The old lady motioned for Kane to stand guard at the door before taking her hand. "The performance must have been exhausting. Look at you, you've gotten so thin."
"I've told you before, a girl doesn't need to work so hard. You're a daughter of the Monroe family now. You don't have to push yourself so hard to be set for life."
Zoe Monroe silently withdrew her hand and said bluntly, "Grandma, if you have something to say, just say it."
"A lot has been happening with the family recently. Are you aware?"
"Mother mentioned it to me."
"Then you should also know, everything I've done is for Leo."
The old lady took her hand again, patting it gently. "Zoe, this isn't just for your brother. It's for your mother too."
"For my mom?"
"You'll get married someday. If Leo is successful, your mother's future will be secure. I've done so much, and while I have my own selfish reasons... I'm an old woman. How much longer do I have to live? You know full well who ultimately stands to benefit."
