Chapter 6 - Don’t Touch What’s Mine

The night did not end when the music stopped.

It only changed shape.

The laughter softened.

The crowd thinned.

But the tension—

Remained.

Elena Carter stood near the edge of the hall, her fingers lightly gripping the stem of a glass she hadn't touched.

The liquid inside reflected the lights above.

Bright.

Elegant.

Deceptive.

Much like everything else in this place.

Victoria's words lingered.

I don't like replacements.

Elena exhaled slowly.

Trying to steady herself.

Trying to remind herself—

This wasn't her world.

It never would be.

"Enjoying yourself?"

The voice was unfamiliar.

Male.

Smooth.

Too smooth.

Elena turned.

A man stood beside her.

Late twenties, maybe early thirties.

Expensive suit.

Easy smile.

The kind of man who knew exactly how charming he was.

"I'm managing," Elena replied.

"That bad?" he asked lightly.

"That obvious?"

He chuckled.

"I've seen worse."

His eyes studied her.

Not as sharp as Adrian's.

But not harmless either.

"Daniel Hayes," he said, extending his hand.

She hesitated for a second.

Then shook it.

"Elena."

"I know."

Of course he did.

Everyone here knew.

"Adrian works fast," Daniel added casually.

Elena tilted her head slightly.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," he said, lowering his voice just enough…

"He doesn't usually bring surprises to events like this."

Surprise.

That's what she was.

Not a wife.

Not a partner.

A surprise.

"And you don't like surprises?" she asked.

Daniel smiled.

"I like interesting ones."

His gaze lingered.

Too long.

Too familiar.

"You should be careful," he added.

That word again.

Careful.

It seemed to follow her everywhere tonight.

"Of what?" she asked.

Daniel's smile didn't fade.

"Of him."

Before she could respond—

A hand closed around her wrist.

Firm.

Unmistakable.

Adrian.

The temperature around her seemed to drop instantly.

"She's not part of your entertainment, Daniel."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came before something worse.

Daniel raised his hands slightly.

Relaxed.

Unbothered.

"I was just talking."

"I'm aware."

Adrian's grip didn't loosen.

If anything—

It tightened.

"Then I don't see the problem."

Adrian's gaze darkened.

"The problem," he said quietly…

"Is that you're still talking."

Silence.

Sharp.

Immediate.

For the first time—

Daniel's smile faded.

Just slightly.

Enough to matter.

"Alright," he said after a moment.

"Message received."

He glanced at Elena one last time.

Then stepped back.

"And here I thought you didn't get possessive."

Possessive.

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Adrian didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

The moment Daniel walked away—

The tension didn't disappear.

It shifted.

Adrian's grip remained.

His eyes turned to her.

And suddenly—

She felt like the one being evaluated again.

"What were you doing?" he asked.

His tone wasn't loud.

But it wasn't soft either.

It was something in between.

Controlled.

Sharp.

"Talking," Elena replied.

Trying to keep her voice steady.

"Like you said people do here."

"That's not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean?"

A pause.

Short.

Tight.

"It means," he said slowly…

"You don't let people like him get close."

Elena frowned slightly.

"And what kind of people is that?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"The kind that take what doesn't belong to them."

Her breath caught.

Because something about the way he said it—

Didn't feel general.

It felt personal.

"And I… belong to you?" she asked.

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

Silence.

For a brief second—

Something shifted in his eyes.

Something she couldn't fully understand.

Then—

"Yes."

The word hit harder than it should have.

Not because it was unexpected.

But because of how easily he said it.

How certain he sounded.

"I'm not an object," she said quietly.

His gaze didn't waver.

"I didn't say you were."

"Then don't talk about me like one."

The air between them tightened.

For a moment—

It felt like she had gone too far.

Like she had crossed a line she didn't understand.

Then—

Something unexpected happened.

Adrian let go of her wrist.

The pressure disappeared.

But the feeling lingered.

"Good," he said.

Elena blinked.

"What?"

"You pushed back."

His tone was different now.

Not softer.

But… less sharp.

"I'm not here to be silent," she replied.

"No," he said.

"You're here to survive."

The words settled.

Heavy.

Real.

"And arguing with me?"

He stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But not distant either.

"Won't help you do that."

Her pulse quickened.

But she didn't step back.

"Then maybe," she said quietly…

"You should stop giving me reasons to."

Silence.

For a second—

Too long of a second—

They just looked at each other.

And then—

Something changed.

Not the tension.

Not the power.

But the space between them.

It felt different now.

Less like control.

More like—

A challenge.

Adrian's gaze dropped briefly.

To her hand.

Her wrist.

Where his fingers had been moments ago.

Then back to her eyes.

"Stay close," he said again.

But this time—

It didn't sound like an order.

It sounded like something else.

Something quieter.

Something… protective.

And that—

That was far more dangerous.

Because for the first time—

Elena Carter didn't just feel trapped.

She felt…

Seen.
