The greatest threat isn't always outside. Sometimes, it's the moment your people stop believing in you.
"Run on my signal."
Stacy's voice cuts clean through the darkness.
The raiders were seconds away as lights sliced through the shadows with footsteps closing in and weapons raised waiting for her. Stacy counted silently with eyes locked ahead.
"Three…"
"Two…"
"One…"
"Now!"
The tunnel exploded into motion as they all scattered, As Stacy took the left turn, Jasper pulled left dragging half the group with him, the split was intentional which helped to reduce the chance of total loss but it came with a cost, gunfires erupted instantly echoing violently through the tunnel and a scream cutted through the chaos but Jasper didn't look back because his group was already struggling to keep up. The chase was pretty tight as the tunnel narrowed further for forcing their into a single line.
"This is wrong!" An angry voice snapped behind Jasper.
"We shouldn't have splatted!"
Another voice joined
"You got us trapped!"
The words hitted harder than bullets because doubt spreads fast but they were all running based on trust. Jasper didn't slow down he just said.
"Keep moving."
"That's your answer?!
Stan asked as he pushed forward beside him with his eyes burning with frustration.
"You don't even know where we're going!"
"No one does." Jasper replied coldly.
"Then stop pretending you're in control!"
Immediately, the group started to fracture again, it was fear mixed with anger.
"He's right!" Someone added.
Footsteps falter and momentum broke and that was the most dangerous thing of all. Jasper stopped suddenly and th group crashed into him breathing hard with eyes wild. Echoes from the Gunfire was closer now. Jasper knew that if he didn't deal with what was happening they wouldn't survive the next turn, so he turned slowly and looked at all of them.
"You want control?" His voice was too calm.
"Take it." He said.
On one expected that as he stepped aside slightly.
"Pink a direction."
Stan hesitated for a while because now he already knew that the weight was real.
"Go a head, lead us." Jasper said.
The group all watched with keen interest waiting as seconds passed. On one moved and then Jasper stepped forward agin with a sharper voice now.
"This isn't a out knowing the way." As he pointed towards the echoes of gunfire.
"It's a out staying ahead of what's behind us."
"And not freezing when it's mattered."
Stan lowered his gaze slightly neither did Jasper press further, and then he turned.
"Move."
They all willingly followed as the chase intensified. The tunnel splitted ahead into two paths with no time to analyze deeply.
"Left."
Behind them, the raiders reached the fork and splitted on to two, they guessed right or got lucky either way they were still being chased. As the tunnel changed again and became more stable now, debris fell and make every step risky.
"If this falls…" Stan said
"We don't stop." Jasper finished it.
A section of the tunnel gave way behind them partially collapsing and blocking some of the raiders but now all and the sound shook everyone. Fear spiked again but this time they didn't break because something had changed. The tunnel end were dead ends with no exit or escape, it was just a solid wall of rock. As reality settled in, silences crashed over them and only with heavy breathing.
"This…this is it…" someone whispered.
Stan looked at Jasper again in a tired manner.
"Now what? He asked.
Jasper stepped forward slowly and you he'd the wall. As he felt it and then listened, he realized that it wasn't a dead end as air moved behind it. As he turned back to the group with sharp eyes, he said.
This isn't the end."
Behind them voice echoed again and now closer and raiders broke through the collapse. Jasper placed his hands firmly against the wall and beckoned for help in order to break it because beyond it was either escape or something even worse. As the first crack began to form and the raiders closed in behind them, one one terrifying question hanged in the air, did they just find a way out…or another trap waiting to close?
