Joyce's thoughts ran wild for a bit. Only when the sound of water from the bathroom stopped did she get up and open the closet to look for a blanket. She remembered having several blankets in her room, but...
She couldn't find a single one!
The crucial part was,
Someone had locked the door!
There was no way for her to go out and get a blanket even if she wanted to.
'Who did this?'
'Dad drank too much, and Ms. Hughes wouldn't be so childish. Could it be that damned little brother of mine, Leo, again? He's completely lost his mind.'
'To do all this for a brother-in-law he'd only just met... He'd really stop at nothing.'
So Joyce could only lie back down. Filled with unease, she closed her eyes and feigned sleep. She felt Silas get into bed, though he didn't move too close. He just tucked her in and placed a light kiss on her cheek. Then, the entire room fell silent.
With her back to him, Joyce was completely unaware of the fervent gaze fixed upon her from behind.
It was true.
