### Chapter One: The First Dream

The first thing was the smell.

Something old. Something that had decided long ago it would smell expensive and had never reconsidered. Wood polish and cold stone and underneath both of those something that wasn't quite either — something that hummed, very faintly, if you paid attention.

Most people in this house didn't pay attention.

The ceiling was high. Plastered in patterns that meant someone had once been paid to care specifically about this ceiling, this room, these particular curling shapes at the corners. A chandelier hung in the center with candles that hadn't been lit tonight. Outside the window — grey. English grey, the specific shade that meant morning had technically arrived but hadn't committed to anything yet.

A peacock stood on the lawn doing nothing in particular.

The child in the crib looked at it for a long time.

Then the understanding arrived. The way understanding always does — slowly, and then very suddenly, like a word you've been trying to remember finally surfacing at three in the morning when you no longer need it.

*Oh.*

The child's hands were very small. He looked at them for a while. Turned them over. Turned them back.

*Oh no.*

He didn't cry. He'd been in this body long enough to know that crying produced results he couldn't currently process — a tall blonde woman with careful eyes who smelled like something floral and expensive, who would hold him and say things in a low voice until the crying stopped. He wasn't ready for that yet. He needed to think.

Thinking was harder than it used to be.

The thoughts were there — he could feel them, all of them, a whole life's worth pressing against the inside of his skull — but getting to them was like trying to read through frosted glass. Shapes. Outlines. The sense of something without the specifics.

He knew his name. That was the first thing he'd understood, weeks ago, when the voices around him started making patterns. *Draco.* Said with a particular weight, a particular pride. *Draco Lucius Malfoy.* Three names like three locks on a door.

He knew the woman's name. *Narcissa.* He knew the tall man who moved through the house like he owned it, because he did, because everything in this house existed in precise relationship to him — *Lucius.* Said differently than the woman's name. With something underneath it that the child was still too young to fully name but old enough to feel.

He knew the peacock's name was Ptolemy and it was deeply self-important and had once bitten a gardener who had not been seen since.

These were the things he knew for certain.

Everything else was frosted glass.

The dream had started it.

He'd been having them for — he didn't know how long. Time was difficult. Days blurred. But the dreams kept coming and they were different from the dark nothing of regular sleep. They had colour. They had sound. They had a specific quality of realness that regular things didn't, which was strange, because regular things were supposed to be the real ones.

In the dreams there was a room. Dark. Rows of seats. A large flat surface at the front that showed moving pictures — he knew what this was, somewhere in the frosted glass he knew, but the word kept sliding away.

In the dreams there was a boy.

Messy hair. Round glasses. A scar on his forehead shaped like — like —

*Lightning.*

The child in the crib went very still.

The peacock outside ruffled its feathers and looked at something in the hedges with aristocratic disdain.

*Lightning bolt scar.*

The frosted glass cracked slightly. Just one thin line. Just enough.

*Green eyes. The Dursleys. Hagrid. A letter. A train. A hat.*

The child grabbed the bars of the crib with both small hands and held on.

*A castle.*

*Wands.*

*Magic.*

He looked at his hands again. Small. Pale. Soft in the way that things are soft when they haven't been used for anything yet.

In the dream the flat surface had shown a world. A very specific world. And he had sat in the dark watching it and thought — the way you think about things that aren't real, that can't be real, that you love precisely because they're impossible —

*I wish.*

The door opened.

Narcissa came in the way she always did — quietly, like sound was a resource she was careful with. She was already dressed. It was probably early. She was always already dressed.

She looked at him in the crib. Something moved across her face that she put away before it finished arriving.

"You're awake," she said, which was true and also not the point.

The child looked at her.

She came to the crib and reached in and he let her pick him up because there was nothing else to do about it and also — and this was the part he couldn't quite explain even to himself — her arms felt like something he recognized.

Not from the frosted glass. Not from the dreams.

From here.

From this body that wasn't exactly his and also wasn't exactly not.

She carried him to the window. Outside, the grounds of Malfoy Manor spread out in the grey morning light. Geometrically perfect hedges. Gravel paths that went exactly where they were supposed to go. The greenhouse in the far corner with its iron and glass. The peacock — Ptolemy — had relocated to the fountain and was examining his reflection with what could only be called professional interest.

"Look," Narcissa said, quietly. To herself as much as to him.

He looked.

The grounds were very beautiful if you liked things that had been controlled into beauty. He was beginning to understand that he did, a little. That this body had opinions that weren't entirely borrowed. That somewhere in the ghost of whoever had lived here before him there was a genuine appreciation for exactly this — grey morning, perfect hedges, a ridiculous peacock who took himself very seriously.

The frosted glass cracked a little more.

*Draco Malfoy.*

*Slytherin.*

*He offers Harry his hand and Harry says no.*

The child pressed his forehead very gently against the cold window glass.

*Harry Potter.*

*It's real.*

All of it. The castle. The wands. The boy with the scar and the woman with the red hair and the enormous man with the beard and the portraits and the staircases and the owls and the —

*Magic.*

He was in a world where magic was real.

He was in *that* world.

"Cold," Narcissa said, and pulled him back from the window with firm, careful hands. She was already moving toward the door, toward breakfast probably, toward the day assembling itself with Malfoy precision.

The child looked back over her shoulder at the window.

At the grounds.

At Ptolemy the peacock, who had finished examining his reflection and was now walking away from the fountain with the air of someone who had confirmed everything he needed to know.

Something was happening in the child's chest. He didn't have the vocabulary for it yet — this body was too young, the words were still frosted glass — but he knew the shape of it.

He'd felt it once before, in another life, in a dark room with rows of seats, watching a world that couldn't possibly be real.

*I wish.*

Except now he wasn't wishing.

He was here.

The something in his chest expanded until it pressed against his ribs from the inside.

Later, when he was older, when the frosted glass had mostly cleared and he had language for things, he would try several times to describe what that moment felt like. In private journals written in cipher. In the quiet space behind the Malfoy mask where he kept the things that were actually true.

He never found the right words.

The closest he ever got was this:

*Imagine something you love so much that wanting it hurts. Now imagine waking up inside it.*

*That.*

*That exactly.*

Lucius was at breakfast.

He always was. Precise about meals the way he was precise about everything — time, placement, the exact angle at which a thing should sit relative to another thing. The breakfast table at Malfoy Manor was an exercise in controlled perfection. Silver that knew it was silver. China that had opinions about lesser china. Toast in a rack as though toast required formal presentation.

Narcissa set the child in the high chair at the end of the table. The child sat in it.

Lucius looked up from his correspondence.

He had a way of looking at things that made them feel assessed. Filed. Assigned a value and a position in a larger system the rest of the room wasn't entirely privy to. He turned this look on the child the way he turned it on everything else.

The child looked back.

Something shifted in Lucius's face. Almost nothing. But the child had been studying that face for — however long he'd been here — and he caught it.

*Interesting.*

"He's watching again," Lucius said, not to the child. To Narcissa, who was pouring tea with a steadiness that suggested she had opinions about this conversation which she was choosing not to have.

"He's always watching," she said.

"Yes." Lucius set down his letter. He had the kind of stillness that wasn't the absence of movement so much as the decision not to move. "The Malfoy men are observers first. It's how we've survived things others haven't."

He said this to the child. Directly. As though the child could understand.

The child could understand.

He kept his face at neutral. This body seemed to do that naturally — there was something in the inherited muscle memory, some training that had happened before he arrived, some ghost-knowledge of how a Malfoy face was supposed to sit.

*Neutral.* His father approved of neutral.

*My father.*

He filed that away. The word and everything it meant and everything it was going to mean and the specific weight it already had at five years old.

Filed away. For later.

"Good morning," Lucius said to him, with the gravity of someone saying something that meant more than the words.

The child considered him across the perfectly set breakfast table.

"Good morning," he said back.

His voice came out small. Obviously. He was five. But something in it was careful in a way that small children's voices usually aren't.

Lucius watched him for another moment.

Then went back to his correspondence.

Narcissa, pouring tea, said nothing. But her hands were very steady.

Later that day he found the library.

Not found — he'd been in it before, he'd been everywhere in this house in the way that small children are carried through places by adults — but today was different. Today he walked in on his own, which he could do now because the legs had gotten reliable, and he stood in the doorway and looked at it properly for the first time.

It was a very serious library. It took itself very seriously. Books from floor to ceiling on all four walls and the ceiling was high and there was a rolling ladder on a brass rail and everything smelled of leather and something older than leather and the light came in through tall windows in long dusty columns that made the whole room feel like being inside something important.

He walked to the nearest shelf and looked at the spines.

He couldn't read them yet. The letters were shapes he recognized as letters without knowing which ones. That would come. He could feel it coming the way you can feel rain before it arrives — something in the air changing, tightening, getting ready.

He reached out and touched one spine. Just with the tips of his fingers.

The book didn't do anything. It was a book.

But the something in his chest did the thing it had been doing since this morning. That pressing feeling. That thing he didn't have words for yet.

He stood in the Malfoy library in the grey English morning with his fingers on the spine of a book he couldn't read and he thought —

*There's magic in here.*

*In this world there is actual magic and eventually I'm going to learn it and I'm going to understand it and I'm going to —*

He stopped.

Took a breath.

The frosted glass sent one more thing through.

Just a fragment. Just an image. A boy with messy hair and round glasses, opening a letter, reading it for the first time, his face doing something it had probably never done before.

*You're a wizard, Harry.*

The child in the library smiled.

It was a small smile. He was already learning to be careful with his face.

But it was a real one.

*In his private journals — the ones written years later in a cipher of his own invention — he would describe this day in a single line:*

*"Age 5. First clear dream. Understood where I was. Understood what that meant."*

*Then, underneath, in slightly different handwriting, added some time later:*

*"What I did not write: that the first thing I felt was not fear or calculation or the instinct to plan.*

*It was gratitude.*

*I was in a world where magic was real.*

*The rest could wait."*
