice echoing off the black wall. "This is not your awakening test yet. Only those who pass this trial will be allowed to enter the wall and face the trials that may lead to awakening. Your mental strength will be tested. Your fears, your doubts, your determination… all will be measured."
Evan swallowed hard. The weight of her words pressed on him, but he stepped closer, resolute.
One by one, the students entered the wall. The moment Evan stepped inside, a wave of distortion hit him. The world around him warped; familiar faces blurred, echoes of memories twisted, and for a moment, he felt completely alone. Then, a memory surfaced—fragments of his father, lost to him for years. A fleeting sense of fear, worry, and longing wrapped around him like chains.
But Evan clenched his fists, grounding himself. "I… I have to move forward," he whispered. Every step forward felt like pushing through thick water, but his determination and emotional resilience kept him going. He faced the illusions, struggled, fell, but never gave up. Slowly, the distorted memories began to fade, and Evan emerged from the wall, sweat on his brow and heart racing.
Blinking, he saw Sera and Leon beside him, their expressions mirroring relief and pride.
"I'm… glad we all made it," Evan said, exhaling. "Thank God we're still together."
Leon grinned. "We did it. Three of us passed the trial. Now we just need two more for our group."
Before they could search far, two students approached them.
The first was Ryn Kael, tall and lean, with sharp, calculating eyes and short dark hair. The second, Mira Vey, was petite and athletic, her bright, determined eyes fixed on Evan's group.
"Can we join your group?" Ryn asked politely.
Evan nodded. "Of course." The Group of Five was complete.
Once the group was formed, the instructor returned, her steps firm and confident. "My name is Instructor Lyra Veylen, and I will be responsible for guiding you through this arena. You have passed the mental trial, but this is only the beginning. Now, you will learn about the walls, the ranking system, and the power symbols. Only those who awaken will receive their symbols and proceed further. You must undergo multiple tests to awaken, and your abilities, determination, and resilience will decide your future. Pay attention, for these rules will shape everything you do from here on."
She raised her hand, and a glowing diagram appeared in the air, showing symbols and levels.
"The ranking system works like this: every awakened individual is assigned a rank based on their abilities, strength, and mastery of their power. The ranks are E, D, C, B, A, and S—with S-rank being the highest. Only those who awaken and prove their capability through these tests will receive a symbol representing their rank and power state. Keep in mind: awakening is not guaranteed, even if you pass this first mental trial. Each test is designed to push you further, and only the strongest—mentally, physically, and emotionally—will continue to advance. Those who fail must return and wait for another chance."
Her explanation left the students in awe. The walls, the rankings, the powers—they were stepping into a world far more dangerous and structured than they had imagined.
Evan's pulse quickened. This was the beginning, the first test of awakening, and the real challenges were just ahead. He looked at his group, feeling both anxiety and determination, knowing that their journey had truly begun.
