Somewhere outside, close to the initiation portal, a certain could be seen driving away..
The weathered La Rossa bus bumped along an undeveloped road, dust billowing in its wake. Painted graffiti announced its affiliation. Inside, two men locked eyes, each soon to be burdened with the decisions they had made.
Donato, the older man with a stern demeanor and a scar trailing down his face, broke the silence first. "Gio, we've reached the end of the line for this portal. It's too unstable for any more initiations."
Giovanni looked shocked. "Ya kiddin' me, Renzo? I thought we had a few more spins in this wheel."
"No, I'm not joking," Lorenzo retorted, maintaining his formal tone. "This place is volatile. It might even jump to a Rank F by tonight."
Giovanni's eyes flared, and he lunged forward, grabbing Lorenzo's collar. "You're tellin' me this now? Three of my guys are in there, plus a couple of newbies! What the hell were ya thinkin', lettin' me send 'em in?"
Lorenzo's gaze never wavered. "Your father has different priorities, Gio. He's more interested in the financial gains from clearing that dungeon than the lives at stake…"
Giovanni slowly released his grip, letting Lorenzo fall back into his seat. He turned his head towards the window, looking in the general direction where they had sent everyone. A single bead of sweat meandered down his forehead. His expression was unreadable—a complex mix of emotions.
The bus carried on, trailing a cloud of dust and a wake of uneasy tension.

Back in the depths of the dungeon, Xander and Jasper charged the salamander. The creature opened its fangless maw, ready to spew more of its lethal acid. Time seemed to slow as Jasper moved into striking distance.
"Watch out!" Xander roared, pushing Jasper aside just in time. The stream of acid shot past Jasper, narrowly missing him. But in the chaos, Xander couldn't fully retract his own hand, and a few droplets splashed onto his skin. Agony erupted instantly, but adrenaline dulled the edges of his pain, allowing him to close in on the creature.
His electric baton buzzed with a charge as he jammed it into the salamander, sending volts surging through its body. The creature spasmed and twitched before falling lifeless. Jasper, eyes ablaze, lunged in and pummeled the creature mercilessly over and over again with his spiked bat.
"It's dead, Jasper. Enough!," Layla urged, pulling him back to reality.
"We haven't found the other one yet," Mikael reminded them, scanning the surroundings.
Rico and Tony covered Vinny's melted face with a piece of cloth, their faces twisted with grief and fury. "That thing will pay," Rico swore, tears cutting through the grime on his face.
"Be vigilant," Mikael warned. "The second one was injured, but that doesn't mean it won't return."
Layla and Mikael moved to attend to the burns that Xander and Cecilia had sustained. Cecilia had lost consciousness, her face twisted in a grimace of agony. "I can't even imagine what she's going through," Layla whispered, looking down at the unconscious woman.
Xander clenched his teeth against the throbbing in his hand. "It's like a relentless burning, searing every nerve ending. And I only got a splash of that stuff. She—she probably won't make it..."
The weight of Xander's words seemed to hang heavy in the air. Silence stretched between them, punctuated only by the occasional drip of water from the cave's ceiling.
"We don't know that for sure," Mikael broke in, shifting the atmosphere. "If we can make it out of here before the necrosis spreads, Cecilia might still have a chance. Alfred, you don't have any weapons. You should carry her."
Alfred grimaced. "Why should it be me?"
"Because you can't fight, but you can still be useful," Mikael snapped back.
"He's right, Alfred," Tony chimed in. "You've been dead weight so far; it's time to step up."
"Seconded," Layla added curtly.
"Fine," Alfred grumbled, glaring at Cecilia's unconscious form as though she had personally wronged him.
"I think we should rest for a bit," Layla suggested. "Tony, Mikael, would you guys mind keeping watch?"
"Good idea. Mikael and I will keep watch. We've got the guns," Tony volunteered.
Xander glanced at his baton. The battery indicator showed just two bars remaining. A tight knot of concern formed in his stomach.
"How much ammo you got left?" Mikael asked Tony, keeping his voice low.
"Fourteen bullets," Tony replied.
"Nine, on my end," Mikael said.
Rico sat beside Vinny's covered corpse, tears streaming down his face. "Goodbye, my friend. I'll make sure that thing pays."
Meanwhile, Xander, Layla, and Jasper formed a small circle, taking a moment to catch their breaths. Xander checked his baton and frowned; only two battery bars remained.
"So, Layla, what brought you to this hellhole?" Xander asked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
"I'm searching for certain medicinal herbs for my mother. She's severely ill, and normal treatments aren't working. I thought...maybe something in here could help her," Layla's eyes shimmered with an unsettling mix of emotion.
"That's really brave of you," Xander said softly, then exhaled deeply. "I'm here because I'm drowning in debt. Plus, I lost my sister recently. I've got nothing left to lose now, so why not chase my childhood dream of being an explorer? At least…. I know that's what my sister would've wanted."
Layla reached over to squeeze his hand. "Your sister would be proud of you, Xander. You're fighting, and that's what matters."
"Yeah, man," Jasper added. "Living for a dream—that's legit."
"And what about you, Jasper? Why are you here?" Layla asked, intrigued.
"Honestly… I came here… to find love," Jasper shrugged.
Both Xander and Layla exchanged confused glances. But before Jasper could explain his peculiar statement, a chilling scream echoed from the direction they had come from.
The eerie scream reverberated through the air, causing a momentary stillness. Everyone's eyes darted around, searching for the source and the potential danger it signaled.
"What in the world was that?" Jasper whispered, a hint of fear in his eyes.
"Must be those cowardly thugs from before," Tony muttered, clenching his fists.
"We need to investigate. But we stay alert and together," Mikael ordered, looking towards the direction of the sound. The group nodded, forming their previous battle formation. Alfred struggled with Cecilia's weight on his back, grumbling under his breath.
As they proceeded, a second scream pierced the air, quickly followed by another, sharper and filled with pure terror. The unmistakable sound of frantic footfalls reached them, growing louder with each passing second. Along with that was a sinister, slithering sound, sending chills down their spines.
"Something's coming...and fast!" Xander warned, his eyes widening in alarm.
Suddenly, three of the gangsters came into view, their faces contorted with terror, running blindly. Right behind them, a massive serpent slithered at an alarming pace, its eyes fixed on its fleeing prey.
"Run!!!" Tony shouted, panic evident in his voice.
As everyone turned and bolted, Jasper yelled, "Don't You dare look back!"
Alfred, burdened by Cecilia, began to lag. With an angry huff, he growled, "Curse your weight!" and unceremoniously dumped her onto the ground, sprinting to catch up with the group. As one of the gangsters stumbled over Cecilia's fallen form, the serpent lunged, snapping up the lower half of his body in a single, gruesome bite.
A blood-curdling scream echoed, signaling another life taken by the monstrous creature.
The hurried footfalls of the group echoed throughout the dimly lit cavern, the terrifying slithering of the massive serpent not far behind. Each breath they took was filled with a mixture of fear and determination.
"Watch out for the vines up ahead!" Xander huffed, sweat beading down his forehead as he maneuvered his way through.
The remaining gangsters, eyes wide with fear, began to catch up to the group, but their conversation was frenzied and frantic. "Boss, I told ya this was gonna be bad news!" the subordinate gangster wheezed, his voice desperate.
The bald man, tattoos of coiling cobras glinting under the dim light, shot back, "Shut your trap and keep moving you bastard!"
The sight of the familiar resting area came into view, but further ahead, the ground was a twisted maze of thick, spiky vines. The terrain caused everyone to slow their pace, the gaps between their footsteps echoing the panic in their hearts.
"That giant snake's almost on our tails!" Mikael's voice was filled with urgency.
"Go, go, go! Push through!" Rico, with sheer desperation, forced his way through the vines, ignoring the pain as the thorns pierced his legs. His determination fueled the group, but as they tried to follow, they froze.
Rico turned, puzzled by the sudden silence behind him. He saw their faces first. Their eyes were filled with terror, mouths agape, all looking directly above him. Confused and alarmed, Rico followed their gaze upward.
An enormous salamander, its size incomprehensible and beyond any of their wildest nightmares, hung precariously above them from the ceiling of the cavern. With a sudden drop, it opened its vast maw and descended directly onto Rico.
The screams that followed were drowned by the sound of the salamander's jaws snapping shut. "RICO!!" Tony's voice broke through, filled with raw pain and disbelief. The sinister presence of the giant serpent and the massive salamander had them seemingly cornered.
However, the gruesome sight of Rico's melting remains sent a shockwave of horror through the group. Xander, seeing the salamander leap towards them, yelled, "Dodge, NOW!"
They all scattered, narrowly avoiding the lunging beast. Yet, as they dodged, Xander realized the salamander's attack wasn't aimed at them. Its attention was riveted on something else entirely: the giant serpent slithering towards them.
The two colossal creatures clashed with a force that shook the ground beneath their feet. The serpent sank its fangs into the salamander, while the salamander spat its caustic acid onto the serpent's body. The serpent hissed in agony but maintained its deadly grip.
"Guys! Now's our chance, we gotta move! The way the snake came from!" Jasper's urgent call snapped the group back to reality.
The group, including the bald gangster and his sidekick, bolted in the direction the serpent had come from. But Xander noticed Tony, still rooted to the spot, tears streaming down his face. "R-Ricoo... no..." he murmured, lost in grief.
"Snap out of it, Tony! Ya wanna die here?!" Xander shouted, grabbing him by the arm and dragging him until Tony regained his senses and sprinted with the rest.
"Damn monsters, you'll get yours," Tony growled, his voice laced with venom and sorrow.
As they rushed through the tunnels, they stumbled upon a horrifying sight. Cecilia's lifeless body lay discarded, a stark reminder of their grim situation. Everyone, except Alfred, gasped in shock. Alfred's face remained stoic, betraying no emotion.
Behind them, the sounds of the titanic battle echoed through the caverns: the serpent's shrieks and the sizzling of acid.
Meanwhile, the epic confrontation between the snake and the salamander raged on. The serpent, with its immense size and strength, seemed to have the upper hand. However, the salamander's acid proved to be a potent weapon, causing visible damage to the serpent's scales. The battle was fierce, with each creature unleashing its full might in a bid for dominance. The serpent coiled around the salamander, squeezing with immense pressure, but the salamander's acidic spit continued to eat away at its attacker.
Their fight was a spectacle of primal fury, a dance of death where each strike could be the last. But just as one seemed to gain the upper hand, the other would rally, making the outcome uncertain.
The group, however, didn't wait to see who would emerge victorious. Their survival hung in the balance, and the sounds of the monstrous duel faded into the background as they fled deeper into the labyrinthine cave system.
After the harrowing encounter, the group found themselves back at the fork in the path. Gasping for breath, they quickly realized a decision had to be made.
"We can't go back the way we came," Xander said, his voice tense.
"The other path... it's unexplored," Layla pointed out, her voice shaky.
Tony, still reeling from the loss of his friends, glared at the bald gangster and his sidekick. "You two are leading the way," he demanded, his pistol drawn and aimed. The tension in his voice left no room for argument.
"What? No way, man!" the bald gangster protested, his voice tinged with fear.
"You heard him," Mikael backed Tony, his own weapon at the ready.
"I ain't walking into a death trap!" the lackey exclaimed, his voice rising in panic.
Tony's eyes hardened. "Move or join your friends. Your choice." His finger tightened on the trigger.
Reluctantly, the gangsters moved to the front, leading the group down the unexplored path.
"This is where that damn snake came from," the bald gangster muttered. "We're walking straight to our graves."
"Shut up and keep moving," Tony barked, his patience wearing thin.
The path led them deeper into a wet, murky environment that reeked of dampness and decay. They found themselves in a shallow body of water that gradually deepened as they progressed. The cave walls were slick and slimy, with patches of fungi emitting a faint glow, casting eerie shadows.
"Can't believe you just left her," Jasper suddenly said to Alfred, his tone accusatory yet subdued.
Alfred replied coldly, "If I hadn't, we'd both be dead."
Jasper shook his head, still unsettled by the man's nonchalance.
The water soon reached their waists, slowing their progress. The bald gangster paused, his voice a mix of fear and resignation. "This is as far as we got before the snake showed up."
They pushed on, the threat of the serpent looming over them. Suddenly, they stumbled upon a hidden alcove, a clutch of massive, glistening eggs nestled in the corner, halfway submerged in the water. They looked ready to hatch at any moment.
Xander, unable to help himself, quipped dryly, "Great, just what we needed. Nursery duty."
Jasper added, "Maybe they'll be friendlier than their mom?"...
