The camp woke to tension the next morning. Garrett's scouts had confirmed what Ted's **Horde Sense** had already detected, a sizable pack of infected, at least sixty strong, moving slowly but steadily toward their location. Two intelligent variants were leading, coordinating the shamblers with guttural commands. It wasn't a full siege yet, but it was close enough to put everyone on edge.
Garrett gathered the camp after breakfast rations. "We've got a pack heading our way. Not massive, but organized. We can't outrun it with the supplies we have, so we fortify and hit them hard when they reach the outer barricades. Everyone with a gun on the roofs. Melee fighters on the ground. Ted, you're with the ground team. Show us what you can do."
Riley gave Ted a quick, meaningful look as the group dispersed. "Stay controlled," she murmured. "Don't let them see too much."
Ted nodded. He understood. One slip with **Horde Command** in front of the entire camp could destroy the fragile trust he had built.
The pack arrived shortly after midday. The first wave slammed into the outer barricades, shamblers clawing at the reinforced vehicles and scrap metal. Gunfire erupted from the rooftops, dropping dozens in the opening minutes. Ted stood on the ground level with five other melee fighters, crowbar ready.
When a section of barricade buckled under the weight of fifteen infected, Ted charged in with the others. He swung hard, crushing skulls with controlled but visible strength. Between strikes, he absorbed essence discreetly whenever possible.

The intelligent variants hung back, directing the lesser zombies forward in waves. One of them pointed directly toward Ted's position, as if sensing something unusual.
Ted saw his opportunity during a lull. While the main force was focused on the barricade breach, he targeted a group of six lesser zombies breaking toward the flank. He activated **Basic Horde Command** with a careful, low-Essence pulse (35 Essence):
*Redirect. Turn and attack the nearest intelligent variant from behind.*
Four of the six zombies lurched awkwardly and changed direction, slamming clumsily into one of the intelligent leaders. The variant roared in confusion as its own forces turned on it. Riley, from the roof, took the opening and dropped the variant with a precise rifle shot.
The second intelligent variant tried to regain control, but the momentary chaos allowed the camp defenders to push the horde back. The pack eventually broke and scattered, leaving dozens of corpses outside the barricades.
Cheers rose from the rooftops. Garrett clapped Ted on the back as the ground team regrouped. "You fight like hell, kid. That flank move saved us time. You're earning your keep."
Riley descended from the roof and gave Ted a subtle nod of approval mixed with caution. She had seen the redirected zombies, she knew what he had done.
Later that evening, as the camp celebrated the successful defense with extra rations, Riley pulled Ted aside near the outer tents.
"You're getting bolder," she said quietly. "I saw those zombies turn again. You're doing something to them. If Garrett or the others figure it out…"
"I'm only using it to protect the camp," Ted replied. "It's the same power that's kept me alive this long. I won't turn it against anyone here."
Riley studied him for a long moment. "I believe you. For now. But secrets like this have a way of coming out. And when they do, this camp might not be big enough for both you and the fear you bring."
Before Ted could respond, a shout came from the watchtower.
"Lights on the horizon! Multiple vehicles, military style! They're searching the streets. Looks like they're heading this way!"
Garrett's voice boomed across the camp. "Everyone to positions! We might have company, and it's not the dead this time."
Ted's stomach tightened. The hub had found his trail.
**********
The camp's watchtower alarm cut through the evening like a knife. Lights, bright, organized vehicle headlights swept the ruined streets several blocks away. They moved with military precision, stopping occasionally to scan alleys and buildings.
Garrett barked orders. "Everyone to defensive positions! No lights, no noise. If they're from that big hub, they're not here for tea. Barricades stay closed unless I say otherwise."
Ted climbed to the rooftop with Riley and two other shooters. His heart beat steady, but the situation was dangerous on multiple levels. If the search team spotted him and demanded his return, the camp might hand him over to avoid trouble. If he used his powers openly to defend the camp, his secret would explode.
**Horde Sense** confirmed what his eyes already saw: no major infected threat nearby, but the human convoy was closing in, three armored vehicles and at least a dozen armed personnel.
Riley crouched beside him, rifle ready. "You think they're looking for you?"
"Almost certainly," Ted replied quietly. "One of them has a personal grudge. If they find me here, things could get ugly fast."
The convoy stopped two blocks away. Spotlights swept the camp's barricades. A amplified voice boomed across the ruins.
"Attention, survivor camp! This is a United Global Defense Initiative authorized search team from Central Military Hub. We are looking for a dangerous anomalous individual named Ted Harlan. He escaped custody and is considered a high-risk vector for Necro-Virus mutation. If you are harboring him, surrender him immediately for everyone's safety. Cooperation will be rewarded. Resistance will be met with force."
Garrett stood up on the barricade, megaphone in hand. "We don't know any Ted Harlan. We're a small independent camp trying to survive. Move on, we have no quarrel with the hub."
A familiar voice crackled back,Marcus, loud and venomous. "Bullshit! We know he's been seen in this sector. Hand him over or we'll tear your little fort apart looking for him. You don't want a war with the hub."
Tension thickened. Camp members gripped their weapons tighter. Some glanced nervously toward Ted's position on the roof.
Riley whispered, "What do you want to do? If we give you up, they might leave us alone. But I don't trust them."
Ted's mind raced. Revealing himself could protect the camp in the short term, but it would destroy any future here and likely end with him back in containment or worse. Fighting the search team openly would paint the camp as enemies of the hub.
He made his choice.
"I'll handle this," Ted said softly. He stood up slowly, making himself visible on the rooftop. "Marcus! It's me. Ted Harlan. These people don't know anything about me. Let them go. I'll come with you."
Marcus's spotlight swung up and locked onto him. Even from this distance, Ted could see the triumphant sneer on his face.
"Well, well. The freak finally shows himself. Come down slowly, hands up. Any tricks and we open fire on the whole camp."
Ted began climbing down the ladder, mind working fast. He activated **Minor Flesh Crafting** at low power to keep his appearance normal and unthreatening. As he reached the ground, he sent a very subtle **Basic Horde Command** pulse toward a small group of lesser zombies two blocks away, nothing strong, just enough to create distant noise and movement to distract the search team.
The zombies responded weakly, moaning louder and shuffling noisily. Several hub soldiers turned their weapons toward the sound.
In that moment of distraction, Ted moved.
He sprinted not toward the convoy, but sideways along the barricade, using his enhanced agility to vault over a low section of scrap metal and disappear into the narrow alley behind the camp.
Gunfire erupted behind him — Marcus screaming orders. "He's running! After him! Don't let the freak escape again!"
Riley's voice rang out from the roof, covering for him. "He went that way! Toward the old subway entrance!"
Ted ran hard through the dark alleys, **Horde Sense** guiding him away from the main search team while drawing lesser infected into his wake to create confusion. He used **Basic Horde Command** twice more, small, cheap pulses to make zombies stumble into the path of pursuing soldiers.
The camp faded behind him. He had bought the survivors time and avoided forcing them to choose sides.
But now he was alone again in the ruins, hunted, with Marcus and a full search team on his trail.
Ted ducked into a collapsed parking garage, breathing hard but energized by the escape. The System chimed:
*[Emergency Quest: Evade Hub Pursuit – Progress: Successful initial escape. +80 Necro Essence. New objective: Lose pursuers or turn the hunt against them.]*
**Necro Essence: 1,003**
Ted allowed himself a grim smile in the darkness.
