Chapter 15 - Playing with Fire

The afternoon sun spilled gold across the backyard, painting everything in warmth.

Ethan and I had slipped away while Maya was distracted with some errands.

We sat on the porch swing, side by side, our shoulders barely touching—but that small contact was enough to make my heart race.

"You know," he said softly, leaning back slightly, "I could get used to this. Just… spending time with you like this."

"Yeah?" I asked, glancing at him, my voice light, but my chest pounding.

"Yeah," he replied, turning to give me a small, playful grin. "You make everything better. Even boring things like sitting on a swing in the sun.

I laughed softly. "You're ridiculous."

He leaned a fraction closer. "Maybe. But you like it."

Heat rushed to my cheeks.

I tried to look away, but my eyes betrayed me, flicking to his every time he moved.

"You know," he continued, voice low and teasing, "I could kiss you right now. And you wouldn't stop me."

My heart skipped a beat.

"I—" I stammered, unsure how to respond.

His hand brushed mine lightly, fingers just grazing mine.

"I mean it," he murmured. "I've wanted to for days."

I swallowed hard, feeling the warmth of his hand.

"You're… impossible," I whispered, trying to sound scolding, but failing entirely.

He laughed softly, that deep, familiar sound that made my knees weak.

"Maybe I like being impossible," he said, eyes sparkling with mischief. "Especially with you."

I felt a shiver run down my spine.

Before I could reply, he leaned just slightly closer, close enough for me to feel his breath on my lips.

"Ethan!" I whispered, heart racing.

"Relax," he murmured, eyes locked on mine. "No one's watching. Just… breathe."

I did. Slowly. Trying to steady my racing heart.

We sat like that for a long moment, the world fading away, until I finally whispered, "We're playing with fire, you know that?"

He smirked. "I know. And I'm not afraid of getting burned."

I laughed softly. "You're crazy."

"Crazy about you," he corrected, leaning closer again.

And this time, I didn't step back.

Our lips met softly, teasingly at first, then deeper, slower, letting every pent-up emotion finally escape.

I rested my hand on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart, matching it with my own.

Pulling back slightly, he whispered, "I could get used to this. You… me… us."

"I could too," I admitted, voice barely audible.

Then, footsteps on the porch.

"Maya!" I gasped, jumping slightly.

She appeared, arms crossed, a suspicious glare on her face.

"You two are impossible!" she exclaimed.

Ethan stepped back, trying not to laugh.

"I swear we weren't—" he started.

"I saw everything!" Maya interrupted. "Do you have any idea what this does to me?"

I groaned softly. "Maya, please… it's not what you think."

Her eyes narrowed. "Then explain it. Because you two are clearly hiding something huge."

Ethan and I exchanged a glance, both trying not to laugh.

"I guess… we're just… figuring things out," I said softly.

"Figuring things out?" she echoed, arms crossed. "Like flirting in the sun and almost kissing? That's figuring things out?"

Ethan smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Maya, we care about you. But… this is real. And we can't hide it anymore."

Maya sighed, shaking her head.

"You two are ridiculous," she muttered.

I laughed softly.

"Maybe," Ethan said quietly. "But at least we're happy."

Maya looked between us, her expression softening slightly.

"Just… don't forget about me," she said quietly.

"We won't," I promised, smiling.

And as Ethan took my hand again, holding it gently, I realized something thrilling:

For the first time, I didn't have to hide my feelings.

I didn't have to pretend.

I could just… be.

With him.
