Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: I Dare You to Run Again

Megan Kane's time recuperating in the hospital was finally a moment of rest for her.

Rowan Monroe, even though she wasn't sick herself, insisted on staying at the hospital under the guise of keeping Megan company, refusing to leave.

"You're not better yet, are you? If you are, maybe you should just jump out the window again. Don't leave."

"I heard he's gone crazy again recently. Even Blair White is getting tormented pretty badly. We really shouldn't go back."

Rowan Monroe really didn't have the confidence to face him; she just wanted to live out the rest of her life in peace.

If she had known what kind of person Jason Forrester was beforehand, she would have steered clear of him no matter how far she had to go.

"Where did my parents go? Why haven't they come to visit after so long?"

"Have they forgotten about me? Can you try calling them for me?"

Megan Kane really couldn't figure it out. It wasn't like the hospital forbade visitors, so why hadn't she seen her parents come to see her yet?

"Your parents think they don't have much time left and are about to meet the Nether King, so they're out on a wild spending spree."

"Anyway, one day when I went back, I saw Jason Forrester holding their receipts and smiling sinisterly. I don't know if he plans to settle the score with you."

"Seriously, your parents are quite the big spenders. They bought so many things—houses, cars, a whole pile of real estate."

"And they bought it all overseas. I have no idea what they're planning."

Rowan Monroe's words were loaded, but she couldn't be bothered to spell it out.

"Ahem, hurry and call my parents over. I need to nullify the agreement with them."

"Don't let them drag me down with them."

Megan Kane finally understood why Jason Forrester had looked so strange.

'So he thinks the three of us are planning to run away.'

'Why else would they move all their assets overseas?'

"Forget it. Even if I call your parents now, they won't listen. Just focus on getting better."

"Oh, right, when the doctor comes later, we'll have to deal with him."

"No matter what, you have to put on a good act. Try to stay here for at least a year or so."

"If we don't have to go back, we won't." Rowan Monroe was mentally planning how to handle the doctor. Just as she was about to leave the hospital room, she very unfortunately ran into the one person she never wanted to see again for the rest of her life.

An awkward smile appeared on her face. 'He couldn't have heard what I just said, right? If he heard, it's all over.'

Without a second thought, Megan Kane shut her eyes and pretended to be asleep. Sometimes, closing your eyes was the best solution.

'If I close my eyes, it's all an illusion. I'll just pretend I didn't see anything.'

With a deeply awkward smile, Rowan Monroe silently retreated to the side.

"President Forrester, I was just about to go tell the doctor that she can be discharged today."

"You have no idea how much Megan Kane wants to go home. She misses you so much."

"I was even about to call and tell you. I can't believe you happened to show up right now. What a stroke of luck."

Rowan Monroe had barely finished speaking when Jason Forrester shoved her to the ground with a single swat.

"I was wondering how a hospital stay could last three months. So it was you here, poisoning her mind."

"Since you love poisoning minds so much, you can go work in a coal mine tomorrow. I've found the perfect place for you."

"You'll absolutely love it. Drag her away."

Jason Forrester would absolutely not allow anyone to challenge his authority.

"Ahem, no, don't make her work in a mine! Please leave her here for me. She's my lifeline. If she leaves too, I'll have no hope left to live."

"Besides, I was really getting ready to go back. I didn't say anything just now. She was just spouting nonsense, so don't take it to heart."

"She has a screw loose sometimes. She just spouts nonsense every now and then. She just needs a little straightening out, it's not a big problem."

Megan Kane couldn't keep pretending to be asleep any longer and could only explain with a strained smile on her face.

"Weren't you just sleeping so soundly with your eyes closed? Why did you suddenly wake up?"

"Is she more important than me in your eyes?"

"Megan Kane, don't you dare hem and haw. Look me in the eye and give me an answer. Don't think I'm a fool."

Without another word, Jason Forrester's jealousy flared.

Megan Kane felt her mind go blank. 'What did I do now?'

"That's not it at all! I was just about to wake up, and who knew you'd arrive right then? It just proves my intuition is sharp."

"I think about you every moment of every day, in my heart and in my mind. So, the moment I heard your footsteps enter the room, I woke up."

"I'm telling you, every word I'm saying now comes from the bottom of my heart. There's not a single lie."

"If I'm telling a single lie, then may I be struck by..."

Megan Kane hadn't even finished her sentence when thunder began to roll outside, threatening a downpour at any moment.

She really didn't know what she'd done wrong for even the heavens to play a trick on her.

Jason Forrester wore a sinister smile, waiting to see how the woman before him would try to talk her way out of this.

"First, think about how you're going to lie to me, or rather, how you're going to spin this."

"But I have a bill here. You can take a look."

"In just one month, your parents spent a total of 39.7 billion."

"It's not that much money, but do you think you can pay it back?"

"Or do you think you can spend the rest of your life in prison and pay it off?"

Jason Forrester felt that this sum of money was enough to buy the rest of her life.

"Isn't there a saying? The debts of the parents are the debts of the parents. It has nothing to do with me."

"If you must, go find my parents. They're the ones who owe you. Why are you coming after me?"

Megan Kane wore an extremely awkward smile. She really had no idea what her parents were trying to do. 'Aren't they just completely screwing over their own daughter?'

"You hid from me for a month, and I tolerated it for a month. Now, I won't tolerate it anymore. Understand?"

"I was giving you plenty of face, but I didn't expect you to be putting on an act. Since you like pretending so much, you can go on pretending to be sick for the rest of your life."

After Jason Forrester said this, the door was shut and the curtains were drawn.

Megan Kane didn't even have to think about what was going to happen; she knew she had absolutely nowhere left to run.

She had never imagined he would be so brazen in a hospital, completely without scruples.

She, on the other hand, was full of scruples. If anyone heard them, it would be so awkward she'd want to dig a hole and crawl into it.

Time passed slowly.

「Two hours later.」

Jason Forrester leaned against the window, smoking a cigarette and puffing out clouds of smoke.

Megan Kane leaned against the headboard, feeling as if her entire body had been wrung dry. She never thought a person could be so ferocious.

'I shouldn't have stayed in the hospital.' Her cries from earlier probably pierced the heavens.

She was too ashamed to stay any longer.
