Chapter 8:
The city streets were busier than usual that afternoon.
Ava walked slowly, her thoughts heavy. 🖊️
Her secret, her family, the pencil… all of it pressed on her chest.
She didn't notice the young man until he almost bumped into her.
"Sorry!" he said quickly.
Ava looked up.
He smiled politely, his eyes sharp and curious.
"I didn't see you there," she replied softly.
He glanced at the papers she was carrying.
"Working on something important?" he asked.
Ava shook her head. "Just… homework."
He extended a hand.
"I'm Ethan," he said. "I just moved to this part of the city."
Ava hesitated, then shook his hand.
"Ava," she said.
As they walked together for a few blocks, Ethan talked easily.
He was friendly but observant, asking about school, the neighborhood, and small things in her life.
Ava felt… cautious.
I can't let him know anything about the pencil, she thought.
She smiled politely, keeping her answers short.
When they reached a small bakery, Ethan offered, "Do you want to grab something to eat? My treat."
Ava glanced down at her empty pockets. She hesitated, then nodded.
They went inside.
Over warm bread and tea, Ava felt… normal. For a moment, the weight on her shoulders lifted.
Ethan laughed at something small she said, and she felt a tiny spark of ease.
But when she returned home that evening, the pencil sat on her desk, silently waiting. 🖊️
Ava held it in her hands, a mix of fear and excitement swelling inside her.
I can't tell anyone. Not even him.
But… maybe I can trust him someday.
For now, she would keep the secret.
And she would continue to use it… carefully.
