Chapter 1 - ONE: THE INTERVIEW

Hailey had an interview today.

Her heart pounded as she hurried down the busy street, clutching her folder tightly against her chest. This was not just any interview—it was her chance. The opportunity that could change everything for her and her struggling family.

She couldn't afford to mess it up.

As she approached a crowded intersection, she noticed an old woman standing at the edge of the road. Cars rushed past endlessly, horns blaring, drivers impatient. The woman looked frail, unsure, and a little afraid.

Hailey hesitated.

She checked the time.

She was already cutting it close.

But something in her wouldn't let her walk away.

"Ma'am," she said gently, stepping beside the woman, "do you need help crossing?"

The old woman looked at her with soft, knowing eyes. "Yes, dear. My legs aren't what they used to be."

Without another thought, Hailey took her hand and carefully guided her across the road, shielding her from the rushing traffic. It took longer than she expected, and by the time they reached the other side, Hailey's nerves were even worse.

"Thank you, child," the old woman said, smiling warmly. "You're in a hurry, aren't you?"

"Yes…" Hailey admitted. "I have an interview. It's really important."

The old woman tilted her head. "And what do you wish for?"

Hailey laughed nervously. "Honestly? I wish I could read my boss's thoughts. So I don't say the wrong thing and ruin everything."

The old woman's smile deepened.

"Be careful what you wish for."

Before Hailey could respond, the woman squeezed her hand—just once—and something strange passed between them. A faint warmth. A spark.

Hailey blinked.

And the old woman was already walking away.

Hailey shook it off and rushed toward the towering glass building ahead.

She had no idea…

Her wish had just come true

The building was intimidating.

Tall. Sleek. Powerful.

The kind of place where people either made their lives—or lost their confidence trying.

Hailey stepped inside, trying to steady her breathing.

You can do this. Just be calm. Just be smart. Just don't mess up.

"Name?" the receptionist asked.

"Hailey Grant. I have an interview for the executive assistant position."

The receptionist nodded. "Top floor. You'll be meeting the CEO directly."

Hailey froze.

"The… CEO?"

"Yes."

Her stomach dropped.

Why is the CEO interviewing me directly?!

This was supposed to be a normal job interview, not a life-or-death judgment from the most powerful person in the company.

But there was no turning back now.

The elevator ride felt like it lasted forever.

Ding.

The doors opened.

And Hailey stepped into silence.

The top floor was quiet. Too quiet. Everything looked expensive—polished floors, glass walls, minimal design. It screamed power and control.

"Miss Grant?"

Hailey turned.

A tall man stood at the far end of the hall.

Sharp suit. Cold expression. Eyes that looked like they could see through lies before they were even spoken.

"Follow me," he said.

No smile.

No warmth.

Nothing.

Great. I'm doomed.

She sat across from him in his office.

It was massive. Clean. Perfectly organized.

Just like him.

"I'm Adrian Cole," he said. "CEO."

"I—I know," Hailey stammered.

Of course I know. Everyone knows. Why did I say that?!

He raised an eyebrow.

And then—

Something strange happened.

A voice.

Not out loud.

But in her head.

She's nervous. Unprepared. This is already a waste of time.

Hailey froze.

Her eyes widened slightly.

…Did he just…?

She looked at him.

His lips hadn't moved.

He was just staring at her.

But the voice had been clear.

Another candidate trying too hard. She won't last five minutes under pressure.

Hailey's heart started racing.

I can hear him.

She swallowed hard.

I CAN HEAR HIM.

Tell me about yourself," Adrian said calmly.

Hailey's mind was spinning.

Okay. Okay. Don't panic. Maybe it's just stress. Maybe I'm imagining things.

But then—

If she gives me a generic answer, I'm ending this immediately.

Her eyes widened again.

Nope. Not imagining.

"Um…" she started.

Think. THINK.

If she could hear his thoughts…

That meant she knew exactly what he didn't want.

"I don't have an impressive background," she said carefully. "No fancy schools. No powerful connections."

He leaned back slightly.

Honest? That's unexpected.

Hailey continued, gaining a bit of confidence.

"But I learn fast. I pay attention. And I don't quit when things get difficult—even when I want to."

Silence.

He studied her.

Not bad… but words are easy.

Hailey clenched her folder slightly.

Okay… so he needs proof.

"I know words aren't enough," she added quickly. "Give me a task. Anything. Let me prove it."

He paused.

For a moment, there was no voice.

Then—

Interesting.

Fine," Adrian said.

He slid a file across the desk.

"This is a failing project. Deadlines missed. Budget exceeded. Clients unhappy."

Hailey opened it quickly.

"Fix it," he said.

Her eyes widened.

"Now?"

"Yes."

Let's see how long she lasts under pressure.

Hailey took a deep breath.

This was insane.

But she had an advantage.

As she scanned the file, she listened.

She's overwhelmed.

She won't find the core issue.

No one ever does.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Core issue…

She flipped through the pages faster.

Looking.

Thinking.

Listening.

Then—

The communication breakdown between departments… that's where everything started.

Hailey froze.

Got it.

She looked up.

"The problem isn't the budget or the timeline," she said.

Adrian didn't react.

But—

Go on…

"It's communication," she continued. "The departments aren't aligned. They're working separately instead of together. That's why everything is falling apart."

Silence.

Then—

…She found it.

Adrian leaned forward slowly.

"And your solution?"

Hailey didn't hesitate.

"Restructure communication. Weekly cross-department meetings. Clear task ownership. And a single point of accountability."

She slid the file back.

"Fix that—and everything else will follow."

Adrian stared at her.

For a long moment, there were no thoughts.

No voice.

Nothing.

Then—

She's right.

Hailey almost smiled.

Almost.

But she kept her face calm.

Professional.

"I see," he said quietly.

He stood up.

Walked to the window.

Then turned back to her.

"You're hired."
