"Her temperature and pulse are within normal limits. The uterus is firm, and the fundus has continued to descend normally since yesterday" Vera reported to doctor Fares as he started pressing on the mother's fundus
"Any abnormalities in her lochia?" He asked as he reached out for Vera's notes.
"Nothing unusual," Vera replied briefly.
As Dr Fares scrolled through the notebook, he finally began to notice the change in Vera's written chart.
"You are doing great with your notes, even if it is no big change, it has indeed become more precise " even if Dr Fares generously complimented her, Vera simply shifted to Joan.
"It's Joan here who taught me, Just like she taught her previous senior Edith from the general care, actually I have been wanting to suggest to the head nurse about switching to chart writing this way"
Vera said, pointing to Joan besides her.
"Arent you a trainee nurse? From where did you learn how to write different charts?" Asked Dr Fares as he handed the notes to the attendant behind him.
"I received practical training back home, though I never completed my formal certification. It's not a big deal, I just felt the doctors would like precise information when reporting for a decisive decision" Joan simply shifted it to an inspiration due to experience in a different environment.
"Well, make sure to mention my name when you hand the notes to the head nurse" He said as the attendant handed the notes back.
–Fortunately, the infant was also fine.
"Why do we have to change the whole chart because of her? She's barely been here a few months. What does she even know?"
Joan heard a hushed questioning as she exited the postpartum ward, as she turned slightly, she noted the speaker as a nurse in her late teens talking with Sophia.
–Isn't she that relative of the senior head nurse? Apparently, her name was Serene.
She heard about her from Helen. Nothing bad, just passing information when talking about work relations.
Joan ignored them, and continued to the utility room. She didn't mind as it truly made their work easier, they would eventually accept it.
With this familiar pace, the days come and go, quietly yet full of the quiet bustle of creating a new life. Shortly, it was the day of Mrs Lawson's discharge, thankfully, no complications happened and both the mother and daughter were healthy.
Except for the gradual changes to the ward's charts and becoming more familiar with the nurses and doctors, the following days passed quietly.
During her spare moments, Joan began jotting down small observations in her notebook. Some were simple reminders, while others concerned practices she found questionable, particularly those related to sterilization. Rather than assuming she knew better, she marked them with question marks, intending to discuss them with experienced doctors and senior nurses whenever the opportunity arose.
As the pages slowly filled, an idea began to take shape. Perhaps one day, after witnessing enough deliveries and learning from enough successes and failures, these scattered notes could become a practical handbook for young maternity nurses. But for now, they were nothing more than rough observations from someone who still had much to learn.
Surprisingly or not, Serene, which was previously mentioned, was transferred to be under Vera's care, starting the day before. Apparently, her former senior couldn't restrain her enough, so she asked her acquaintances to help persuade Serene relative, the head nurse, to transfer her to Vera.
Of course, Vera herself has some complaints about unthankable responsibility, although she can only express it with a helpless sigh, before guiding her new trainee.
