Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3: SYSTEM FAILURE

The plane was falling.

Not sharply.

Not like in movies.

But enough.

Enough for everyone to feel it.

Ethan's stomach twisted as the aircraft dipped again, the pressure pulling him down into his seat.

Gasps turned into screams.

"WHAT'S GOING ON?!"

"ARE WE CRASHING?!"

"OH MY GOD—"

"Stay seated!" a flight attendant shouted, her voice shaking.

She held onto a seat, struggling to stay balanced.

The plane jerked violently.

Ethan gripped the armrest so hard his knuckles turned white.

Beside him, Daniel had completely frozen.

"This isn't turbulence," Daniel whispered.

No.

It wasn't.

The lights flickered again.

On.

Off.

On.

Then—

Darkness.

Total darkness.

For a second, no one spoke.

No one moved.

Then chaos exploded.

Screams.

Crying.

Prayers.

"TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON!"

"WHAT'S HAPPENING?!"

Emergency lights flickered on faintly, casting a dim red glow across the cabin.

Faces looked different in that light.

Pale.

Terrified.

Unrecognizable.

Ethan swallowed hard.

His heartbeat slammed in his ears.

The plane shook again.

Harder.

A loud metallic CLANG echoed from somewhere deep within the aircraft.

People screamed louder.

"What was that?!" Daniel said, panic breaking through his voice.

"I don't know," Ethan replied.

But he did know one thing—

That sound was not normal.

✈️ Cockpit

"Control, this is NX-417, do you copy?"

Captain Reynolds' voice was sharp, controlled—but strained.

Static answered him.

Nothing else.

First Officer Miles adjusted the radio again.

"Try the backup frequency."

Reynolds switched channels.

"NX-417 requesting immediate response. We are experiencing severe system failure."

Static.

Miles swore under his breath.

"No signal."

"That's not possible," Reynolds snapped.

"We should be within range."

Miles checked the instruments.

His face went pale.

"Captain… we've lost navigation."

Reynolds froze for half a second.

"…What?"

"GPS is down."

"Inertial system isn't responding."

"We don't have our position."

"That's impossible," Reynolds said again.

But his voice had changed now.

He looked at the main display.

Blank.

No coordinates.

No path.

No guidance.

Just empty data.

"What about altitude?" he asked.

Miles hesitated.

"…Unstable."

The numbers flickered.

Rising.

Dropping.

Glitching.

"Speed?"

"Also fluctuating."

Reynolds tightened his grip on the controls.

"This doesn't make sense," he muttered.

Then—

A loud alarm blared.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

"Warning—flight control system malfunction."

Miles' hands moved quickly across the panel.

"Trying manual override—"

Nothing happened.

"It's not responding!"

The plane jolted violently.

Reynolds steadied the controls with force.

"Keep trying!"

✈️ Cabin

The aircraft tilted suddenly.

A sharp angle.

Passengers screamed as the plane leaned to one side.

Luggage shifted in the overhead bins.

Something fell.

Ethan braced himself against the seat.

"Oh God—oh God—oh God—" someone repeated behind him.

Daniel grabbed the armrest.

"We're going down—"

"No," Ethan said quickly.

"We're not."

But even he wasn't sure.

The plane shook again.

Relentless.

The red emergency lights flickered.

A child cried loudly.

A woman started praying out loud.

"PLEASE, JUST MAKE IT STOP!"

The engines roared unevenly again.

Louder now.

Strained.

Ethan's chest tightened.

Something was failing.

Something important.

✈️ Cockpit

"Engine two is fluctuating!" Miles shouted.

Reynolds cursed.

"Stabilize it!"

"I'm trying!"

The engine readings spiked wildly.

Too high.

Too low.

Too fast.

"Fuel system's not responding correctly," Miles said.

Another alarm blared.

"Hydraulic pressure dropping."

Reynolds' jaw tightened.

"We're losing control," he said quietly.

Miles didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

✈️ Cabin

The plane dropped again.

Harder than before.

Ethan's stomach lurched violently.

Screams erupted everywhere.

People were crying openly now.

A man stood up suddenly.

"I need to get out of here!"

"Sit down!" a flight attendant yelled.

The man ignored her.

The plane jerked violently—

He was thrown back into his seat.

More screams.

"EVERYONE STAY SEATED!" the attendant shouted again.

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

This wasn't just fear anymore.

This was survival.

He looked out the window.

Still nothing.

No ground.

No lights.

No stars.

Just darkness.

Endless darkness.

✈️ Cockpit

"We need to declare emergency," Miles said.

Reynolds nodded immediately.

"Do it."

Miles grabbed the radio again.

"MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY—this is flight NX-417. We are experiencing total system failure. Requesting immediate assistance—"

Static.

Nothing.

"…No response," Miles said.

Reynolds stared ahead.

For the first time—

There was fear in his eyes.

✈️ Cabin

The plane shook violently again.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

He could feel it now.

The instability.

The lack of control.

This wasn't a normal failure.

This was something worse.

Much worse.

The lights flickered again—

Then went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Screams filled the void.

Then—

Emergency lights flickered back on.

Dim.

Red.

Unstable.

Ethan's heart pounded.

Daniel leaned closer.

"…If we make it out of this…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Because neither of them knew how it would end.

✈️ Cockpit

"Altitude dropping!" Miles shouted.

Reynolds pulled back hard on the controls.

"Come on… come on…"

The plane resisted.

Then responded—

Barely.

"Stabilizing… slightly…" Miles said.

Reynolds exhaled sharply.

"We need somewhere to land," he said.

"But we don't even know where we are," Miles replied.

Silence.

That was the worst part.

✈️ Cabin

The shaking slowed.

Just slightly.

Enough for people to notice.

"…Is it stopping?" someone whispered.

Ethan didn't answer.

Because he knew—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

✈️ Cockpit

Reynolds stared at the dark horizon ahead.

Then—

Something appeared.

Faint.

Very faint.

"…What is that?" he said.

Miles leaned forward.

A light.

Far ahead.

Single.

Unmoving.

"…That might be ground," Miles said.

Reynolds narrowed his eyes.

Or something else.

✈️ Cabin

Ethan looked out the window again.

And for the first time—

He saw it.

A light.

Far below.

Faint.

But real.

Hope.

Or something pretending to be.
