Chapter 4 - First Risk

Ren stood outside the electronics store longer than he intended.

The glass reflected the city lights behind him, faintly overlaying his own figure onto the display. For a brief moment, he caught his reflection—still the same posture, same expression, same slightly hesitant gaze.

Nothing about him had changed.

And yet, everything felt different.

Inside, customers moved casually between displays, testing devices, comparing prices, making decisions without much visible struggle. A staff member spoke confidently to a couple near the counter, explaining features as if the price tags attached to each item carried no real weight.

Ren watched them quietly.

He had stood like this before—outside stores, looking in, imagining what it would feel like to walk in and simply choose something without calculating every consequence.

Back then, it always ended the same way.

He would turn around and leave.

"…It's just one purchase."

He muttered under his breath, more to organize his thoughts than to convince himself.

His hand slipped into his pocket, fingers brushing against his phone. The earlier message lingered in his mind.

[Alternative Option Available]

[Higher Outcome Probability Detected]

It hadn't explained anything.

But it didn't feel random.

Ren exhaled slowly, then stepped forward.

The automatic doors slid open.

Warm light greeted him, along with the faint hum of electronics and quiet conversation. The environment felt clean, controlled—almost too polished, like everything inside was designed to guide decisions without making it obvious.

Ren walked in.

His steps were steady, but his attention was sharp, scanning everything more carefully than usual. Prices, brands, layouts—his mind absorbed it all, not out of habit, but because something about this moment felt important.

He stopped in front of the smartphone display.

The same model he had seen from outside sat there, perfectly aligned with several others. Sleek. Minimal. Designed to look effortless.

The price tag was still there.

¥148,000

Ren reached out and picked it up.

It felt light.

Too light for something that usually carried so much weight in his decisions.

He turned it slightly in his hand, examining it—not just the device, but what it represented.

Normally, this would have taken days.

Research.

Comparisons.

Second-guessing.

Now—

The process felt… shorter.

His phone vibrated again.

Ren didn't look at it immediately.

Instead, he glanced around.

No one was paying attention to him.

The staff were busy.

Other customers were focused on their own choices.

Only then did he pull out his phone.

[Alternative Option Selected]

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Selected?

He hadn't chosen anything.

Before he could process it further, another line appeared.

[Recommended Purchase Confirmed]

Ren stared at the screen, his grip tightening just slightly.

"…What do you mean confirmed?"

His voice was barely audible.

A brief pause followed.

Then—

Nothing.

No explanation.

No further detail.

The message remained on the screen, simple and absolute.

Ren looked back at the phone in his hand.

For a moment, something about the situation felt… off.

Not wrong.

Just—

Too smooth.

Like a decision had been made before he fully made it himself.

He exhaled slowly, forcing his thoughts to settle.

"…I was going to buy it anyway."

He said it quietly, as if reaffirming control over the situation.

And it wasn't entirely false.

He had considered it.

He was standing here.

That was enough, right?

Ren walked toward the counter.

Each step felt deliberate.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

Just… committed.

The staff member greeted him with a polite smile.

"Would you like to purchase that model?"

Ren nodded.

"Yeah."

Simple.

The transaction process began.

The staff explained features, warranty options, small details that Ren only half-listened to. His attention was divided—not on the device, but on what would happen next.

The final amount appeared on the screen.

¥148,000

Ren pulled out his card.

For a brief moment, his hand paused.

Not because of doubt.

But because of awareness.

This was the first real step.

Not a small test.

Not something insignificant.

A decision.

He tapped the card.

Beep.

"Thank you for your purchase."

The words felt normal.

Too normal.

Ren took the bag, stepping aside as the transaction completed without any issue. No delay. No hesitation. No sign that anything unusual had happened.

He walked out of the store.

Only then did he stop.

His phone vibrated.

Slowly, he pulled it out.

Balance: ¥499,998 → ¥499,850

Ren's eyes locked onto the number.

¥148,000 spent.

¥148 deducted.

"…So it scales."

His voice was steady.

But his mind wasn't.

This confirmed it.

The system wasn't random.

It followed rules.

Consistent rules.

Which meant—

It could be used.

Ren lowered his phone slowly, his gaze drifting toward the city around him. The lights looked the same. The people moved the same. Nothing in the world had changed.

But his position in it had.

For the first time—

Spending money didn't feel like losing something.

It felt like unlocking something.

And that realization settled deeper than he expected.

Ren tightened his grip slightly on the bag in his hand, his thoughts no longer scattered, no longer uncertain.

If this was how it worked—

Then there was something far more important than just spending.

Understanding it.

Because whatever this system was—

It wasn't just making things easier.

It was changing the way he made decisions.

And Ren wasn't sure yet—

Whether that was a good thing.
