ELARA POV
With those words from Kael, I immediately understood where I stood. I was acting just like them.
Human beings were always meant to act like human beings. I stepped back for a second, unable to say anything, totally speechless.
"I'm sorry. You misunderstood what I said. But I never meant it that way. I am not trying to say you are an animal so you don't deserve what other humans deserve."
"It's just that you shouldn't do that to me. You don't know what you're getting yourself into. Before you make a mistake, be very careful," I said to him as he laughed.
"I made no mistake. I don't know why, but I am also puzzled as to why I am linked to you. And why is it that you hear everything when I speak to you through a mind link?"
"You always seem to understand. What's so special about you that was not special about all the other agents and surgeons who came in here trying to break me?" he said as I stayed quiet.
"I don't know. I am not special, okay? It was just a coincidence. There is nothing special. Everything has a reasonable explanation, including this. Don't ever try that again," I said.
I was about to storm off when he cleared his throat again, making me stop and wait to hear what he had to say.
"You would soon be summoned by the CEO of Axiom Biotech. Trust me. He saw you kiss me."
"He has seen hope. Fortunately for you, he is not able to hear our conversation, or else he will know exactly what he's going to do when he realizes how much of a connection you have to me," he said again as I turned angrily toward him.
"We have no connection. Stop saying we have some sort of connection when we don't have anything between us, okay? I am here to investigate, and that is what I am doing," I said angrily as he laughed again.
I hated his laughter at this point. It made me so irritated whenever I said something serious and he always turned it into a joke, or used my every word to amuse himself.
"Wow, you seem so determined, and I love that about you. You know, it makes me feel even more curious to know who you are."
"You really think you're going to get anything from me by investigating? I would never tell you where my pack resides."
"I repeat that, and I will keep saying it into your ear. You are not worthy to know where they are. Stop forcing it," he said and looked away.
I looked up at the camera, clearly aware that they were watching me. I wanted to rush toward him and deliver a heavy slap, but I couldn't do that. I just had to clench my hand tightly in a fist and swallow back my anger.
"I am not going to lose my guard because of you," I insisted, storming off.
I raced out and did not even know where exactly to go. If I went to my locker, then everybody was going to notice I was upset about something, even though nobody knew exactly what my job was.
Yeah, they just knew I came in and I went out. I knew very few people would begin to question things and soon realize I was given a secret job nobody else was in charge of.
I stood there in front of the door, breathing heavily as one of the guards looked at me.
"Did he try to stab you?" he said with a cheeky smile.
I did not even bother to respond and just left. I decided I was going to go back and see Raya. I just needed to find the right words to explain to her that I could not do this anymore.
Yes, I had proved my fault to Marcus too, that I was not able to prove his words wrong and that I would not be able to cope with the job. And clearly, I couldn't even last a week working for them. I was already feeling frustrated.
But I decided to give it one more chance. Just at that moment, my phone began to ring.
I looked at the screen to see it was a number I did not recognize. I had no close friends, and neither was I very social, so I wouldn't normally expect a stranger's call, but I decided to pick up anyway.
"Hello?" I uttered as the other end was silent for a second before I heard a quick sound and then a response.
"I am Mr. George, the CEO of Axiom Biotech, and I need you in my office now," he said and ended the call as I felt my heart suddenly thump loudly.
Not because I had finally been able to speak to the CEO, whom I had so badly wanted to meet, who had been my ambition back when I was in university, but because just a few minutes ago, Kael had said I would come in contact with the CEO, that he would call for me. It seemed as if he was predicting everything about this place, like he had been here for years.
I arranged myself and went to the secretary to find out which floor the CEO's office was on. I was soon directed where to go, and I gently made my way to his office. I knocked almost immediately and was told to come in.
Stepping in, I saw him with Raya as she was explaining some documents to him. I was about to turn around when he looked at me.
"Where exactly are you going? Take a seat," he said, pointing to one of the sofas in the corner.
I took my seat, a bit nervous, my eyes glancing between him and Raya. He looked so intimidating and young to be a CEO, but yet you could see that greedy gaze in his eyes as he went through everything Raya was explaining to him.
He looked at me, and our eyes met. I tried to look away immediately as he gave me a smirk.
"I think this is all for today. You will continue the explanation for me tomorrow. I find this very interesting. We are finally making a lead," he said.
I felt my heart heavy again, knowing he was clearly talking about Kael's case. Just as I was nervously about to stand up and ask why exactly he had called me here, he stood up himself and walked toward me.
I placed both my hands on my lap, trying to keep myself calm as I could already feel myself shaking, clearly hoping that he was not about to dismiss me. Even though I had been just about to give up my job to Raya, claiming I couldn't continue.
He took a seat beside me and stayed quiet, pushing a cup of coffee toward me.
"I made that specially for you. I just hope it's not too sweet," he said as I simply sat there, not even able to pick up the cup, just frozen.
He looked at me for a split second before clearing his throat and straightening his tie.
"I know you are very familiar with me as the CEO of Axiom Biotech, which I inherited from my father, and ever since I did, I haven't been able to make something fruitful with it. I have a very interesting story to tell you," he said, and I knew for sure it had to do with Kael.
I was just not ready for what exactly he was about to throw at me.
