Chapter 8 - The Blood They Tried to Kill

The council chamber was colder than the rest of the palace.

Not physically.

But in a way that settled into your bones and stayed there.

Heavy.

Judging.

Ancient.

I walked between the guards without resistance this time.

Not because I had accepted it.

But because I wanted answers.

And something told me…

This was where I would get them.

The massive doors opened slowly.

The sound echoed.

Long.

Unforgiving.

Inside—

They were already waiting.

Five elders.

Seated in a half-circle.

Silent.

Still.

Watching.

Their eyes followed me as I stepped forward.

Not with curiosity.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

My chest tightened.

They knew.

Of course they knew.

Kael walked in behind me.

His presence filled the room instantly.

Dominant.

Commanding.

Absolute.

But this time—

It didn't feel as absolute as before.

Not to me.

"Explain," he said.

No greeting.

No hesitation.

Just command.

One of the elders leaned forward slightly.

Old.

But not weak.

Not even close.

His gaze settled on me.

Sharp.

Careful.

Measuring.

"She shouldn't exist."

The words landed like a verdict.

Final.

Cold.

I didn't flinch.

Didn't look away.

"Then explain why I do," I said.

My voice was steady.

Stronger than before.

The mark pulsed.

Slow.

Controlled.

Watching them.

The elder's eyes flickered briefly to my neck.

Then back to my face.

"Because something went wrong."

Silence.

Heavy.

"What am I?" I asked.

This time—

No hesitation.

No evasion.

No lies.

"A remnant."

The word felt wrong.

Incomplete.

"Of what?" I pressed.

The elder exhaled slowly.

As if saying it out loud carried weight.

As if it mattered.

As if it was dangerous.

"A bloodline that predates the Alpha order."

The room shifted.

Even the guards behind me stiffened.

Because that—

That wasn't just rare.

That was forbidden.

Kael's expression darkened.

"Explain."

The elder nodded slightly.

"Before Alphas ruled… before the packs were bound by hierarchy…"

His voice lowered.

"…there were those who did not bow."

The mark burned.

Not painful.

Responsive.

Like it recognized the truth.

"They didn't follow commands," another elder added.

"They didn't submit."

"They didn't belong to any Alpha."

My heart pounded.

That sounded—

Too familiar.

"They were stronger," the first elder continued.

"Not in numbers… but in nature."

A pause.

Heavy.

"They could resist."

Kael's gaze flickered toward me.

Sharp.

Focused.

"They could dominate," another elder said quietly.

"Even Alphas."

Silence.

Absolute.

Because now—

Everything made sense.

The resistance.

The power.

The mark.

"You're saying…" Kael began slowly.

"That she's one of them."

The elder didn't answer immediately.

He didn't need to.

Because we all already knew.

"Yes."

The word settled like a storm.

Dangerous.

Unavoidable.

Final.

My breath caught.

"Why was the bloodline erased?" I asked.

This time—

The answer came faster.

Because this part—

They didn't hesitate to say.

"Because they couldn't be controlled."

The same words Kael had said.

But now—

They carried weight.

Truth.

History.

Fear.

"They disrupted the balance," one elder added.

"They broke the hierarchy."

"They threatened everything."

My chest tightened.

"So you killed them."

No one denied it.

No one argued.

No one even reacted.

Because it was true.

"They were necessary sacrifices," the first elder said calmly.

Cold.

Detached.

Like it meant nothing.

Like they meant nothing.

Something inside me snapped.

"You wiped out an entire bloodline…"

My voice dropped.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Because you were afraid."

Silence.

Because that—

That was the truth they didn't like.

The elder's gaze hardened.

"We preserved order."

"You preserved control."

The words came out sharper.

Stronger.

And the mark burned.

Brighter.

Alive.

"You were not meant to survive," another elder said.

More direct.

Less patient.

"And yet…"

I took a step forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"I did."

The room tensed instantly.

The guards shifted.

Ready.

Prepared.

But for what—

Even they didn't know.

Kael stepped forward slightly.

Not stopping me.

Not yet.

"What happens now?" he asked.

His voice was controlled again.

But not calm.

Not completely.

The elder didn't hesitate this time.

"We end it."

The words echoed.

Simple.

Final.

Deadly.

The air snapped.

The mark flared.

My body reacted instantly.

Power surged beneath my skin.

"You're not touching me," I said.

My voice wasn't the same.

Not fully mine.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Something that made the room itself feel smaller.

The elders felt it.

Of course they did.

That's why they feared it.

That's why they killed it.

"Restrain her," one of them ordered.

The guards moved.

Fast.

But not fast enough.

The moment they stepped closer—

The mark exploded.

Light.

Dark veins.

Power.

Everything surged at once.

The ground cracked beneath my feet.

The air shifted violently.

And then—

They were thrown back.

All of them.

Like something had rejected their presence.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Impossible.

I stood there.

Breathing.

Alive.

More than alive.

Awake.

"You see?" I said softly.

"They couldn't control us."

My gaze shifted to the elders.

Cold.

Sharp.

"You still can't."

The room shook again.

Subtle.

But real.

The power wasn't stable.

Not yet.

Not controlled.

But it didn't need to be.

Not to be dangerous.

Kael stepped forward.

This time—

Between me and them.

Not attacking.

Not commanding.

Standing.

Blocking.

The elders noticed.

Of course they did.

"Move, Alpha," one of them said sharply.

"She must be eliminated."

Kael didn't move.

Didn't respond.

Didn't obey.

That alone—

Was enough to change everything.

"You brought her here," the elder continued.

"You saw what she is."

A pause.

"Finish it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

And for the first time—

Kael hesitated.

Not because he couldn't.

Because he didn't know if he should.

I watched him.

Carefully.

Closely.

Waiting.

This was it.

The moment.

The decision.

Kill me…

or not.

The mark burned.

Waiting.

The voice whispered.

Soft.

Expectant.

"Let's see what he chooses…"

Kael's jaw tightened.

His gaze flickered to me.

Just for a second.

And in that second—

Something passed between us.

Not trust.

Not understanding.

Something more dangerous.

Connection.

And then—

He spoke.

Cold.

Final.

Clear.

"No."

Silence exploded.

The elders stood.

All of them.

At once.

"You defy the council?" one demanded.

Kael didn't look away.

Didn't step back.

Didn't hesitate.

"She stays."

The words dropped like a blade.

Sharp.

Unavoidable.

And everything—

Everything—

Changed.
