Chapter 37 - Moving Forward

Standing still gets you killed and moving forward? gets you tested.

"Don't run." Jasper said with a low tone sharp enough to cut through panic, panic arose as the convoy surrounded them. Engines rumbled as weapons were aimed, dust choking the air and fear spreads faster than anything els. The loud speaker screamed again.

"On your your knees…now!"

The command slammed into the group as some hesitated, others started to comply while some froze completely. After Jaspr had counted both weapons and movements, he measured out the distance as well. There were too many weapons, so he thought it was not a fight they will win.

"Do it," he said quietly to his group

"Slow and Together."

And this time they did listen without any question. They all dropped to their knees one by one bending to survive. Stacy knelt beside Jasper, there was no distance between them anymore.

"What are you thinking?" She whispered

Jasper didn't look at her rather he kept his focus and answered.

"This isn't random"

"They are organized and disciplined"

"Which me as they control certain territory."

"And us? She asked quietly.

Jasper exhaled once

"We're either a resource…"

"…or a problem."

The vehicle doors opened one by one with heavy sound which was deliberate. Boots hit the ground as they moved with tight formations and their weapons ready with their eyes scanning everywhere. Zod and his group were already tensed because they were no longer in charge anymore. As a new leader stepped forward, his presence was quite different and calm and subtly dangerous in a quiet way.

"Who is in charge here? He asked

No one spoke immediately because they all knew that the question was a trap.

After a while Jasper answered anyway

"I am."

His word was unshaken and stable.

The man studied him longer enough and then nodded slightly.

"Stand."

Jaspers hesitated for half a second and then rose slowly. The group watched closely because now everything depended on the interaction.

"You're moving east," the Leader said

"Yes." Jasper replied

"Why?" He asked

Jasper hesitated because truth was dangerous in his situation and lies? Far worse.

"Because staying still kills people."

The Leader's expression didn't change but something was noted respect? Or Interest?

"You left someone behind," the man added suddenly.

Jasper's Jaw tightened

"Yes."

"Why?" The question cutted deeper now because it was personal. As Jasper held his gaze he said.

"Because I couldn't save him…without losing everyone else."

Silence followed heavily and the leader nodded once

"Good."

Stacy's expression hardens slightly

"You understand cost," the leader continued

"Most don't." He stepped to Jasper as he lowered his voice.

"That makes you useful." He assessed and judged Jasper.

"What do you want?" Jasper asked the Leader and he smiled faintly.

"Move forward with us."

The group reacted immediately as tension spiked and fear returned.

"That's not an offer, is it?" Jasper asked

"No." The answer was immediate and honest.

Another Line has been drawn again, whether to follow them or face the consequences. Jasper looked back at his group and he could literally see the fear, doubt and exhaustion in their faces including their dependence on him. He turned back and said.

"We move"

The group reacted but there was no argument this time it resistance because after everything, the only thing left was to move forward. As the formation changed, the convoy surrounded them close enough to control them and just like that, they were no longer free survivors but part of something else bigger and unknown to them yet. They all marched together under pressure and watch and someone else's rules. Stacy and Stan walked beside Jasper closer this time grounded.

"You made a call," she said quietly

"Yeah." Jasper said.

"You sure about it? Stan asked.

Jasper didn't answer immediately because certainty is a luxury that he doesn't have anymore.

"….No."

He was being honest again and somehow that mattered more. As they moved east under the convoy control, the terrain began to change, it was subtle at first and then undeniable structures appeared in the distance standing operational, there were electric lights, real lights which were active. The group slowed down slightly because whatever they were seeing shouldn't exist anymore. The truth was becoming clear that it was not just a survival territory but somehow a rebuilt facility with hierarchy, power and secrets. Jasper's eyes narrowed as he thought on it.

As the convoy led them toward the lit structures in the distance…one chilling realization settled deep into Jasper's mind; Moving forward didn't just save them…it delivered them into someone else's world.
