Chapter 14 - Close Enough to Feel

The next morning started quietly, almost unnervingly so.

I was in the kitchen, sipping my tea, trying to convince myself that everything was normal.

Ethan walked in, wearing a casual T-shirt and jeans, his hair messy from sleep.

Even like that, he looked… impossibly good.

"Morning," he said softly, leaning against the counter.

"Morning," I replied, trying to sound casual. My heart, however, refused to cooperate.

He tilted his head, eyes scanning me in a way that made my pulse race.

"You've been quiet," he murmured.

"Just thinking," I replied, trying not to sound breathless.

His gaze softened. "About what?"

I swallowed, feeling heat creep up my neck.

"About… us," I admitted finally.

He smiled slightly. "Good thoughts or bad?"

"Good," I said immediately, but my voice wavered slightly.

He chuckled softly, stepping closer.

"You know," he said quietly, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face, "I've been waiting for the right moment to… just be close to you without pretending we're not."

My chest tightened.

"Ethan…" I whispered, unsure of what to say.

He leaned closer, just enough that I could feel his warmth.

"Just breathe," he murmured, his voice low.

I did. Slowly. Trying to steady my racing heart.

"You make it impossible to think straight," I admitted.

He smirked, that infuriating, charming smirk.

"And you make it impossible to stay away," he said softly.

My heart leapt.

We stood there, inches apart, feeling the tension between us grow with every breath.

I wanted to move closer.

I wanted to reach out and touch him.

But before I could, Maya's voice called from the hallway.

"Lara! Ethan! Breakfast is ready!"

We jumped apart, both flushed and suddenly aware of how close we'd been.

"Yeah! Coming!" I called back, trying to sound normal.

Ethan gave me a small, mischievous glance, and I felt heat rise to my cheeks.

After breakfast, we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood.

Maya had wandered ahead, talking animatedly about something trivial.

Ethan and I were alone.

He reached for my hand slowly, brushing his fingers against mine.

I looked up at him, heart hammering.

"You know," he whispered, "I could get used to this. Holding your hand like this."

"Ethan!" I whispered, flustered.

He laughed softly. "Relax, I'm not going to let go."

And he didn't.

We walked like that for a while, hands lightly intertwined, enjoying the warmth and quiet intimacy.

At one point, we stopped near a small park.

He turned to face me, eyes intense.

"You know what I love most?" he asked softly.

"What?" I whispered, heart racing.

"Everything about you," he said seriously. "Your laugh, your stubbornness, the way you think too much… even the way you try to hide your feelings."

I felt my face heat up.

"You're ridiculous," I murmured, looking away.

"No," he said gently, turning my face toward him with his hand. "I'm serious. I can't stop thinking about you. About us."

I swallowed hard. "I… I feel the same way," I admitted.

He smiled softly, leaning closer.

"Then stop pretending we're not a thing," he whispered.

My chest tightened.

"Ethan…" I murmured, but I couldn't stop the small smile that spread across my face.

He smiled back, his thumb brushing my cheek.

We stayed there for a long moment, just looking at each other, letting the tension and warmth linger.

And I realized, with a sudden, thrilling certainty.

I was falling for him faster than I ever imagined.

And I wasn't going to stop.
