Chapter 6 - ✦ Chapter 6: The Man Who Didn’t Ask Permission

The air inside the Vex mansion had changed.

Not loudly.

Not in a way everyone could name.

But those who understood power—real power—felt it instantly.

Ravien Ashford didn't belong to rooms like this.

He dominated them.

Lucian Vex straightened slightly, his hand still resting over Aveline's, his posture calm but guarded. His sharp gaze locked onto Ravien as he approached.

"Mr. Ashford," Lucian greeted, his tone smooth, measured. "I don't recall extending an invitation."

A faint smirk touched Ravien's lips as he stopped a few steps away.

"You didn't," he replied calmly.

A pause.

Then, colder—

"I didn't need one."

The tension between them wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

It was the kind that sat beneath words… heavy, dangerous, waiting.

Aveline stood between them—silent, still—but far from unaffected.

Her heart was beating faster now.

Not because she was afraid.

But because something about this moment felt… important.

Like she was standing at the center of something she didn't yet understand.

Lucian's fingers tightened slightly around hers.

Subtle.

Possessive.

A reminder.

"She's not part of your world, Ashford," Lucian said quietly, his voice dipping just enough to turn sharp. "Stay in your lane."

Ravien's gaze didn't leave Aveline.

Not even for a second.

And that—

That was deliberate.

"I don't believe in lanes," Ravien replied.

Then slowly—

His eyes shifted to Lucian.

Cold.

Precise.

Unimpressed.

"And I definitely don't follow rules made by men who think proximity equals ownership."

Aveline's breath caught.

The words weren't loud.

But they carried something heavy.

Something dangerous.

Lucian stepped forward slightly now, placing himself just a fraction closer to her.

"This isn't a game," he said, his tone tightening. "She's my fiancée."

For the first time—

Ravien's gaze moved fully to Lucian.

And something in his eyes changed.

Not anger.

Not yet.

But something darker.

Something controlled.

"Is she?" he asked quietly.

The question hung in the air.

Not directed at Lucian.

But at her.

Aveline felt it instantly.

That shift.

That pull.

His attention on her—fully now—like the rest of the room didn't exist.

Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out.

Because for the first time—

She wasn't sure what the answer was.

Lucian noticed.

And that—

That was the first crack.
