Chapter 34 - Chapter -34

The Whisper of the Rain

The rain continued through the night.

Soft drops tapped gently against the wooden roof of the farmhouse, creating a peaceful rhythm that echoed across Greenwood Village. The cool air carried the fresh scent of wet soil and blooming flowers.

Inside her small room, Maya sat quietly on the edge of the bed.

She stared at her hand.

The faint silver glow from last night had disappeared, but the memory remained clear in her mind.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"What is happening to me?" she whispered.

A strange mixture of fear and curiosity filled her heart.

She had never seen anything like it before.

And yet… it felt familiar.

Morning arrived slowly.

Grey clouds still covered the sky, and light rain continued to fall over the village fields. The ground outside looked soft and muddy, and small puddles had formed along the narrow dirt paths.

Arjun stepped out of the farmhouse carrying a wooden umbrella.

He looked toward the field and frowned slightly.

Water had gathered between the rows of crops.

Too much rain could damage everything.

His vegetables.

His harvest.

His future.

He took a deep breath and walked toward the field, his boots sinking slightly into the wet soil.

Behind him, the farmhouse door opened quietly.

Maya stepped outside.

She noticed the worried expression on Arjun's face immediately.

"Is something wrong?" she asked gently.

Arjun turned toward her.

His voice sounded calm, but his eyes revealed concern.

"The rain is too heavy," he explained.

"If it continues like this, the crops may rot."

Maya looked toward the flooded field.

Water covered the soil, reflecting the dull grey sky above.

She felt a sudden tightness in her chest.

Without the harvest, Arjun would lose everything.

She did not know why, but that thought hurt her deeply.

"I want to help," Maya said softly.

Arjun blinked in surprise.

"You already help just by staying safe," he replied.

But Maya shook her head.

"No," she insisted gently.

"I don't want to be a burden."

Her voice carried quiet determination.

Arjun studied her face for a moment.

He could see sincerity in her eyes.

Finally, he nodded.

"Alright," he said.

"You can help me clear the water channels."

A small smile appeared on Maya's lips.

"Thank you."

Together, they walked into the muddy field.

Rain fell steadily around them, soaking their clothes and hair. Arjun used a shovel to dig small drainage paths so the water could flow away from the crops.

Maya followed beside him, carefully moving the wet soil with her hands.

The work was slow and tiring.

But she did not complain.

Her focus remained strong.

After a few minutes, Arjun noticed something unusual.

The soil near Maya's hands looked different.

Less muddy.

Less heavy.

Water seemed to move faster around her.

Almost as if the ground itself was responding to her touch.

He paused and watched quietly.

Maya placed her palm gently on the wet earth.

Without realizing it, she closed her eyes.

A soft warmth spread through her fingers.

The rain around her suddenly slowed.

The water in the soil began to shift.

Small streams formed naturally, guiding the flood away from the plants.

The leaves nearby straightened.

The soil became firmer.

Healthier.

Arjun's eyes widened.

He stepped closer, staring in disbelief.

"Maya…" he whispered.

She opened her eyes slowly.

The strange warmth faded instantly.

Everything returned to normal.

She looked confused.

"What happened?" she asked.

Arjun hesitated.

He did not know how to explain what he had just seen.

"It's nothing," he said quietly.

"Maybe the ground settled."

But inside, his heart beat faster.

Because he knew—

That was not normal.

Suddenly, a loud voice echoed across the field.

"Arjun!"

Both of them turned quickly.

An elderly man walked toward them through the rain.

He wore a thick brown coat and carried a wooden walking stick. His long grey beard moved gently with each step.

It was Hari Das, the village head.

His face looked serious.

"Come quickly," Hari Das called.

"There is a problem near the river."

Arjun's expression changed immediately.

"What happened?" he asked.

Hari Das stopped in front of them, breathing heavily.

"The water level is rising fast," he said.

"If the river overflows, the entire village will flood."

A cold silence filled the air.

Maya felt her heart sink.

Flood.

Danger.

Loss.

Fear spread through her chest.

"We must go," Arjun said firmly.

He grabbed his shovel and started running toward the river.

Maya followed without hesitation.

Rain fell harder as they moved across the muddy path.

Thunder rumbled in the distance.

The sky looked darker than before.

When they reached the riverbank, a crowd of villagers had already gathered.

Men and women stood nervously near the edge of the rising water.

The river roared loudly, crashing against the muddy shore.

Its current looked wild and uncontrollable.

Children clung tightly to their parents.

Fear filled every face.

Arjun stepped forward.

The river level had climbed dangerously high.

Only a few more inches—

And it would spill into the village.

"We need to build a barrier," someone shouted.

"But the current is too strong!" another villager replied.

Panic spread quickly through the crowd.

Maya stood silently behind them, watching the rushing water.

A strange feeling stirred inside her again.

The same warmth.

The same pull.

As if the river was calling her.

She slowly stepped closer to the edge.

Her heart beat faster.

Her hand lifted slightly.

The air around her felt heavy.

Charged.

Without thinking, she whispered softly—

"Please… stop."

For a brief moment—

The river's surface trembled.

Its violent waves slowed slightly.

The water level stopped rising.

A sudden silence fell over the crowd.

Everyone stared at the river in shock.

"What just happened?" someone whispered.

Arjun turned quickly toward Maya.

His eyes filled with confusion and wonder.

Because he had seen it clearly.

The river had responded.

To her.

But the moment lasted only a few seconds.

Then—

A powerful surge of water crashed forward again.

The river roared even louder than before.

The ground beneath their feet shook.

A section of the muddy bank suddenly collapsed.

Villagers screamed in fear.

Arjun grabbed Maya's hand instantly.

"Move back!" he shouted.

They ran away from the collapsing edge just in time.

Water splashed violently onto the shore, soaking their clothes.

The danger felt real.

Immediate.

Terrifying.

Maya's breathing became heavy.

Her heart pounded inside her chest.

She looked down at her trembling hands.

A faint silver glow appeared again—

Just for a second.

Then disappeared.

Arjun noticed it.

This time, he could not ignore it.

He stepped closer to her slowly.

His voice sounded quiet but serious.

"Maya…"

She looked up at him nervously.

"Yes?"

He hesitated for a moment.

Then spoke carefully.

"There is something different about you."

A long silence followed.

Rain continued falling around them.

The river roared in the background.

And deep inside Maya's heart—

Fear began to grow.

Because she knew—

Soon, the truth about her powers would no longer remain hidden.
