Chapter 7 - Break Her in Public

The night should have ended.

It didn't.

The hall was quieter now.

Less crowded.

More intimate.

Which somehow made everything worse.

Because now—

There were fewer distractions.

Fewer places to hide.

And far more eyes that mattered.

Elena stood beside Adrian, her posture composed, her expression calm.

But inside—

Nothing was calm.

"Something's wrong."

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Adrian didn't look at her.

"What makes you say that?"

She hesitated.

Then—

"I can feel it."

A pause.

"People aren't just watching anymore."

Her fingers tightened slightly around her clutch.

"They're waiting."

This time—

He looked at her.

And for a moment—

There was something in his eyes.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"Good," he said quietly.

Her stomach dropped.

"That's not comforting."

"It's not meant to be."

Before she could respond—

A voice cut through the room.

Loud.

Clear.

Intentional.

"Ladies and gentlemen—"

The entire hall shifted.

Attention turning.

Conversations stopping.

Eyes focusing.

Elena's heart skipped.

Because something about this—

Felt wrong.

At the front of the room—

Victoria stood.

A glass in her hand.

A smile on her lips.

And control in every inch of her posture.

"I hope everyone is enjoying the evening," she continued smoothly.

"Because I thought we might add a little… entertainment."

Adrian's expression hardened instantly.

"Elena," he said quietly.

"Don't react."

Too late.

Because all eyes—

Were already on her.

Victoria's gaze landed directly on Elena.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

Calculated.

"I believe," she said slowly…

"we've all been curious."

A pause.

Then—

"About Adrian Blackwood's new… wife."

The word lingered.

Mocking.

Heavy.

Whispers spread instantly.

Soft.

But loud enough.

Elena's pulse spiked.

But she didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't break.

"After all," Victoria continued…

"She appeared out of nowhere."

Her smile widened.

"And yet—she's standing where many of us…"

A slight pause.

"…have stood before."

The message was clear.

Too clear.

This wasn't just an introduction.

This was an attack.

Adrian stepped forward slightly.

But Elena's hand moved first.

She touched his arm.

Light.

Subtle.

Don't.

He stilled.

Because something in her expression—

Stopped him.

"I think," Victoria said, her voice softening just enough to sound almost kind…

"That it's only fair we get to know her better."

A waiter approached Elena.

Holding a microphone.

The entire room watched.

Waiting.

Expecting.

Judging.

"Elena Carter," Victoria said.

"Why don't you tell us…"

Her eyes glinted.

"…how you managed to marry Adrian Blackwood?"

Silence.

The kind that suffocated.

Elena's mind went blank for a second.

Then—

Everything rushed back at once.

The apartment.

The betrayal.

The hospital.

The contract.

The truth.

And the realization—

That none of it could be said.

Because this world—

Didn't want truth.

It wanted weakness.

And if she gave them that—

She was finished.

Her fingers closed around the microphone.

Slightly trembling.

But not enough for them to see.

She stepped forward.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

But she didn't stop.

Because she understood something now.

This wasn't just about surviving.

This was about proving—

She wouldn't break.

"I married him," she said calmly…

"because I wanted to."

A ripple of whispers.

Victoria tilted her head.

Amused.

"Wanted to?"

Elena nodded slightly.

"Yes."

"Not for money?"

The question was sharp.

Direct.

Designed to cut.

Elena didn't flinch.

"If I married for money," she said softly…

"I would've chosen someone easier."

Silence.

Then—

A shift.

Because that answer—

Wasn't what they expected.

Victoria's smile tightened.

"Interesting," she said.

"But that still doesn't explain…"

Her gaze sharpened.

"…why he chose you."

There it was.

The real question.

The one meant to destroy her.

Elena exhaled slowly.

Then—

She turned.

And looked at Adrian.

Their eyes met.

For a brief second—

Everything else disappeared.

Then—

She smiled.

Small.

Calm.

Certain.

"You should ask him that," she said.

And handed the moment back.

The entire room turned.

Toward him.

Adrian Blackwood.

And for the first time that night—

He moved.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Dangerously.

He stepped forward.

Took the microphone.

His gaze swept across the room.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

And when he spoke—

The room went completely silent.

"I chose her…"

A pause.

Just long enough.

"Because I can."

The words landed.

Heavy.

Final.

No explanation.

No justification.

No apology.

Just power.

Pure.

Undeniable.

"And since we're asking questions," he continued…

His gaze shifted.

Locked onto Victoria.

"I have one."

The air changed.

Instantly.

"Who gave you permission…"

His voice dropped slightly.

Colder.

Sharper.

"…to speak about my wife?"

Silence.

Absolute.

Victoria's expression froze.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Because everyone saw it.

Everyone felt it.

The shift.

The line—

That had just been drawn.

Adrian stepped closer.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

But undeniable.

"Let me make this clear," he said quietly.

The room leaned in.

"Anyone who has a problem with her…"

A pause.

Then—

"Has a problem with me."

The words echoed.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But devastating.

Because coming from him—

They weren't a warning.

They were a threat.

And everyone knew it.

Victoria didn't speak again.

She couldn't.

Because for the first time—

She had lost control.

And Elena—

Elena stood there.

Heart racing.

Breath uneven.

But unbroken.

Because somehow—

She hadn't just survived the attack.

She had turned it.

And standing beside Adrian Blackwood—

For the first time—

She didn't feel like the weakest person in the room.

She felt…

Untouchable.
