The group stood transfixed, staring at the clutch of massive snake eggs. A heavy silence hung in the air, only to be broken by their urgent discussion.
"What now? We can't just stand here," Jasper said, his voice a mix of anxiety and determination.
"Maybe we should—," Layla began, but was cut off by Mikael's sudden exclamation.
"Guys, look! That one's hatched! There's a hole at the back!" His finger pointed at one of the eggs, now ominously empty.
A wave of alarm swept through the group, their eyes darting around in search of any immediate threat.
"Great, just what we needed," the bald gangster muttered. "Baby serpents on the loose."
His lackey, still nursing a bruised ego, added, "Like this place wasn't deadly enough."
Layla, with a grim determination, drew her sword and began systematically slashing the eggs. Her face twisted in disgust at each strike, but she persisted, knowing it was a necessary evil.
Mikael sighed, "Hopefully, those two beasts will take each other out."
Tony, his voice laced with disbelief, added, "This is insane. A Rank 0 is supposed to be a walk in the park, not a death match!"
Jasper shook his head, "Should've known something was off with that shady deal."
Xander and Mikael exchanged a knowing glance, their thoughts aligned with Jasper's.
"The boss wouldn't set us up like this," Tony defended Giovanni, but his confidence wavered under the weight of the situation.
"That Giovanni's a snake himself," the bald gangster's lackey sneered, "always looking for a quick buck, no matter the cost."
His words sparked a fiery reaction from Tony, who, in a fit of rage, pistol-whipped the gangster's lackey..
"Stop it, you idiots! You're making too much noise!" Xander tried to intervene, his voice raised in frustration.
Jasper joined in, "Yeah, cut it out, you're gonna attract every creature in this dungeon!"
As they attempted to separate the two, the lackey, still reeling from the blow, suddenly screamed in pain. A large snake, not as massive as the serpent but still daunting, had latched onto him.
"It's from the hatched egg!" Mikael yelled.
The bald gangster immediately ceased his fight with Tony, rushing to his lackey's aid. The rest of the group sprang into action, struggling to free the man from the snake's crushing embrace without injuring him further.
The group sprung into action, trying to pry the snake off without causing further harm. Xander, in a desperate move, activated his electric baton and delivered a small shock to both the snake and the man, causing the serpent to loosen its grip slightly.
Layla and Jasper managed to pin the snake's head down, holding it steady. Mikael aimed his gun carefully and fired two shots directly into the snake's head, ensuring it wouldn't strike again.
As the creature lay lifeless, the group panted heavily, the adrenaline slowly subsiding.
, Xander's body sagged slightly with relief. The tension that had been coiled tightly within him began to unfurl, albeit slowly. That could've been any of us... even me, he thought, a chill running down his spine. The realization of his mortality, the fragility of life in this hellish place, became more tangible with each passing moment. I'm walking on a razor's edge here. One wrong step, one moment of bad luck, and I could end up like Rico or... His thoughts trailed off, not wanting to delve deeper into that dark abyss.
The gangster's lackey struggled to his feet, his leg bleeding profusely from the snake bite, a noticeable limp hampering his movement. Alfred's harsh words cut through the tense air. "Great, another liability. Don't expect me to lend a hand," he sneered, his tone dripping with disdain.
Xander watched as the bald gangster boss, too, turned a blind eye to his injured lackey. Great, another one who'd throw anyone under the bus to save his own skin, Xander mused bitterly. His gaze shifted between Alfred and the gangster boss, a sense of wariness settling in. I need to keep my guard up around these two. Can't trust them as far as I can throw them.
Jasper's voice, laced with exhaustion and disbelief, echoed Xander's thoughts. "What the hell is this dungeon, man..."
Looking around, Xander could see the same sentiment reflected in everyone's expressions. The reality of their situation was grim. They were trapped in an unknown, perilous place, far from the supposed ease of a Rank 0 dungeon they had been promised. Fear, uncertainty, and the weight of survival pressed heavily on Xander's shoulders. "We were supposed to be in and out, no fuss. But here we are, fighting for our lives.."
As they trudged through the water, Xander turned to Tony, seeking some understanding. "Hey, Tony, what's the deal with Rank 0 dungeons? Aren't they supposed to be easy?"
Tony's face was a mask of fear and uncertainty. "It's supposed to be easy! Nothing like this... this—this is a nightmare..." His voice trailed off into a whisper, his eyes fixed on the ground.
Xander pondered Tony's response, his thoughts racing. The only person I can really trust here is Mika. Maybe Layla too, she seems reliable. Jasper's losing hope, and Tony's in a daze... It's because his friends died. He observed the group, sensing the fragility of their makeshift alliance. In this hell, trust is as scarce as safety.
As they continued, the water receded, and they found themselves on solid ground again. Xander whispered to Mikael, "Keep an eye on Alfred in case we run into more trouble. And the bald gangster... he's a wildcard."
Lost in thought soon after as they walked, Xander gazed into the darkness. "You know Mika... after living in despair for a whole month, I was ready to give up. My sister was all I had left. When I came here after losing her, I didn't care what happened to me. But now..." His voice trailed off, a bitter smile touching his lips. "After seeing what we've faced here, I realize I haven't lost the will to live. It's like my body moves on its own to survive. Strange, isn't it? I guess I do want to keep liv-
His words were abruptly cut off by a massive tremor. The ground shook violently, and the rumbling they had felt earlier resumed, approaching fast. "Damn it, it's the Mother snake!" Mikael shouted, panic evident in his voice.
The group bolted into action, their feet pounding against the hard cave floor. "Where the hell are we going?!" Jasper yelled.
"I don't know, just run!" Xander yelled back, his mind whirling with thoughts. The salamander must have lost. But that snake can't be in good shape after a fight like that. He realized the gravity of their situation - a wounded, enraged serpent was still a deadly threat.
As they ran, the path seemed endless, the darkness all-encompassing. Xander's mind raced, trying to formulate a plan, any plan
Xander glanced at his electric baton, noting the two bars of battery left. Abruptly, he stopped running.
"Yo, Z, what are you doing?" Mikael asked, halting with a look of urgency on his face.
"Are you guys insane?! Keep running!" Layla shouted, noticing the two had stopped.
"Wait!!! Everyone, wait a second!" Xander's voice boomed through the tunnel, halting the group in their tracks. The gangster, already on edge, approached Xander angrily.
"What's your problem, kid?!" he snarled, grabbing Xander's collar.
Both Tony and Mikael quickly aimed their guns at the gangster. "Back off, or you'll be the next one to meet a snake," Mikael warned, his voice steady.
"Yeah, let the kid speak," Tony added, his gun unwavering.
"We don't have time for this, guys!" Xander cut through the tension, as he spoke, the gangster's injured lackey caught up, panting heavily. Ignoring him, Xander continued,. "We have to go back, quick!"
The lackey looked at Xander with a bewildered expression through his endless panting.
"See? The kid's lost his damn mind!" the bald gangster retorted, though less aggressively under the guns' gaze.
"Let's hear him out," Layla interjected, her voice calm but firm.
Xander explained his plan. "We don't know where we're running to. We could run into another monster or a dead end. Remember the body of water?"
"Yeah, what about it, kid?" the gangster asked, skepticism clear in his voice.
"Let him finish," Mikael pressed the gun against the gangster's head.
,Xander continued, "That body of water... It's about the length of three large pools, which could fit the snake. It was murky and had a mineral smell, so it should be a strong conductor for electricity."
Another rumble echoed through the cave, closer this time, but Xander spoke over it. "I propose we lead the snake into the water. I have enough battery left to release a heavy voltage, similar to what was used on the bats. We don't have much time! I'll explain more as we go back." The group listened, the rumbling growing louder. "So, who's with me?" Xander finished, his gaze sweeping across their faces.
Xander's heart pounded in his chest as he laid out the plan. "This is crazy, but it's the best shot we have", he thought, his mind racing. He knew the risks were high, but the alternative was running blindly into unknown danger.
Mikael was the first to voice his support for Xander's plan. "I'm in, Z. Lead the way," he said, a determined look in his eyes.
Tony was next. "Ah, what the hell, I'm in too, kid. It's about time I got some revenge for my buddies. Tired of running from these damned monsters."
Layla nodded in agreement. "It makes sense. I think this might actually work."
Jasper chimed in, though his voice wavered slightly, "Don't count me out. I'm ready to smash that snake's face in."
Alfred, after a moment's hesitation, added, "I'm willing to follow along."
However, the bald gangster scoffed at the idea. "This is some bullcrap! I ain't going along with this dumb plan. You think you're some heroes gonna save the day or something?!" His voice was laced with skepticism and disdain.
"All right then, we won't hold you," Xander responded calmly. "Do whatever you'd like." Internally, Xander felt it might be better to part ways with the gangster. It's risky having him around. He's unpredictable. Though we could use all the help we can get, it's probably safer this way, he thought, weighing the pros and cons.
The group started running back towards the body of water where they had destroyed the snake eggs. Along the way, Xander laid out the rest of the plan. "There are small rocky ridges along the wall where I can hang over the water. I'll wait there while you guys wait on the edge of the water where it ends. We'll use those eggs and the dead snake baby as bait. The mother won't be happy about that."
As they neared their destination, the rumbling grew louder. "Let's hurry!" Layla urged.
"On my cue, I want Mika and Tony to open fire at the snake. Try to hit it in the eyes! Jasper and Layla, stand by until after the fireworks to attack." Xander hoped the snake was in bad enough condition for the baton and guns to be effective. "But we can't be too sure. This is going to be a tough fight". he thought, mentally preparing himself for what was to come.
They got into position, the atmosphere tense with anticipation. The silence was broken only by the sound of the giant snake approaching, its thick, rigid scales scraping against the terrain.
We're as ready as we'll ever be. Let's hope this works, Xander thought, gripping his baton tightly…
