The bedroom door was gently pushed open from the outside. The person who entered tiptoed in, using the faint light of the nightstand lamp to make their way to the bedside.
Zoe Rhodes was fast asleep, lying face down on the bed.
The man's eyes narrowed as he studied her exposed face, lost in thought.
'Such a resemblance.'
'The resemblance is uncanny.'
The moment he saw her eyes, he'd felt a flicker of disorientation, a nagging feeling that he had seen this girl somewhere before.
After they left, he'd closed the door and sat in the living room, racking his brain for a long time.
He had been a police officer for two years early in his career, working in criminal investigation for a while. Though he didn't have a photographic memory, he generally paid attention to important people.
If she felt familiar, he must have met her before.
But he was also absolutely certain he hadn't seen this face anytime recently.
'She came with Julian Bennett. Is she one of the Bennetts?'
