Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Too Close to the Fire

Jayden saw her before she saw him.

Amara stood across the street near a small food spot, her back resting lightly against the wall as she scrolled through her phone. The sun hit just right, outlining her figure like she didn't belong in a place like this.

Too clean.

Too calm.

Too different.

Jayden slowed his steps.

For a second… he thought about turning back.

But his feet didn't listen.

"Amara."

She looked up.

And smiled.

That same smile that made everything else feel quiet.

"Jayden," she said, tilting her head slightly. "You disappear like that a lot?"

He forced a small smile.

"Depends."

"On what?"

"…On what's chasing me."

She laughed softly.

But when she looked at him again—

She noticed it.

Something was off.

"You good?" she asked.

Jayden nodded quickly.

"Yeah. Just tired."

A lie.

And she knew it.

Amara stepped closer, studying him.

"You don't look tired," she said quietly.

Jayden looked away.

"Then what I look like?"

She hesitated.

"…Like something happened."

Silence.

For a moment, he almost told her.

Almost.

But then—

He remembered the warning.

"That girl you was with… be careful."

Jayden stepped back slightly.

Creating space.

"I gotta handle some stuff," he said.

Amara frowned.

"You just got here."

"I know."

"Then why does it feel like you're already leaving?"

That hit.

Harder than anything else that day.

Jayden exhaled slowly.

"It's not like that."

"Then what is it?"

He didn't answer.

Because there was no way to explain this life without dragging her into it.

That's when it happened.

A car pulled up.

Slow.

Too slow.

Jayden noticed immediately.

His whole body tensed.

Amara followed his gaze.

"What is it?"

Jayden's voice dropped.

"Don't look at them."

Too late.

She already had.

Three guys inside.

Watching.

Not random.

Not normal.

Jayden stepped closer to Amara.

Not for comfort.

For protection.

"Listen to me," he said quietly. "You need to go."

"What? Why—"

"Now."

His tone changed.

Serious.

Urgent.

Amara's heartbeat picked up.

"What's going on?"

Jayden didn't answer.

Because the car door opened.

One of them stepped out.

Then another.

They didn't rush.

They didn't shout.

That made it worse.

"Yo," one called out.

Jayden didn't respond.

"Jayden."

Now he had to.

He turned slowly.

"I don't want no problems."

The guy laughed.

"That's funny."

A pause.

"Because problems want you."

Jayden stepped slightly in front of Amara.

Blocking her from their view.

"Go," he whispered again.

This time—

She listened.

But she didn't run far.

She stayed just enough to see.

And that changed everything.

"You think this over?" the guy asked.

Jayden stayed calm.

"It should be."

"It's not."

The second guy stepped closer.

"You embarrassed people."

Jayden clenched his jaw.

"That wasn't my intention."

"Don't matter."

Same words.

Different moment.

The street felt smaller now.

Like everything was closing in.

Jayden looked around quickly.

Too many eyes.

Too many risks.

He couldn't move reckless.

Not with Amara here.

The first guy leaned in slightly.

Lowering his voice.

"We could end this right now."

Jayden didn't flinch.

"But we not going to."

A pause.

"Yet."

The guy stepped back.

Pointing slightly at him.

"You got time."

"Use it."

Then his eyes shifted—

Past Jayden.

Toward Amara.

And that was the mistake.

Jayden's tone changed instantly.

"Don't."

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

The guy smirked.

"Or what?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Jayden forced himself to relax.

Not here.

Not now.

That's what they wanted.

He stepped back.

Hands open.

"I hear you," he said.

"Good."

They got back into the car.

Like nothing happened.

Like they didn't just shake everything.

And drove off.

Amara walked back slowly.

Her expression different now.

No smile.

No softness.

Just questions.

"Jayden…"

He didn't look at her.

"…What was that?"

He stayed quiet.

Because now—

There was no hiding it anymore.

When he finally looked at her…

His voice was low.

"That's the part of my life I was trying to keep you out of."
