Chapter 4 - The Passage of Time

Kael moved through the forest with careful steps. The AI's overlays highlighted safe paths and flagged unusual flora. Some plants glowed faintly with internal energy, others bore fruits that the scanner labeled as nutrient-dense but potentially volatile.

His body protested the exertion after long cryogenic inactivity. Muscles ached. Joints felt stiff. Yet each step built strength. He paused at a stream to drink and rest, splashing cool water on his face.

"Chronological analysis complete," the AI reported during one break. "Cross-referencing radiation decay patterns and geological markers confirms approximately one million years since sealing."

Kael stared at the rippling water. "Everything I knew is gone. Schools. Cities. Even the languages probably changed."

"Language drift is extreme based on micro-bee audio samples. New dialects incorporate tonal elements and Ki-infused phonetics."

Kael continued onward. The passage of time manifested in every detail. Massive trees that must have grown from seeds long after the catastrophe. Animal tracks larger and more varied than any zoo record. The complete absence of plastic or metal debris from the old world.

He climbed a gentle rise and looked back toward the hidden bunker entrance. Nothing marked it from above. Nature had reclaimed everything.

A distant roar echoed through the trees. Kael froze. The AI zoomed in on a large feline creature with shimmering fur patterns that seemed to bend light.

"Predator. Ki-enhanced physiology. Recommend avoidance."

Kael detoured widely. The encounter reminded him how vulnerable he remained. A ten-year-old body offered little natural defense in this wild landscape.

As daylight faded, he found a sheltered hollow beneath a fallen log. He ate sparingly and activated a small thermal blanket from his pack. Sleep came in fits, haunted by dreams of his parents' capsules failing while he wandered lost.

Morning brought renewed purpose. Kael pressed east toward the settlement detected earlier. Along the way he practiced basic observations. He noted how certain flowers responded to his proximity by brightening or dimming. The AI suggested this might relate to ambient Ki fields.

"Attempt to sense internal energy," the AI suggested during a quiet moment.

Kael closed his eyes and focused as instructed from old meditation techniques in the bunker archives. Nothing happened at first. Then a faint warmth stirred in his abdomen, gone almost immediately.

"Minimal response detected. Continued practice recommended."

Progress, however small, lifted his spirits.

By afternoon he reached the edge of cultivated land. Fields of strange grains swayed in the breeze, tended by figures in simple robes. Kael crouched behind bushes and observed.

The people moved with fluid efficiency. One woman lifted a heavy basket using only one hand, a soft glow around her arm. Children practiced forms that combined movement and breathing. An elder oversaw them, correcting postures with sharp commands in the unfamiliar tongue.

Kael's stomach twisted with a mix of hope and fear. These were humans. Descendants perhaps, or a new branch of humanity shaped by the changed world.

He remained hidden until dusk. When the villagers returned to their wooden homes, he crept closer to the perimeter. A wooden palisade surrounded the settlement, reinforced with stone at the base.

"Language patterns emerging," the AI said. "I can begin basic translation overlays with more exposure."

Kael nodded. Communication would be essential.

Night fell. Fires lit the village square. Laughter and songs carried on the wind, accompanied by rhythmic drumming. The scene felt both alien and warmly human.

Kael found a concealed spot to sleep, mind racing with questions. How did Ki work? Why had technology vanished? What event had forced such radical evolution?

The passage of one million years had rewritten the rules of existence. Kael, still physically a child, carried the last fragments of the old world in his mind and tools.

He whispered to the night sky, "I am here. And I will learn your secrets."

Tomorrow he would attempt contact. The risk felt necessary. Isolation in the forest offered only slow decline. The village held knowledge and community, even if suspicion greeted a strange outsider.

The stars above looked similar yet subtly different. Constellations shifted by cosmic time.

Kael closed his eyes. The weight of history pressed upon his small shoulders, but resolve grew stronger with each breath.
