Chapter 9 - Mine to Protect… or Destroy

"No."

The word still echoed in the chamber.

Sharp.

Final.

Irreversible.

The elders stared at Kael as if he had just broken something sacred.

Because he had.

"You defy the Council for… that?" one of them spat, his voice filled with disbelief.

"That thing shouldn't even be breathing."

My jaw tightened.

But I didn't react.

Not outwardly.

Not anymore.

Because now—

I understood.

This wasn't just fear.

This was history.

And I was the part they failed to erase.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't look away.

Didn't even blink.

"I gave my answer."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came before something worse.

"You don't give answers," another elder snapped. "You follow the law."

Kael's gaze darkened.

"I am the law."

Silence.

Absolute.

Because that—

That was the truth no one could deny.

Not even them.

The tension snapped.

The room shifted.

Power against power.

Authority against authority.

And right in the middle of it—

Me.

The reason everything was about to break.

"You're making a mistake," the first elder said slowly.

Measured.

Dangerous.

"This is bigger than you."

Kael took a step forward.

Just one.

But it was enough.

Everything in the room reacted.

Subtle.

But real.

"Everything in this territory answers to me," he said.

Low.

Controlled.

Deadly.

"And I decide what stays alive."

The elders exchanged looks.

Not afraid.

But calculating.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

"Then you take responsibility for what happens next," one of them said.

A warning.

A promise.

A threat.

Kael didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

Because his silence already meant—

Yes.

They turned.

One by one.

Leaving the chamber.

But not defeated.

Not finished.

This war—

It had just begun.

The doors closed.

And just like that—

It was only us.

Again.

Silence filled the room.

But this time—

It was different.

Heavier.

More personal.

I exhaled slowly.

"You just made yourself an enemy."

Kael didn't look at me immediately.

His gaze stayed on the door.

Sharp.

Thinking.

Calculating.

"I already had enemies."

A pause.

Then—

He finally turned.

And when he looked at me—

It wasn't the same.

Not control.

Not dominance.

Something else.

Something darker.

Something closer.

"You're just the most dangerous one."

My pulse quickened.

Not from fear.

Not anymore.

"Then why didn't you kill me?"

The question slipped out before I could stop it.

But I needed the answer.

I needed to understand.

Kael stepped closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

And stopped right in front of me.

Too close.

Always too close.

"Because…"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Rougher.

"I don't kill things I don't understand."

There it was.

Truth.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

"And once you understand me?"

A dangerous question.

I knew it.

He knew it.

Still—

I asked.

Silence stretched between us.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

His eyes searched mine.

Not casually.

Not lightly.

Deep.

Like he was trying to see through me.

Into whatever I was becoming.

"That depends," he said finally.

"On what you are."

My chest tightened.

"So I'm just an experiment?"

A flicker.

Subtle.

But real.

"No."

His answer came faster this time.

More certain.

More… personal.

"You're a risk."

A pause.

"And I don't ignore risks."

I smiled slightly.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"Or you can't."

That hit.

Again.

And this time—

He didn't hide it.

"You push too much."

His voice dropped again.

Warning.

Real warning.

"Maybe you just don't like losing control."

The air shifted instantly.

That word—

Control.

That was his weakness.

And I had just touched it.

Kael moved.

Fast.

His hand slammed against the wall beside my head.

Trapping me.

Not touching.

But close enough.

Too close.

His body pressed near mine.

Heat.

Tension.

Danger.

"You think this is a game?" he asked.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Everything is a game," I whispered.

My breath brushed his.

"And I don't lose."

Silence.

But not empty.

Charged.

Explosive.

The mark burned.

Not painful.

Pulling.

Drawing me closer.

And for a moment—

Just one—

Everything else disappeared.

The council.

The threat.

The danger.

All of it.

Gone.

There was only him.

Only this.

Only the space between us.

Too small.

Too intense.

Too dangerous.

His gaze dropped again.

Brief.

To my lips.

Then back up.

Control.

He was fighting it.

Hard.

Good.

Because I was too.

"You're playing with something you don't understand," he said.

But his voice wasn't as steady anymore.

"Maybe," I replied.

"But so are you."

That—

That was the truth.

And we both knew it.

His hand moved.

Slowly.

This time—

Not to grab.

Not to hurt.

But to touch.

His fingers brushed my neck.

The mark.

And everything—

Everything—

reacted.

The connection snapped into place.

Stronger than before.

Deeper.

More dangerous.

My breath hitched.

His jaw tightened.

"This…" he muttered.

"What is this…"

I didn't answer.

Because I couldn't.

Because I felt it too.

That pull.

That bond—

But not a mate bond.

Something else.

Something wrong.

Something forbidden.

Something neither of us could control.

And that—

That was the problem.

Because power was one thing.

But this—

This was something worse.

"This changes nothing," he said suddenly.

Pulling his hand back.

Too fast.

Too sharp.

Like he needed distance.

Like he needed control again.

I watched him.

Carefully.

"Then why did you step back?"

Silence.

He didn't answer.

Of course he didn't.

Because he couldn't.

Because he felt it.

Just like I did.

"You're staying under my watch," he said finally.

Back to control.

Back to command.

"I don't need your permission."

"You don't have a choice."

There it was.

Again.

That wall.

That control.

That dominance.

But this time—

It didn't hit the same.

Because now—

I knew something he didn't.

He couldn't control me.

Not fully.

Not anymore.

And he knew it too.

I stepped past him.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Breaking the space.

Breaking the tension.

But not ending it.

Never ending it.

"This isn't over," I said quietly.

He didn't turn.

Didn't stop me.

Didn't respond.

But I felt it.

That shift.

That tension.

That connection tightening instead of breaking.

Because this—

This wasn't ending.

This was just beginning.

And as I reached the door—

The voice whispered again.

Soft.

Satisfied.

"He chose you."

My breath hitched.

No.

That wasn't right.

"This is just the start," it continued.

"And when it's over…"

A pause.

Dark.

Promising.

"Only one of you will be in control."

I didn't look back.

I didn't stop.

But one thing was clear now—

This wasn't just about survival anymore.

This wasn't just about power.

This was something else.

Something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Something that would either destroy us both—

or bind us in ways neither of us could escape.
