Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Ji-eun had always lived an ordinary life.

The kind of life where nothing unexpected ever happened. Her days followed a predictable rhythm—late mornings, rushed classes, quiet evenings, and long nights filled with her own thoughts. It was simple, peaceful… and, at times, a little boring.

But she never complained.

Because ordinary meant safe.

And safe was enough.

Until one April afternoon changed everything.

The hostel corridor was unusually quiet when Ji-eun returned from college. A soft golden light streamed in through the tall windows, stretching across the floor like painted lines. She walked lazily, her bag slipping off one shoulder, already thinking about collapsing onto her bed.

Just as she reached her door, a voice stopped her.

"Ji-eun."

She turned, startled.

Her warden stood a few steps behind her, her expression unreadable.

"Yes, ma'am?" Ji-eun asked, straightening slightly.

"There's been a change in your room arrangement."

Ji-eun frowned. "Change?"

"You'll be sharing your room from today."

For a moment, Ji-eun simply stared at her, unsure if she had heard correctly.

"…Sharing?"

"Yes."

"But I've been alone all this time—"

"It's final."

The firmness in her voice left no room for argument.

Ji-eun sighed softly, already annoyed. "Fine… who is it?"

The warden paused for a brief second before replying,

"His name is Min-jae."

Ji-eun blinked.

"…His?"

Before she could process it fully, the door was opened.

And there he was.

Standing quietly near the window, as if he had always belonged there.

The soft sunlight framed his figure, casting a faint glow along his shoulders. He looked calm—too calm. His posture was straight, his expression composed, and yet there was something distant about him… something that made Ji-eun feel like she was looking at someone she didn't quite understand.

His eyes shifted toward her.

"Hi," he said simply.

Ji-eun forgot how to speak for a second.

"Oh… uh—hi," she managed, awkwardly brushing her hair behind her ear. "I'm Ji-eun."

"I know."

That was all he said.

And somehow, that made it even more unsettling.

The evening passed in an unusual silence.

Min-jae spoke very little, and when he did, his words were short and precise. He arranged his belongings neatly, almost mechanically, while Ji-eun sat on her bed pretending to scroll through her phone—though her attention never really left him.

There was something strange about him.

Not rude. Not unfriendly.

Just… controlled.

As if every movement, every word, was carefully measured.

Ji-eun couldn't take it anymore.

"So…" she began, breaking the silence. "Where are you from?"

"Seoul."

"…That's it?"

He glanced at her briefly. "Yes."

Ji-eun frowned slightly. "You're not very talkative, are you?"

"I talk when it's necessary."

She stared at him.

"…Wow. Living with you is going to be very fun."

For the first time, a faint hint of a smile appeared on his face.

"Give it time," he said.

Ji-eun wasn't sure if that was supposed to be comforting.

Over the next few days, Ji-eun noticed things.

Small things at first.

Min-jae rarely used his phone in front of her. He never mentioned his classes. And most strangely—

He left the room every night at exactly midnight.

Not a minute early. Not a minute late.

Exactly twelve.

At first, Ji-eun tried to ignore it.

But curiosity had always been her weakness.

One night, she finally decided to find out the truth.

She pretended to be asleep, her back turned toward him, her breathing slow and steady.

The room was silent.

Then—

A soft click.

Ji-eun's eyes opened slightly.

Min-jae was leaving.

Her heart began to race.

Carefully, she got up and followed him.

The corridor felt colder at night, emptier. Her footsteps were soft, cautious, as she kept a safe distance behind him.

He moved confidently, without hesitation, heading toward the back exit.

Ji-eun frowned.

Where does he go every night…?

Lost in thought, she didn't notice how close she had gotten.

Until—

"Ow!"

She winced softly, bumping her foot against the wall.

Min-jae stopped.

Ji-eun froze.

Her heart dropped.

Slowly… he turned.

"If you're going to follow me," he said calmly, "at least try to be quiet."

Ji-eun's eyes widened.

"You knew?!"

He didn't answer. Instead, he began walking toward her.

Each step steady. Measured.

Dangerously calm.

Ji-eun instinctively stepped back.

"I—I was just—"

"Curious?" he finished for her.

She swallowed.

"…Yes."

For a brief moment, silence hung between them.

Then Ji-eun's eyes shifted—

To the bag slung over his shoulder.

It was slightly open.

And inside—

Something metallic.

Something that definitely didn't belong to a normal student.

Her breath caught.

Min-jae noticed.

And for the first time—

His expression changed.

A faint, knowing smile appeared on his lips.

"You weren't supposed to see that," he said quietly.

Ji-eun took another step back, her voice trembling slightly.

"Min-jae… what is that?"

Ji-eun stared at him, her thoughts spinning out of control.

The calm boy she had been sharing a room with…

The quiet, polite roommate who barely spoke…

He wasn't normal.

Not even close.

Min-jae stepped closer, closing the distance between them.

Too close.

Ji-eun could feel her heartbeat rising—not just from fear this time, but something else… something unfamiliar.

"Ji-eun," he said softly, his voice low and steady, "some things are better left unknown."

Her breath caught.

"Then why…" she whispered, her voice barely audible, "…do I feel like I should know everything about you?"

For a moment, his expression changed.

Not cold. Not distant.

Something softer.

Something real.

He raised his hand slowly—

And for a second, Ji-eun thought he was going to push her away.

But instead…

His fingers gently brushed against her wrist, pulling her slightly closer.

"Curiosity can be dangerous," he murmured.

Ji-eun's heart skipped.

"Maybe…" she said, her eyes locked with his, "…I don't mind the danger."

Silence.

The air between them felt heavier now.

Closer.

Warmer.

Then—

As he turned slightly—

His bag shifted.

The zipper slid open just a little.

Ji-eun's eyes dropped instinctively.

And that's when she saw it.

Something cold.

Something metallic.

Hidden inside—

A gun.

Her breath hitched.

The warmth vanished instantly.

Slowly… she looked back up at him.

Her heart still racing—

But now for a completely different reason.

"Min-jae…" she whispered.

This time—

There was fear in her eyes.

And yet…

Somewhere deep inside—

That strange feeling hadn't disappeared.
