Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: Lily's pregnancy

"Serene, didn't you hear me? Joan has already changed the sheets. I only asked you to sterilize the instruments so we could head to the outpatient clinic," Vera said, already growing tired of Serene's stubbornness.

Despite Serene's obvious attempts to provoke her, Joan chose to ignore them. She had long learned that most petty conflicts faded on their own, while others changed shape as people and circumstances changed. Not every disagreement deserved an answer.

With the quiet cycle of day and night, Joan who is occupied in her semi enclosed environment and routine schedule, has been in this world for almost half a year. Even the repetitive days inside the maternity ward never felt entirely empty. There was a quiet comfort in routine that she had gradually learned to appreciate.

Even during these peaceful weeks, Joan never allowed herself to grow complacent, remaining mentally prepared for the day a difficult delivery would arrive. Constantly training your mind to be ready to respond to dangerous operations is a foregone memento for medical staff.

As Saturday's lunch drew closer, the head nurse, Mrs Cassidy, made her routine visit around the maternity ward.

Until she arrived before Vera's section, which was occupied with two women.

As in the past couple of days, the maternity ward unusually got double the patients of what they usually receive.

"How is it going so far?" Mrs Cassidy asked as she took Vera's notes.

"Nothing unusual, They're both doing well. Although one of them is having her first delivery, we just need to be careful" Vera answered, pointing with her eyes at the woman on bed number twelve.

"Very well, how are your trainees doing?" Although she asked about both Joan and Seren, Vera and Joan knew she wanted to know about her niece.

"They both are learning relatively fast, They are both learning quickly. They simply need experience" Vera answered briefly.

That answer comforted the middle aged head nurse, that at least her troublesome niece wasn't a complete disaster yet. This will at least calm her protective sister in law a little.

After throwing a glance at the childish

Serene and greeting Joan, she continued her round.

"She didn't make things difficult for you, did she?" Asked Lucie who was the newest member who joined the hospital.

"Why would she? Just for her niece? Do you think all the people who managed to get a senior position are idiots?" Helen answered her

"Don't worry about Joan, even for saving face she will not make things difficult for a trainee nurse just because her niece doesn't like her " Jinen interjected after swallowing a bite of her bread.

"I don't think we should worry too much, Mrs Cassidy seemed professional, and fair enough" Joan reassured before changing the subject

"By the way, Helen, how is Lily doing? Did she have any extreme pregnancy symptoms yet… like wanting to eat sour or sweet things?"

As much as it was expected, Lily announced her pregnancy two weeks ago, after safely passing the most uncertain early weeks of pregnancy.

"She is fine for now, thankfully, she doesn't have any specific symptoms,

By the way, why don't you visit her sometime, she missed you "

"Sure, should we set a date to check on her together or go to groups of two-three?"

"I don't know if I would be able to switch a day off, so I would like to pass by on my day off " Elise

"Same here" Jinen

"I think she's fine with this arrangement, as long as we don't stay much" Helen answered their contemplation.
