The forest clearing was eerily quiet, the morning mist curling between the trees like silent fingers. The instructor stepped forward, her eyes scanning the rows of students. Her voice cut through the tension.
"This trial will test not only your strength but your minds, your instincts, and your ability to survive together. You will face goblins—creatures that may seem small, but underestimate them at your peril. Weapons will be provided, but remember: chaos is inevitable. Only those who can think under pressure and work together will succeed. This is your first step toward awakening."
The students exchanged uneasy glances. A low murmur ran through the crowd. Sera gripped her spear tightly, knuckles white. "I… I've never seen anything like this," she whispered to Leon, her voice shaking slightly.
Leon exhaled slowly, trying to calm himself. "We just have to survive. Stick together. That's all we can do."
Evan's eyes swept across the students around him. He could see fear in almost every face. But he also saw something else—hesitation, doubt, and the faint glimmer of determination. "Listen," he said softly, stepping closer to his friends. "We survive as one. We don't run. We don't panic. We fight smart, and we fight together. Can you do that?"
Sera nodded firmly, her eyes meeting his. "Yes. We can." Leon gave a small, determined nod.
The instructor signaled the start of the trial. Groups of five were quickly formed, and the students moved cautiously into the dense forest. At first, the path seemed deceptively calm. Then, from the shadows, a scratching sound echoed—soft at first, then louder, more deliberate.
"They're coming…" whispered one student, fear lacing their voice.
From the darkness, the goblins emerged. Small but fierce, with mottled green skin, glowing yellow eyes, jagged teeth, and claws that scraped against rocks and roots. Some carried crude weapons; others had nothing but their gnarled hands. They hissed, snatching at anything in reach.
Evan's stomach tightened, but he forced himself to stay calm. "Keep your distance. Don't panic. Remember, stay together!"
The first attack was chaos incarnate. Spears swung, arrows flew, and the shrieks of goblins mingled with the terrified cries of students. Several of Evan's peers were struck down instantly. One boy tripped and fell as a goblin lunged, another screamed as an arrow barely missed him. Fear and panic rippled through the group.
"They're… they're too fast!" shouted a girl, eyes wide with terror.
"We have to regroup!" Evan barked, grabbing Sera's arm. "Five per team isn't enough. We need bigger groups. Cover each other. Move!"
The surviving students quickly gathered into larger clusters, ten to twelve members strong. The larger groups gave them more protection, but new problems arose—arguments over leadership, disputes about strategy, and tension over who would make decisions in the heat of battle.
"We should follow the strongest!" one boy shouted, glaring at another.
"No! We should elect a leader, someone calm and smart, not just strong!" another replied.
The arguments threatened to fracture their fragile unity, until Sera raised her voice above the chaos. "Enough! We cannot fight like this. One leader, one plan, or we'll be destroyed!" Her tone left no room for debate. Slowly, the students agreed, choosing a decisive, calm member to take command.
With leadership established, their attacks became more coordinated. Spears thrust in unison, arrows flew in well-timed volleys, and the goblins began to fall more efficiently. Yet, the toll was evident—students stumbled, bloodied and exhausted, some barely keeping their balance.
Then the forest trembled. A deep, bone-rattling roar echoed through the trees. The ground quaked with each step. Emerging from the shadows was a giant goblin. Towering twice the height of a man, its skin a pale, mottled gray stretched over corded muscles. Eyes burned crimson, teeth jagged and glinting like knives. In one massive hand, it gripped a club the size of a small tree.
The students froze, horror etched on every face. "It's… enormous," Sera gasped, her voice trembling. Leon swallowed hard, staring wide-eyed at the creature.
Evan clenched his fists. "Stay calm. We can do this," he muttered, though his heart pounded fiercely in his chest.
The giant goblin charged, swinging its club with terrifying force. Spears and arrows bounced off its thick hide. Every coordinated strike from the group barely fazed it. Panic spread once more, students scattered, some pushed back, others knocked to the ground.
"We… we can't beat it like this!" Sera shouted, backing away.
"It's too strong… what do we do?" Leon stammered, fear in his eyes.
Evan's mind raced. He observed the creature carefully, noting its movements, its slight pause after each swing, the way it shifted its weight. Then a spark of clarity hit him. "Wait… I've got an idea!" he whispered, eyes narrowing with determination.
The students turned toward him, hope flickering in their fear-filled faces. The goblin raised its massive club again, oblivious to the plan forming in the mind of the boy who had refused to strike any goblin himself until now.
The forest seemed to hold its breath, the air thick with anticipation. And in that moment, the chapter ended—Evan poised to act, the giant goblin still looming, the outcome uncertain, the tension unbearable.
