Chapter 8 - THE PERFECT ILLUSION

By morning, everything looked… normal.

Too normal.

Lena stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the fabric of the elegant dress that had been laid out for her. It fit perfectly—of course it did. Everything in Aiden's world was precise, calculated, intentional.

Perfect.

And that was exactly what unsettled her.

Because nothing about her situation felt perfect.

Not the deal.

Not the tension.

Not the danger that now lingered in the back of her mind like a shadow she couldn't shake.

And definitely not the way her heart reacted every time Aiden was near.

A knock came at the door.

"Come in," she said.

The door opened, and one of the staff stepped in briefly.

"Mr. Cole is waiting for you downstairs."

Lena nodded. "I'll be there."

As the door closed again, she took one last look at herself in the mirror.

She barely recognized the woman staring back.

Elegant.

Composed.

Like she belonged in this world.

But it was just that—

An illusion.

When Lena stepped into the living area, Aiden was already there, dressed in a tailored suit that looked like it had been made specifically for him.

Effortless.

Powerful.

Dangerous.

His eyes lifted the moment he saw her.

And for a brief second—

He paused.

It was subtle.

Barely noticeable.

But Lena caught it.

"You're late," he said.

"I'm on time," she replied, walking toward him.

Aiden's gaze lingered on her for a moment longer before he nodded slightly.

"You'll stay close to me today."

Lena crossed her arms lightly. "Is that an order or part of your 'protection' plan?"

"Both."

She sighed. "Of course."

The event was exactly what Lena expected—and worse.

A high-profile charity gala filled with wealthy elites, influential figures, and people who looked like they had never experienced a single real problem in their lives.

The moment they walked in, all eyes turned to them.

Whispers followed.

Judgment.

Curiosity.

"Smile," Aiden murmured under his breath.

Lena forced one onto her face.

"Relax your shoulders," he added.

She resisted the urge to glare at him. "Stop micromanaging me."

"Then stop looking like you want to run."

"I do want to run."

"Not an option."

Aiden's hand rested lightly on her lower back, guiding her forward.

The contact sent an unexpected wave of awareness through her.

Warm.

Steady.

Dangerous.

"Stay focused," he said quietly.

"I am focused," she replied.

"On the wrong things."

Before she could respond, a group approached them.

Smiles.

Polite greetings.

Fake warmth.

"Aiden, it's good to see you," one man said.

"And this must be the fiancée we've all been hearing about."

Lena felt their eyes on her instantly.

Evaluating.

Measuring.

Aiden's grip on her tightened slightly.

"Lena," he said smoothly, "this is Mr. Harrington."

Lena nodded politely. "Nice to meet you."

"Likewise," the man replied, though his tone suggested otherwise.

The conversation continued, but Lena barely processed it.

Because something felt off.

It started as a small feeling.

A subtle awareness.

Like someone was watching her.

Not casually.

Not curiously.

But intentionally.

Her eyes shifted slightly, scanning the room.

And then—

She saw him.

A man standing near the edge of the crowd.

Not talking.

Not moving.

Just watching.

Her breath caught.

There was something about him.

Something wrong.

"Don't react," Aiden's voice came quietly beside her.

Lena froze.

"You see him too?" she whispered.

"Yes."

Her heart started pounding.

"Who is he?"

"I don't know yet," Aiden replied.

That didn't help.

At all.

"Is he—"

"Possibly."

Lena forced herself to look away, her pulse racing.

"Now what?" she asked.

"Now we continue," Aiden said.

"Continue?" she repeated. "Like nothing is happening?"

"Exactly."

This was insane.

But she did it anyway.

She smiled.

Nodded.

Played her role.

Because that's what this was, right?

A role.

An illusion.

But the more she played it—

The more real it started to feel.

Later in the evening, Aiden led her away from the crowd, toward a quieter part of the venue.

Lena exhaled the moment they were alone.

"This is too much," she said. "The people, the pressure—and now this?"

"He's still here," Aiden said.

Her stomach dropped. "You're serious?"

"Yes."

Lena ran a hand through her hair.

"I don't like this."

"You don't have to," he replied. "You just have to stay close."

She looked at him then.

Really looked at him.

"You're not even surprised," she said.

Aiden didn't answer.

"Does this happen often?" she pressed.

Another pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Lena let out a shaky breath.

"And you think I can just… adapt to this?"

"You will."

"That's not reassuring."

"It's reality."

Silence fell between them.

But it wasn't the same kind of silence.

This one was heavier.

More honest.

"Why me?" Lena asked suddenly.

Aiden's gaze shifted to hers.

"What do you mean?"

"Out of everyone," she said. "Why did you choose me?"

For a moment, it looked like he might avoid the question.

Like he always did.

But then—

"You were convenient," he said.

The words hit.

Hard.

Lena laughed softly, though it didn't reach her eyes.

"Right," she said. "Convenient."

She looked away quickly, but not before he saw it.

That brief flicker.

That small crack.

And for the first time—

Aiden hesitated.

"That's not the only reason," he added.

Lena stilled.

Slowly, she turned back to him.

"Then what is?"

A pause.

Long.

Tense.

"You're different," he said.

Her breath caught.

"Different how?" she asked quietly.

Aiden stepped closer.

Too close.

"You don't try to impress me," he said. "You don't pretend to understand my world. You challenge it."

The air shifted again.

That same dangerous tension.

"And you don't like that?" Lena asked.

Aiden's gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes.

"I didn't say that."

Her heart skipped.

For a moment—

Everything else faded.

The danger.

The crowd.

The illusion.

It was just them.

Then—

A voice interrupted.

"Aiden."

They both turned.

Vanessa.

Of course.

Her eyes moved between them, sharp and knowing.

"I see you're still playing pretend," she said.

Lena straightened slightly.

"And I see you're still interrupting," she replied calmly.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Oh, this isn't an interruption," she said. "This is a warning."

Aiden's expression hardened.

"Leave, Vanessa."

But she didn't move.

Instead, her gaze locked onto Lena.

"He's lying to you," she said softly.

Lena's chest tightened.

"About what?"

Vanessa's smile deepened.

"Everything."

And just like that—

The illusion cracked.

Because suddenly—

Nothing felt perfect anymore.

Not the relationship.

Not the protection.

Not even Aiden.

It was all—

A carefully constructed illusion.

And Lena was right in the middle of it.
