Chapter 2 - chapter 2: A Stranger in the Rain

The rain showed no mercy.

It poured heavily, soaking Serena's clothes, her hair sticking to her face, her shoes filling with water as she walked without direction. The cold didn't bother her.

Nothing could feel colder than what she had just experienced.

People rushed past her with umbrellas, protecting themselves from the storm.

No one noticed the girl whose heart had just been broken.

No one except one man.

Inside a black luxury car parked across the street, Adrian Kingston watched quietly through the tinted window.

His sharp eyes had noticed her almost immediately.

Not because she was loud.

But because she wasn't.

Most people cried loudly after heartbreak.

Most people called friends.

Most people looked desperate.

But this woman simply walked in the rain like she was carrying the weight of something much heavier than tears.

His driver spoke carefully:

"Sir,the meeting starts in twenty minutes."

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained on Serena.

Observing.

Calculating.

Curious.

"Change of plans," he said calmly

The driver blinked slightly.

"Sir?"

"Cancel it."

That meeting involved millions.

He canceled it without hesitation.

Adrian stepped out of the car.

The rain immediately touched his perfectly tailored suit, but he didn't seem to notice.

He walked toward her.

Serena didn't realize someone was approaching until a shadow stopped in front of her.

She looked up slowly.

And froze.

He was… striking.

Tall.

Sharp features.

Cold dark eyes that looked like they could read people completely.

Not just handsome.

Dangerous.

The kind of man who didn't belong in ordinary situations.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Adrian removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders.

Serena immediately tried to remove it.

"I don't need"

His voice stopped her.

Calm.

Deep.

Controlled.

"You'll get sick,"

She hesitated.

"Why would you care?"

His answer came without emotion.

"I don't,"

That surprised her.

Then he added:

"I just don't like watching unnecessary suffering."

Serena almost laughed.

"That's a strange way to show indifference."

A very faint expression touched his lips.

Not quite a smile.

"That's strangely calm for someone who was just betrayed."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"You saw?"

"Enough."

Serena looked away.

Embarrassment mixed with pain.

"Then you saw something pathetic."

His answer came instantly.

"No."

She looked back at him.

Silence.

That wasn't what she expected.

"Most people stay," he continued. They beg. They negotiate their dignity."

His gaze held hers.

"You didn't."

Something about his words felt… sincere.

Serena exhaled slowly.

"It still hurts."

Adrian nodded slightly.

"Pain means you were sincere."

She studied him now.

His answer was simple.

"I don't."

"Why?"

"Because everything has a price."

She shook her head.

"That's a sad way to live."

"It's an efficient way to live."

For some reason… she smiled slightly.

"You must be very lonely."

That was the first thing anyone had said to him in years that caught him off guard.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You don't know me."

Serena nodded.

"Exactly."

A strange quiet formed between them.

The rain softened slightly.

Adrian spoke again:

"Drink with me."

Serena blinked.

"No."

"Then why me?"

His answer was honest.

"Because you look like someone standing at a turning point."

She considered this.

Maybe she needed to forget tonight.

Maybe she needed to feel like someone else for just a few hours.

"Just one drink,"she said.

"Just one," he agreed.

One drink became conversation.

Conversation became honesty.

Honesty became something neither planned.

Hours later…

In a luxury hotel suite…

Serena stood near the window, nervous suddenly.

"I don't even know your name."

He looked at her.

For a moment he considered telling her.

Then chose not to.

"Dose it matter?"

She thought about it.

Then shook her head.

"No."

"Good."

There was tension now.

Not forced.

Not rushed.

Just two wounded people standing too close.

"Tonight,"Adrian said quietly, "we can just be strangers."

Serena's heart beat faster.

"Tomorrow we go back to our lives."

No promises.

No lies.

No expectations.

For someone whose trust had just been destroyed…

That honesty felt safer than romance.

She nodded slowly.

""Ok,"

That was how it started.

Not with love.

Not with desire.

But with escape.

And by morning…

Everything would change.
